"I have shed tears more than once in the last week because I have felt *heard* " I felt that in my soul. As a half black kid reaching his 30s who grew up in a predominantly white area, it's hard to put in words how validating it feels to just be heard. I've also cried several times because it's just like...again, hard to put in words. Just the fact that people are willing to listen has been life changing. For once I don't feel like I'm "outside of", I'm fully a part of everything. The acknowledgement of "We recognize that things are different for you than they are for us" is wild. It is beautiful, and it is heartbreaking.

I find it interesting that Khary brings up something that not many others have brought up. The fact that the system failed that officer because if someone had stepped in after the earlier complaints he wouldn't have gone as far as he did. It shows an amazing amount of grace than what I feel I would've been able to muster.

It really shows his greatness. And he is totally right about it. We all need social correctives and if we act up, the good guys need to step in and put us in our place, make us reflect on our behaviour and give us a chance to be better. At least that: a chance.

@suckyskiz4502
@suckyskiz4502 4 года назад
Absolutely. This idea that there are a few "bad apples" is an easy explanation that prevents us from looking at the system. It dehumanizes George Floyd and other people of color by viewing them as threats, but it also dehumanized this officer destroying his humanity to the point where he could ignore the plea of a dying man.
@chalor182
@chalor182 4 года назад
The police culture and training process deliberately dehumanizes them. It is not a mistake. They foster a mindset that they are *against* the public, and also that anyone who tries to speak out against the culture of violence and lying is a rat and is peered out. It is a deliberate process. They know exactly what they are doing. They didn't "fail" that officer he is exactly who they are trying to create.
@olesams
@olesams 4 года назад
@@chalor182 Well, that is simply not true. :) And honestly to advocate such ideas is not helping anyone. Now, there are plenty of reprehensible episodes with police out there. But Just take a look at Donutoperators channel, there are so many moments of cops being both friendly, civil and taking just straight up SHIT from bystanders or people involved with traffic stops. And on occasion, cops helping out or simply ignoring minor violations, if you are civil with them. But you never see them in the news, or on the social medias. Even cops pleading, and i quote "i do not want to kill you, man". Which i find the most heartwrenching of all. Regardless of race, if your mental state is so deteriorated that you decide to swing a weapon or put policeofficers in a life threatening situation so they are forced to fend for their own lives, that statement makes it pretty clear that it is not a issue of indoctrination. Other than that, i have no interest in commenting on the situation. But saying "cops are trained/indoctrinated to hate civilians" is just.. False. And a dangerous attitude to have.

The black conservative voice is a part of the conversation, sure. But uh, if 20 people get stung by a mutant wasp, and 19 say it was the worst pain they ever felt and 1 said it was a super amazing high, would you assume the 19 were lying or would you assume the 1 had an anomalous experience. Black conservatives experiences are valid insofar as they are black people with world views and experiences, and sometimes they do have meaningful things to contribute to the conversation, but they have an anomalous world view. They are a tiny percentage on the Black experience.
@gyishin

After my brother came back from Iraq, he joined a police force, like a lot of vets. Not many transferrable skills for a Ranger. Problem is, a lot of those vets spent a couple of years in a country where everyone, man, woman, and child; could be the enemy. That feeling doesn't shake. Most police forces don't perform psychological evaluations as a part of hiring. He told me point blank, "If they did a psych evaluation, I wouldn't have got this job." That's not the only problem going on, but it's certainly a big part of the problem.

This is why in most first world countries police training is longer than just a few weeks. It *is* an incredibly stressful, demanding and difficult job. But that's not an excuse to get a lot of things wrong. Imagine if ATC or paramedics took that approach: "Well, my training was only X weeks, so how do you expect me to always remember all those meds?" No, you train people to *properly* do the job you ask them to do...
@cadaverillavigne5371
@cadaverillavigne5371 4 года назад
I mean the problem is that Derek Chauvin, who murdered George Flloyd, had actually already killed someone while on duty. In 2006 he shot and killed Wayne Reyes. In 2008, he shot Ira Lotrell Toles in the chest at point blank. He shot Leroy Martinez in 2011. And in each of those cases there were at least 4 other officers standing there. Disciplining these officers might help, but it hasn't in the past. Officers are legally protected from prosecution, and usually they will protect their own, no matter how illegal that might be. Bob Kroll, the president of the Minneapolis Police Union, is pretty openly racist, and has always defended killer cops in his city. So the problem doesn't really reside in persuading cops to just be better, but in removing from power and radically changing the police.
@cadaverillavigne5371
@cadaverillavigne5371 4 года назад
@Kustard Kippers Why do police need hundreds of millions of dollars? What are they spending it on that is benefiting the community? How come schools, libraries, and hospitals get threadbare budgets, forcing the people who work there to buy their own supplies out of pocket, but every year police get increasing and increasing budgets? They buy tanks, assault weapons, and tear gas, why do we need those on our streets? Wouldn't that money better be spent on things like after school programs or a community free clinic? I think you have a misguided impression of what the police do. The police officer who murdered Rayshard Brooks had just completed deescalation and stress management classes but still killed someone. So it seems like we aren't approaching our society's problems in a good way, and we need to rethink. Police have killed over 1000 people in 2019 alone. Six months, over one thousand human beings that died in interactions with police. Obviously this isn't working. We need to do something different. Something new.

