Excellent Review...I bought this RTR about 9 days ago and the price was $449. My DIG servo failed, so I bought a new servo, but also, HH will be sending me a new servo anyways, so I'll use it as a spare, or to activate the 2 speed transmission after I get a new transmitter, but that's low priority for now. I have a scale RC jeep that has the HW1080 and programming card, so I'll use that for this RTR as well. Overall I like it a lot, and my nieces and nephews are having fun with it. In addition, I own a real jeep and took this RC jeep on one of our club meet ups, and the club members (especially the kids) had so much fun with this.
One of my life dreams is to drive a Rubicon jeep on the Rubicon trail...since getting into trail trucks now I wanna jeep it AND run my tiny trucks on it lol
I am just going to buy another TRX-4 and have a lot of fun with it. And maybe in 1-2 years the Version 2 of this SCX 10 III will be a good crawler to buy...
Get a REDCAT GEN8! u wont be disappointed, it rly owns the SCX10 and the TRX4 in so many ways its crazy =) But well, if u wanna go 100% plastic go for the Axial, otherwise get the Gen8
@@BenSuzi1980 gen8 doesn't own the trx4 that's just biased. I have a trx4 sport and gen8 and the trx4 is actually more capable and durable, but the gen8 is great too.
I have 2 of these. one for me and one for the wife. lost my front drive shaft slip spline the second time out. wasn't beating on it just crawling on rocks. the wife on the other hand tested out the strength of the body thoroughly on hers lol.
I got mine today TOO! (& I removed ALL the junky horror-izon electronics), put n a HW1080, 35t rebuildable motor, set the esc at 6 volts to not smoke the junky dig servo. Upon turning it on, ALL the magical blue smoke escapes the (junky) dig servo. After replacing that with an emax, it works great! . NOT mine, for the fiancee. 👍 keep up YOUR great videos!
I just got this unit a few days ago. It’s working great. ( right now ). Besides the annoying clicking in the transmission/ transfer case. I like it. As with all my rtr RC’s I always upgrade them. Is it worth $500 out of the box? Nope more like $375-425 range and that’s pushing it. But as for the unit in general. It pretty much depends on who built them at the factory that day/ week. Some are duds and some are as they should be. But that’s the risk we all take when buying RTR RC’s. Thank you for the reviews even if they’re brutally honest at times.
Nice vid as usual. Your channel led me to get an SCX24 and I pre-ordered a SCX10-II Cherokee recently. Wanted to start with something basic and move up so I can appreciate portals and other features. Thanks for the reviews and advice on upgrades.
I took out my original SCX10 the other day and let me tell you I never knew how good the first one was until I ran this new SCX10 III. The original SCX10 is quiet and smooth. To be honest, I bought the III because it's an Axial and for the new Jeep body. If you are looking at this video to decide what RTR crawler to buy, the TRX4 is still the best!!!
I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and once I tweaked it a bit the thing is fun. I have a pretty nasty rock pile that I run on and it handles pretty decent for an RTR. The dig servo (sx107)is junk and haven’t been able to use that function yet at all. It’s got some really low gears and it’s really smooth on the low speed crawls.
Great review Francis (sp?) As always! My number one source for honest unbiased reviews! I also would like to say even on most of the negative reviews you've done you have tried to modify/upgrade and show us the outcome. I think that's a GREAT aspect I dont think anyone else does, at least not with the sole purposes as to inform us. And I think that adds a invaluable perspective to the decision process, you show well this this n that ...isn't that well, but if you do this this and that....you can expect similar results as this. That was the tipping on my decision about the great trx4 sport/redcat gen8 dilemma! I'd like to thank you for all the work and effort you put forth to produce these videos it's much appreciated! I also like seeing you just get out n crawl/play with your rigs! And your recent addition of the family is great to see, your son is already perty skilled driver! I'm sorry I'm terrible with names mean no offense lol. Be safe and I hope to see you become one of, if not the biggest RC channel out! Bless you and your family be safe! Carful with grandma on those rocks!😮
Ha, ha... thanks Thomas. I learn with each video. It's all about pros and cons. And if a vehicle has potential and has fixable issues, we'll pursue it. That's not my family but a dear friend who helps out the channel at every opportunity. My kids are in college now. We mountain bike every other day and high-five the whole time. Enthusiasm in this world can get us far!!
Thank you again for your informative review, i bought the previous model SCX10 II after from Anain afterwatching your review, im very satisfied with it all around.
I gotta say, i feel like a trx 4 defender just offers a wonderful chassis that is in need of a 20kg servo $18, 1080 esc $42, and a HH trailmaster $19, and your way better off. However, axial does have a nice platform here.
