We don't have the RTR yet and everything stated here is just our opinion, just like all content on RC Review but we go through the setup and component selection of the $500 Ready to Run Axial SCX10.3. 3-channel only and integrated receiver/esc a problem or no big deal?

I get the points you are making but on the flip side an RTR vehicle usually doesn't have the features of the kit version, so I can see the compromise on how many channels it's has out the box. The firma40 is way more programmable than any rtr esc normally would be,.. pretty much every feature a 1080 has except for the bec... so most folks won't need to upgrade. An external bec is an easy install or direct power servo when upgrade time comes round. I feel your complaints of these vehicle make it seem like a bad purchase but the sheer scale looks and excellent body, dig transmission, beadlocks, inner fenders etc make it just a great different choice in the marketplace. Cheers mate 👍

RTRs are usually good starting points or building blocks. This one seems to have roadblocks to future upgrades and is just meant to be unchanged in terms of motor and electronics. The firma40 looks like it has potential for configuration but not sure if it comes with the program card needed to configure it.

I just started crawling and love it. I race 1/10 amd 1/8 buggies for years and still racing. Best part in this hobby is assembling the kit. You learn how everything works. With an RTR you don't have any idea how to fix it if it craps out on you.....you end up going to your local hobbyshop and spend money for repairs..... that's not fun..... unless you like spending money. LOL

I just bought the scx10 III RTR yesterday, as the local hobby shop had it for $450 (instead of $499), and so far, its been running well. I also bought a smart charger and 2S 5000 battery as well, since I was already in the market to buy the charger and battery for my other RC products. As for the ESC/Receiver combo, it seems to work well, and I already have a dynamite ESC programmer at home, so I can customize the ESC as needed, but so far out of the box, its programmed well. I'm currently on vacation and wanted something to play around with while on my trip and don't have the ability to build and paint where I'm staying at. I like that it comes in Sting Gray, which matches my real full scale Jeep Wrangler JLU. I like that the LED lights come with the RTR as for the 3 channel radio..its seems really basic, but I'll most likely upgrade to a 5 channel in the near future,, but for something that I can pack in my (real) jeep and take with me on road trips, this RTR is fun to mess around with.

Exactly, at this point just getting started, I'm not the least bit interested in spending 2 days building a kit, researching and figuring out all the motor, servo, & electronics compatibility needs and requirements. I'd have no issue with the complexity of a build, I just want to pull it out of the box, throw my battery in it, and go crawl it. The other shit will come in time if I get the bug. I've got plenty of airplanes to "wrench" on to keep flying, as well. This is grins & giggles with a pretty damned nice and outfitted truck. There's a lot of value in that for many of us, I'm sure. Mine will be here in 2 days.

I understand your opinion on the rtr car but like you said, you'll need a better transmitter, at least a 4 channel for using all the whistles and bells. If you want to go brushless and want to upgrade the transmitter you're better of buying the kit version. If you don't like building it yourself you can ask a friend or pay someone to do it for you. At the end it will be cheaper than the rtr version and you have all whistles and bells 🤷‍♂️ great vids so far, I like what I see and it's a huge help for buying or not buying the right upgrades for my trx4. I'm more a track racer but I actually like crawling with my daughter. Crawling is just more fun factor, at the track there is a sort of competition factor which is fun to of course. Keep up the good work 👍

After owning a few Axial 28 scalers, two Redcat Gen 8s, a TRX4 Bronco, and TRX6 I think the best use of $500 is a TRX4 Sport with a nice Holmes Hobbies motor, Flysky GT3, HW 1080 ESC, some Amazon wheels, Amazon Hyrax knockoffs, Pro Comp Dual Stage foam and beer if there is any money left over. You can always buy the 2 speed gear sets if you want to go fast with the sport. IMO it's the best bang for the buck and what I reccomend to friends.

So....I BOUGHT it! First vehicle since my Team Associated RC10 back in the 80's! Heavy into aircraft now, all with Spektrum. The 1 channel short is typical of some HH aircraft, also. Enough to fly but you need a new Tx and servo to work flaps. A shrewd corporate maneuver to sell more gear once the bug has bitten! It was a good start as a beginner but I bought an expensive Tx afterwards and I'm DONE for a few years because I knew I'd buy more planes. That was a given. I bought this Jeep without worry after hearing the 2 speed was really not a necessary function on a crawler but DIG is a benefit. I think I'll be completely satisfied with 3 channel for now and if the bug strikes, I'll go buy a real good Tx and run with that. Interesting thoughts on the Firma combo ESC/Rx. I run a few of the Avian ESC's (air version of Firma similar to Hobbyking but tweeked) in aircraft and they are ALL programmable for voltage, etc. So is it confirmed that this one is not? Must be proprietary just for this rig. Spektrum SMART is a cool technology so I'll embrace it for now.