As a person from Central Europe it is hard to relate to what is going on in the US. But hearing Khary explain it from his point of view put some things into perspecitve. You see rioters on the news because that is the focus but you don't see all the peaceful people that just want to live their lives without worrying about the police being hostile by default and misreading a situation (to the point of escalation)

I was filled with delight when they said “we are very PRO BLM, if you’re not-go watch something else”. Strictly IMO, they have a tendency to coddle the haters among us, and occasionally be overly apologetic if they offend with their stance on a topic. I understand why they feel the need to do that, but I’m glad they went ahead and shut down the nonsense before it started. Was so happy to see Khary, he had a great perspective on our current issues.

@Alexrider02 4 года назад
I appreciate the concept of BLM, as police brutality is an issue that needs to be addressed, but I am concerned at the amount of antisemitism that seems to be festering within the movement. Zansi as a proud Jewish woman, black lives matter. there is very concerning antisemitism, but conditional allyship does nothing to fix it. There has been a lot of mutual aid between our communities within the US, and also a lot of conflict, but the true enemy is white supremacy and inequality. Call out antisemitism when you see it, call out racism when you see it, and just focus on improving your community around you, because waiting for the perfect, unproblematic coalition just lets the real problem grow

As a practicing and devout Catholic, I totally support Khary’s comparison of the police to the Catholic priesthood. We had/have evil men in positions of authority amongst many good men, and it is essential that we have a high level of transparency in both the police force and the priesthood. We can and should support the good people in authority, but they must also be held to a higher standard. We can stand behind the police while also demanding better.

Before you comment something like. "keep politics out of the show" or "All lives Matter" or "go back to playing Dnd" just remember that you have the PRIVLEDGE to be able to tune out what is happening. They're doing a good thing by giving Khary a platform to voice the issues he and so many other black people deal with on a day to day basis. This is a time to listen and learn. And you can't pretend like this is the first time you're hearing about this type of thing on this channel, the Cast of CR is outspoken about their support for Black Lives matter and the LGBT+/Trans community on social media and in game. What, did you think that Yasha was Zuala's roommate? Or that Beau wanted to have a sleepover with Keg/Reani/etc.? Did you think that the Mighty Nein telling people not to use the word "crick" was some sort of bit? Did you forget when Essek said the phrase "white Xhorhassian" was "mildly racist"? "But CR says this is a place for all opinions" I hear you say? Yes, because the Critical Role team is SUPER accepting of bullies and people who backseat game!!!! NOT. Sure, you can watch Critical Role and do your best to pretend like your bigoted ideologies DONT fundamentally clash with the cast members who work so hard on the show that THEY MADE. Just know that the fanbase will not accept Racism, Sexism, Transphobia, Homophobia, ableism, etc. Because those are not "political opinions" Those are the opinions of Bullies. And if you really can't stand this because CR is your escape or safe space, just click off the video? Khary is awesome. His story about how cops see him as a threat at a glance till he can deescalate things really hit me. As a white guy the closest ive experienced to that was getting hassled by cops in my early 20's cus i looked like a scummy hippy (i kinda was tbh), but thats not even the same. I cleaned up my look and it all stopped. But black people can't do that its their SKIN. Why are they even seen as threats automatically? It all just makes me so mad.
@icymoons
@icymoons 4 года назад
i remember reading somewhere that police are trained to see people as threats, and they have to react preemptively before anything happens -- before the threat starts to manifest. you were "a scummy hippy" as you said, and they saw that as a threat. that itself is a problem. they shouldn't be trained like that. they should be trained to see everyone as someone to protect. police are warriors, when they should be guardians.
@icymoons
@icymoons 4 года назад
@Nick Smith Law enforcement is a service, should ideally be done for the good of the people and society. Their lives, as soon as they step into that uniform, are no longer selfishly theirs. "Serve and Protect", you know? Being taught to act on impulse and draw guns on civilians who could possibly be innocent (such as the original commenter, whose point you so horribly missed in your reply) is not an embodiment of the police's promise to _serve and protect._ People *can* be threats, I agree with you there. But the problem comes when you start believing _everyone_ is a threat, and you are part of system that allows you to commit murder with impunity.