😁 I’ve spent more than 10hrs on just painting & detailing a body in contrast my go fast race stuff the bodies get painted with about as much care as a taxi at Macco 😂 I’ve never been a fan of all in 1 type electronics I like having everything modular that way you can upgrade individual pieces or replace just a single damaged component instead of throw it all out. I get what Spectrum is trying to do it’s the same with Traxxas, their battery system TQi radio system and chargers but at least the RX isn’t built into the ESC. BTW a 2ch spectrum RX is only about $30 in the grand scheme of things if you were keeping the RTR radio it’s not that bad. Personally I usually never buy RTR’s, but when I do the first thing to go is all the RTR electronics anyway.

Lights and plastic body parts are nice. However I have had a feeling that hobby class RC vehicles have been becoming more toy like for a year now. I am now more convinced of it than ever. Even before I felt this way with all the corporate intrigue of the past several years, bankruptcies, consolidation issues, buyouts, etc. began to cause me concern. Vehicle costs are through the roof! For that ever increasing cost we are getting less rather than more for our money. This RTR has definitely crossed the line into toyland! The very cheap electronics of this RTR is the harbinger of doom for our hobby. I fear that the Red cat Gen.8 Axe edition will be the last time we see a manufacturer endeavor to provide us quality and affordability in one package. Given the choice between a Gen.8 Axe or this toy, I will take the Gen 8 Axe every time! Just Saying.

This really seems to be the case. The parent company forces the product designers to hit a bunch of feature checkboxes like 2-speed, portals, molded engine. The team doesn't believe in them so they deliver a 2-speed transmission with no range and engine detail with a hood that does not open. A body rollcage that is not visible either. And then they are forced to use IC3, company servos, integrated receiver/esc since they save cost and help the other brand. Meanwhile the vehicle suffers and the iconic brand as well.

I heard the esc receiver is programable ? Idk how much but they made it sound like it does what you need ? And the guys at axial said the 2 speed ratio was too close anyways most people just want to crawl with one speed and use the dig ? So idk the trx sport is one speed etc ?
@RCReviewChannel
@RCReviewChannel 4 года назад
Good points. The ESC is programmable but one needs to buy a program card to do it. It is ok but is missing a few programming features like BEC voltage. Yes, not the 2-speed transmission is not useful to all people because the ratio is too close 2nd gear is only 40% faster than first. That should be fixed IMHO. The transmission gears are in there too adding weight to the vehicle even though it is not used.

@FalconWing1813
@FalconWing1813 4 года назад
I think it would have been better to leave the Dig and 2 speed as an upgrade option. Also the receiver and speed controller should be the cheaper separate versions. Leave the second servo off as well for future upgrades. This could have reduced cost. For me buying a RTR is the price tag. That is the deciding factor and trying to convince my wife i need 500+ dollars for this will be a tuff sell. Should be priced to compete with the TRX 4 Sport. I dont mind doing upgrades later as more money comes available. And its kinda fun upgrading at least for me. The Jeep body looks super cool and is the main reason i would want this. But I think traxxas has done better at making a entry level RTR Model at entry level prices AND a fully loaded RTR for those that want to spend the extra money. I do hope that they will change this RTR and what it comes with to reduce the price. Again it does look great!
@RCReviewChannel
@RCReviewChannel 4 года назад
Exactly!!!! And sell it at $399 so it can be way more competitive. DIG is really not that useful unless it can be used under full load. 2-speed needs a big range jump to be worth the trouble. And then one really needs unlocking differentials so it won't flip over at full speed.
@Jrod_FPV