Hey, greetings from the Conservative side of the political divide. I know there's a lot of tension and anger between political groups right now, lots of blame and hatred and it makes me sad. I wanted to express how much I appreciate this episode. Khary's message is so clear, so true, and philosophical on how we've gotten here, especially when he points out that it is human nature to not want to believe that there's an issue until forced to. I can't speak for all Conservatives, but I think my experience is shared by many. I was angered when I saw Mr. Floyd murdered, and aghast when I found out that his murderer had decades of abuse behind him. I was 100% behind the protests, they were completely justified to speak out against a system where 4 cops could kill somebody in broad daylight and not feel worried. I was angered when the protests were violently attacked, and angered once again when I saw rioters (Many from out of town) burning down the livelihoods of people who just wanted a fair shake. I've also felt helpless, because so much of what is happening is in cities where I have no voice. I've felt worried about joining local protests, because they have turned violent. I know that sound like making excuses, and maybe I am. I think, across the country and across all political lies, it has become glaringly obvious that there is a problem with police, and especially how they treat racial minorities. (As an aside, I can't believe how Khary was being treated, that's so fucked up). I think most of our difference now is what the source of the problem is, and how to solve it. Defund, abolish, reform, replace? Pros and cons to all of them, and I think they often carry knock on effects that are masked by a sense of urgency. I don't know, everybody seems to be talking at others instead of talking to them. I'm rambling now...Thank you Khary, for your wisdom and insight.
@taylesia1
@taylesia1 4 года назад
There are a lot of suggestions and solutions being proposed right now and what's so great about how things are set up is these changes will get to be made on a city by city and county by county case. I firmly believe there is not one solution that will fit all. Every county has different needs and defunding may work for one county over there, but reformed training and education for officers may be the solution in this city over here. Whatever happens, we do need change. Whatever that ends up looking like.

Man, after 2 years, Khary's message still feels moving to me. I have always perceived myself as all lives matter. I have friends from many races, genders, sexual orientation, nationality and religious preference, and they all deserve the right to be treated as human. I'm a white man and I know I have been blessed in my life. Call me blind of my privilege but I see it as everyone should have the same privileges in life. The same needs met, the same opportunities to have. Khary is a wonderful human, not because he's black, not because he's a man, but because he's a great person....and his message still rings loud and clear even today.

My dad is a police officer and he’s told me that the biggest problem in the police force is that there’s an unspoken rule where officers have to support each other no matter what. If they don’t, they can get treated like crap by the other officers even if they were trying to help innocent civilians from a crappy officer. Most of his friends are cops and they’re all great people and they all hate that unspoken rule. From my experience, this problem is completely social and a mentality, not necessarily systemic as many claim. I’ve gone on ride alongs with my dad and he has always come out with all people in his calls liking and respecting him even if he ended up arresting them. He had a ton of homeless/poor people in the city of all races he treated as friends. He always told me to respect everyone no matter what and they will respect you back. This is coming from a right leaning family that absolutely supports equality for all. And believe it or not, most right leaning people feel this way too. We are just outvoiced by the minority extremists. NEVER FORGET TO LOVE EACH OTHER NO MATTER WHAT

They are necesarry, more people should be in unions, so as to not be shat upon by their employers. It still boggles my mind whenever I hear someone talk about racism. I mean, are people so shallow that they can't see past one's color or race? I grew in a family where respect is not based on your looks, but rather on who you are, and what you've accomplished, and it confuses me why these kinds of things happen around the world. I just want to say how impressed I am by Khary pointing out that the police culture in Minneapolis not only stole the life of George Floyd, but also that of Derek Chauvin, the officer who killed him. The fact that a black man who has experienced the racism of law enforcement is still able to empathize to some degree with police at all, let alone the worst of them, is truly amazing. Let me be clear: this is not me in any way saying that the officer who murdered Floyd, the officers who stood by and let it happen, and the officers who have done these kinds of things over and over and continue to do so should not be punished. I'm not saying "All lives matter" or some vile, deflectionary bullshit like that. I just think that if more people had the thoughtfulness and self-restraint that Khary shows here, the world would be a much better place. On a lighter note, I'd really like to see my made-up word "deflectionary" take off, especially with the way political discussions seem to go these days.

Thank you. Just thank you so much. Everyone who was a part of filming and producing this and especially to Khary for giving his voice and his experiences to this. I have been doing my best to take this time to go on a cultural and educational journey while so many resources have been circulating. For context: I’m a white 24 yo female and studied Psych in college. I thought I was an open minded individual but every day I find something new to learn about and a bias to tear down and rebuild. I understand we work from heuristics but there are so many that are far more damaging than they are helpful. We need to take time to delve deeper into alternative perspectives. We need to, no matter what our age, do our homework. So again thank you for this episode. Thank you to every POC and ally who continues to share alternative perspectives and hold other accountable. Thank you for reaching out to us and trying to bring us closer to our ideal humanity. I hope people are listening. You deserve to be heard. You deserve every natural human right that every other human experiences and I hate that we are still fighting for it today because I wish it was already an obvious natural choice. But I am happy to fight with you, to learn from you and others, and to support and uplift you. I hope you find strength like Khary said and I hope that if you’ve felt that it is hopeless or you are not seen as human that the feeling becomes a very distant one soon. I’m rambling and on a RU-vid comment section no less so I’ll cut it here, but please know that you are valued and appreciated by at least one other person even if they are a stranger. And if anyone has additional resources or suggestions on how to learn and grow please @ me in the replies. I want to be better.

Police in other countries are also racist, also do racial profiling, etc. Racism runs deep in many if not all societies, maybe just amplified to a higher extreme in the USA. And when the system, the education and training for police is based on identifying threads by racial profiling and see black people and people of color as less-than, it doesn't matter if this training lasts 6 weeks or 6 years. The "quality" remains the same. The whole system needs to be torn down and re-build.

34:32 I think it was important that Sam admitted that many people have known that there has been a problem for a long time. It reminds me of the #TimesUp issue. Just like the jokes about a black man not being able to catch a cab, there have been jokes for decades about the casting couch. I hope that that movement and #BlackLivesMatter makes people less willing to theoritically acceptance behavior/systems that are clearly morally unacceptable and be true allies to those being harmed. Khary was so right that the Police Union failed George Floyd's murderer. What an amazing, clear-thinking man he is. And I'm so happy that he brought up City Councils. This is where much of the work has to be done to reform policing in our country. What Khary said about feeling human because people like Sam and Liam and others were hearing him was so poignant. He put to words what I have been trying to explain for well over 15 years... throughout history this can & does apply to so many differences between people. Gender, culture, ideology, religion.... I could continue to list all the ways that throughout the history of the world this applies to (and reference examples) but I'd probably hit the character limit. I've seen & heard & tried to explain why regardless of the MANY things that NEED to be addressed & improved & changed... I still love this place I was born & believe in hope for a better future. The truth of his words & phrasing is so perfect. "...the people that come before me have worked too hard & too long..." Humanity is & has from the start struggled. We struggle to advance, grow, learn... life & nature in general from the very start is a struggle. I didn't ask to be born when, where, or what I am, but I do have the ability (& the right) to choose things in & for my life now. Change, advancements, improvements, growth don't happen if no one tries... and if we all stop trying, at best nothing gets better & at worst... regression. Also, on a personal level I think back to those who struggled & fought & died for equality & hope of "better"... I would rather try, & be grateful for those who were (& are) brave enough to keep holding on to that dream and belief of a better future where all are seen & treated as equals. I was heavily influenced by certain shows & authors growing up. As an adult I am still drawn towards entertainment & that which strengthens my hope & desire to keep struggling for that better future for all. To focus on how to move forward in a positive direction & not just keep repeating the injustices of the past. 🖖 He eloquently expressed what I have wanted to reply to those who have made such comments to me & to those around me. I'm grateful that such issues are addressed & opinions and thoughts are shared in entertainment. Leading by example is something I hope continues to be a presence of positive influence on the world.... because we've seen & got more than enough negative examples through history & present day. 😓 Don't forget to love each other❣️