Before you knock the firma 40a ESC, I think you should drive it first. It is fully configurable. It's basically a HW 1080 with the only difference being it is fixed at 6 volt output instead of being adjustable up to 7.4 v. I have the firma 40a ESC and love it. I use it with a DX5C radio for all of the smart telemetry goodness. If you already have spectrum radios the Firma 40a is a really logical choice. It's like buying a 1080 and getting a free 4ch smart receiver. If you planned on upgrading this RTR truck to brushless then I agree it's not as ideal to also replace the receiver as well as the ESC, but then again brushless systems are rather expensive so the Rx becomes a pretty small price by comparison... And if you're buying an RTR and upgrading it then you probably have enough money to begin with since you planned on throwing out the stock equipment anyway. You won't be ragging on the ESC when you drive it! 😁
@RCReviewChannel
@RCReviewChannel 4 года назад
We read through all the documentation. Seems it's missing a few key config options. And there's no program card. The buyer has to buy another part?? Anyway, the key issue is it's tied into the receiver and that limits all options.
@Jrod_FPV
@Jrod_FPV 4 года назад
@@RCReviewChannel i have to remind myself, not everyone buying this RTR prefers Spektrum radio. But to be clear, the limitation is only related to buying a new Rx. I didn't catch that it was missing any config options... what is it missing in your opinion? Yeah the Firma program card is $15 on horizon website.... i didn't realize HW1080 came with a program card, that's nice for sure. Now, you'll see i'm a huge nerd that likes to look at the numbers and compare different scenarios... so i laid some different scenarios out to see how much it really costs to have the limitation you mentioned. This RTR + brushless setup: Say you want that brushless power/ control. New motor ($50 ?) , New ESC ( $60 ?) , New Rx ( $30 ?) Comparing the price of a new $30 receiver to the $610 total you're paying for the RTR + upgrade = 30 / ( $50 + $60 + $500 ) = 5% ... So IMO it's not really a limiting factor here... it's 5% more cost because you have to buy a new Rx to complete your upgrade package. This RTR + New Rx: For when you don't use spektrum radio. You will also have to replace the ESC. New Rx ( $30 ?) + New ESC ($40). So 40 / 530 = 7% more cost. I agree, this is significant. No extra cost related to Rx for: Upgrade to new brushed motor. ... upping to a spektrum Tx with more channels. (bummer this comes with only 3ch Tx) Now the awesome part for guys that use spektrum...when you buy this for a new build you get a 4ch Rx AND great ESC for $45. That's basically a free $40 receiver when you buy the Firma ESC. and less wiring to do in your truck. which i found nice. So doing the same calculation we see where the real value is... -40 / 45 = 81% savings for the spektrum user. I'm not saying there's ZERO limitations in this situation... just showing how i think they're relatively small at 5% and 7% and I think this was a great esc to include though, maybe not perfect for all DIY'ers. I bet Axial was thinking that most guys that want to use their own Rx instead of Spektrum will also opt for the KIT. Since those guys likely also want to choose other specific components too.

@thor_4017
@thor_4017 3 года назад
Are you sure you want it more open? I tried hpi crawler king with open differential. It barely moved off-road, good for flat surface only. 3-4cm snow and it wouldn't move on flat surface. Fwd with locked differential would be more usable off-road. Scx10 III dig can do that. If the differential was sealed with silicone fluid the trx-4 open differential would make more sense. Traxxas didn't put sealed differential in 2wd slash either. Worst flaw you can make on a 2wd off-road kit.

Hopefully Axial will release this as a bare chassis roller only kit, no body, wheels, radio, esc, motor, like Redcat's PACK GEN8. This way, we add our own 4 channel radio to get all the features. If Axial releases that version, it should be priced under $200 to be competitive. The current kit with the JK (ugh everybody is sick of jeeps) and typical crappy wheels is priced way too much. Side note: they're owned by Horizon Hobby, so guaranteed they'll screw things up.

We think that Axial is managed by crazy people ! Since SCX10 II they made some really stupid savings, that devaluate their good product. We have 4 Axial: - 3 of 4 broke the servo and we discovered that are "almost fully" metal gear, because all the gear are metal EXCEPT ONE (really incredible!!), so that plastic gear breaks as you fall and touch front tire on the ground - Honcho has metal vs plastic gears, so that metal one erode plastic one (for 10 euro we get all metal gear from Amazon) - tires are awful for performance and also look (too thin and too hard) And now the news from you (appreciable as usual !): - 3 channel in a four channel environment - all-in-one ESC+receiver...to save how much...10 dollars ?? (the cheap, but good Hobbywing 1060 costs 16 Euro!) They made everything to make you choose to get stuff from other vendors... really crazy choice !! If you try Reely, except for the body (quite row), you get a good quality Crawler, really comparable with Axial, but RTR at 230 Euro !! And after some months the servo is still working! It's a real sadness for a good brand as Axial.

The finance geniuses at the top figure that all out well before it ever goes to market.. your always better in my opinion to buy the kit because you get to do with it what you choose, buy the motor you want, buy the radio /esc etc that you like!! buying the RTR your paying a good amount more up front & getting cheap 20 dollar motors & electronics that your gonna toss anyhow.. either way your not necessarily saving per say, because you'll still be shelling out $$ for better parts, but atleast with the kit your not burning money & tossing it to the trash!! I couldnt tell ya at the rtr motors /electronics/ controllers that I have & never used..... 👍🏼

$130 more than the kit. $60 for a HW1080 and HH sport motor, $20 for dss servo, $30 for 2 micro servos, and $20 for another receiver to run with the radio you already have... you'll get a far better performing kit with full functionality. Or get an $80 fs gt5/ rc6gs for $50-60 more than the rtr kit. If you want dig and trans you'll need to ditch the esc cause its tied to the receiver, buy another dig servo, and get a receiver. Comparing the two kits, getting a gt5, 1080, and 2nd micro servo puts you at $640 ($615 with keeping the esc and getting the DX5C radio instead)... the same setup with a better motor, likely stronger, and the peace of mind knowing that fasteners were loc-tited and gears were greased costs $560. No brainer... the RTR sucks. If they gave a 4 channel remote then more value would be there. At least with trax-ass you get a decent radio and full functionality with their RTR. It's hard to build the traxxas kits for cheaper than the RTR making sure either has full functionality. The SCX is basically adding $115 to the RTR just to have full functionality.