You are correct to speak of the world, because it resonates around the world : reminding many of their own local struggles against racism and police abuse and excessive powers. A clear junction is how folks who are poor, marginalized or viewed as bums see a side of the police that many white middle-class folks will not see. The issues with police power in relation to fair law enforcement, violence, profiling and impunity is rather widespread across the world, so we can help or influence each other, but it is much worse in some regions, notably in the USA ironically. ( I am from Quebec City, Canada, and it stirs huge debate here too )

This was an excellent episode. Thank you Sam and Liam for providing another outlet to address what is and has been the most important issue facing us as a country. And thank you so much Khary for the eloquence and passion you exhibited in your dialog. One thing which stood out to me was when you said that you needed Sam and Liam. I love Sam and Liam, but I think they missed an opportunity here to respond that they also needed you. That is perhaps one of the central cruxes of this division in the country. We need each other, now more than ever before. Healing starts by recognizing that we are all part of a greater whole, and if we accept that we need others then society becomes much more vibrant and harmonious, giving opportunity to all instead of just a few. Thanks again. I look forward to these discussions as we tread carefully into this uncertain future.

Human life matter, no matter your color, gender or age! As a person from another country, I was not aware how bad it was/is in America. And I have had thoughts like: well maybe it's just because people with darker skin, has a tendency to be more criminal, and therefore the police, employer and other people stereotype. Myself I don't believe that any race (I hate that word, we are all humans) are more criminal or bad. However i believe that some gets pushed down the wrong road for various reasons. I have never understood the debate, here from my side of the world. Thank you Khary, Liam and Sam for enlightening me on the situation in America. Keep up the great work and i hope justice and equal rights will come to every human being in the world.

Khary Payton speaks beautifully about this. Staying informed weighs heavy on my heart and this is the first time I’ve heard someone speak so powerfully and hopefully about all this. Truly uplifting ♥️

This show being 3-4 weeks behind is such a trip. I watch the news and wonder how it'll translate to the next episode...in the future.

I wonder how many unarmed black men have been shot who think of themselves as the kind of person who can de escalate a situation. I know Philando Castile was that sort of man but he didn’t get the opportunity to de escalate.

it shouldn’t be the job of black people to de-escalate the situation. There shouldn’t be a situation to de-escalate, and it’s sickening that when a white person is pulled over they’re thinking ‘oh, man, I hope I don’t get a fine’ whereas a black person thinks ‘I hope I don’t get murdered’. PoC shouldn’t have to talk the police out of killing them with little to no provocation when they’re just trying to live their lives. But this is the reality. We have to have hope that this movement, and these protests, will change that reality. BLM.

Friendly Redneck Neighbor Ok. That’s literally false but i guess you believe in ‘alt facts’, right? There are more white people in the US, but a smaller proportion are killed than the proportion of black people. If you look at useful statistics that could actually be used in any statistical analysis beyond high school, 3x more black people proportionally are killed by police in the US. While only making up around 12% of the US population, black Americans make up over 30% of the prison population and black people are sentenced for disproportionately long amounts of time for the exact same crime, compared to white people. If you understood such complex ideas such as ‘minorities’ and ‘statistics’, you may grasp that. Also, that’s a terrible argument. ‘The police actually murder white people too so we should all be ok with them’? Surely this means you’d be more for defunding and restructuring the police, because you’d be part of a targeted group. Of those white people killed, the majority (over 50%) have mental health issues, and a further fraction are part of another visible minority, and most of and/or the rest are activists (almost always human rights activists and labour activists, statistically). None are killed because being white makes the police think they’re suspicious and less human. It’s not a race issue for white people, because they’re the powerful majority without hundred of years of racist pseudoscience fuelling stereotypy. They are killed because policing is a fundamentally flawed and violent system that does nothing to reduce crime and everything to oppress the vulnerable and keep people living in fear. I doubt you genuinely believe that there’s no racial discrepancy, or maybe you simply think that black people commit more crime and deserve more violence. Anyone who openly calls them self a redneck is likely beyond reasoning with. TL;DR This commenter pulled a fake number out of their ass. Proportionally, black people face more police violence and misuse of the justice system, the numbers just don’t seem to make sense because there are fewer black Americans than white. It’s also not ok to murder white people, but they’re not murdered for being white. In 2019, more than 1,000 people were murdered by police.

Thank you Khary. We need each other to take care of each other. To keep people in power accountable because we care for them and don't want them to do anything they will regret. Thanks for sharing your experience and your thoughts.