I did totally missed they were using a receiver / esc combo. It is supposed to be 40A and waterproof, won't rush final thoughts until you test it (maybe it is amazing and this was the way to squeeze that performance in the price), but first impression is not good . At least it has a programming card sold separately. Axial said they did prioritize the dig because most people don't care on the 2 speed that much (this is also why they are not updating the transmission for 2 more different gear ratios, that may be the reason why people buying this car shall not really care about 2 speed). I understand the rationale, but then why carrying all those gears around? O would prefer the dig, and won't be able to use both unless I go for a big electronics upgrade (which would not be my priority if I'm buying the RTR) Love the aesthetics, suspension and chassis but I think the TRX4 is a better package for what this vehicle is aimed to.

This review has many problems in my opinion just this this review is based off his opinions. One a rtr that comes brushed wouldn't have the option to just go brushless. Why? Because a brushed esc can not run a brushless motor so regardless yes you have to replace the esc and motor. Another thing is they went with the spektrum smart esc because its a smart esc. He didn't explain any of the functions of the esc. It is a 4 channel and it runs on DSMR so you can easily go to a spektrum dx5 and so on to have more channels so all you have to add is the sx107 servo for 2 speed option. The esc is fully programmable with a program box and has a lot of options to go with and has 2 plugs to run lights off of and 3s capable. But in theory this rtr is setup just like most out there only to have to upgrade the transmitter for more functions and most in the hobby already have a remote for this unless they are not running spektrum.

Where are you going axial ?? My 1st axial compared to my last. And some others i steered clear of in between(capra) nope. Think im allset. Just 1 very simple Example.. My 11 year old scx 1 still has most, if not all of its original hardware. Somewhere between the yeti and the bomber the hardware got...... Softer ? I'll just stop there b4 i get to any real issues. I could be writing all night. I should revisit my idea of the gen 8 axe. When the gen 8 first came out i took a hard look. Then the wendango ...wrath looking brushless rock racer came out but wasn't quite what i wanted. I noticed cause it seemed like a good deal. I bought a redcat kaiju a couple months ago. It IS a good deal. I think redcats heading in the right direction. I have never b4 had a rtr that was assembled this well. Who ever put this one together, my hats off to you. Outstanding job. Grease, lock tite, this guy even used wrenches to tighten stuff. Everything was adjusted perfectly. There is ALWAYS something wrong w a ready to run... But im yet to find it on this redcat. My only slight disappointment, its not really 8th scale. The electronics and motor are but the truck is 10th. Its the same size as a stock 1999 traxxas tmaxx 2.5. No its not the biggest toughest most durable truck out there but i feel its an awesome truck for the money. Its also making me reconsider redcat. I will be looking out to see whats next from them.
@melmyrtle5765
@melmyrtle5765 4 года назад
As much as I really want to like the truck it just has too many issues. I really hate the integrated electronic system for the RTR that was a terrible idea. The other thing is I've seen on a couple other reviews the tolerances between shafts and gears look horrible. Major play between the gear and the shaft That's all bad in a crawler and any RC for that fact. Where they had an opportunity to make something a lot better than their competition I think they really missed the mark. In the price point and with the features the Gen 8 axe and the TRX4 bronco just seem to be so much better of vehicles. When I first seen it they quickly made its way to the top of my list of two buy vehicles in the near future. Unfortunately it has slipped way down that list. Even the kit for the price point and the quality I'm getting I would rather add an element RC or gmade or even an RGT or an MST. Do I think the truck has a lot of potential sure but not without putting enough money into it that you could have literally bought in one of the other rigs in its class. That's just my two cents personally I wanted to give money to axial for the next vehicle in my list so I went with an SMT-10. I hope they use that money to refine the SCX10III .maybe in the future after they've refined it I will add one to my fleet Time will tell.

I’ll certainly NOT be purchasing this gilded-lily. After discovering my thumb was repeatedly and unwantedly activating the DIG on my RTR Capra I fashioned a guard to keep my thumb from accidentally doing so. Then I discovered the wireless digital headphones I regularly wear while driving my RC crawlers would occasionally/erroneously ‘activate’ the DIG feature and force me to disconnect then reconnect the battery (a reboot) so that the DIG would DIS-engage. I finally pulled the DIG’s servo/receiver plug and zip-tied the transmission into constant 4WD. If Axial thinks I’m going to pay $500 for a provenly problematic DIG system I don’t want and/or a completely superfluous 2-speed transmission I have absolutely no need for they are sadly mistaken.