Somewhere in there is a great handling basic scx10ii.Lots more possibilities for lots more money.I think i'll skip this one and just pic and choose any of those upgrades and add it to my scx10ii and get the capra kit for something different.I do enjoy your in depth videos and usually use them to save money and get just what I need, thx.
Ive been watching your channel for a while now, always wondered if this paint store ever called the police on you guys for loitering out front. Lol. It looks like a cool place though, besides all the traffic. You should review some other projects you have going, a wall of rigs behind you. Love the videos, keep them coming. 👍🏼
Lol he has done a LOT of RC reviews. Not just rigs, tires servos, radios. AND he buys his stuff so he isnt pressured into giving them a break. My #1 guy for RC reviews! I started out in the hobby with the redcat gen7 sport, and ole dirty bi@tch will always have a special place in my heart when it came time to upgrade the redcat gen8 had JUST came out. As a company I love redcat but I was leery about the dependability and durability. I was torn between it and the Traxxas trx4 sport because of RC reviews reviews on the two I went with the trx4 sport SO glad I did! Lil red is a goat n I've beat the tar outta him and haven't broken ANYTHING. All I did was throw on a pair of Duratrax deepwoods tires...just because, a cheapo Amazon servo, 20$ and added a custom paint job. GREAT rig, only problem is it's a HARD show to follow lol The scx10 III rtr, besides looks hasn't knocked it off the #1 spot.
I've got a fresh SCX10 ii kit to build and I'm still glad I went 2 rather than 3 in kit form. The 3 RTR makes no sense at all to me. Great review again 🙂👍
I just bought a trx4 because I didn't want to buy the kit of this one. Of course now the RTR is available. But after watching this review I think they did me a favor by waiting to release the RTR.
Thanks bro, seriously! It puts my mind at ease knowing I made the right choice. I'm crawling on a budget and I value your opinion and a look at trucks I can't always afford.👍👊
Another very good Review, Francis!! I would never buy an RTR, this is certainly no exception. Horizon made some questionable decisions with this... For $500.00 - they COULD have given you a FOUR Channel Radio!! They have them. Leaving out functionality is not good value. And they left the CLICKING in the Transmission!!! 😲 I have always loved Axial products... But this time they dropped the ball. I'd still get the SCX10 III Kit - when I can afford to. Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Looks like Horizon is back to putting pointless thing's out. Sure Trujillo will get a lot of the little stuff fixed but, he's no miracle worker. Great review as always. Wish I was still as interested as I was prior to the video. Guess I'll be going Associated this time.
A good honest review, but in my opinion, pretty negative overall. I'm glad you didn't sugar coat it. I just purchased the Gladiator PU, so it looks like I'll be spending some $$ to upgrade it.
I totally agree when he said an esc and receiver built together is a bad thing. I've only seen them together on the cheap $100 and under RCs. Man that's bad news.
Gilbert Garcia I have this ESC and it's actually a great ESC and form factor if you plan on running Spektrum and brushed. Otherwise it's an extra ~$40 to buy the other component if you want to change. To me it's perfect for the RTR because most that buy RTR understand they're paying a little extra so they don't have to build it and usually throw away some components anyway.
@@Jrod_FPV I understand it's not bad for you but in my case I see it as you can't upgrade a simple thing like jest your transmitter and receiver without you having to remove the esc also.
Gilbert Garcia yeah that's the one situation that you'll have to spend the extra $40 on a new ESC. But you also paid for the RTR transmitter that you planned on not using... So maybe sell it and put that money towards the new ESC? I just don't see the 2 in 1 as a huge setback when comparing an extra $40 to paying the extra for RTR in the first place. Maybe horizon/ Spektrum will make stand alone ESC in the future since this one works so well.
I don't know but if Traxxas with there TRX4 line up and Redcat gen 8 AXE can make them at or around $500 I think Axial SCX 10 lll could do a little better. The esc receiver combo could work fine but for only that reason I would not buy one. I would buy the kit if they make one. Let me know. Thanks.
@@Jrod_FPVmakes no sense to have a 4 channel system with a 3 channel transmitter. So how do you justify the RTR coming with no option to switch gears or even use the dig because it burns out right away?? Do you have some reason why the RTR is 500 without the ability to use the 2 speed transmission? Seems like horizon hobby just cut corners again and screwed this RTR up.
Just picked one up for my daughter... other Axial ESCs needed a BEC for use on 3s lipos... does this one work with 3S without issue...I'm guessing the 2-in-1 receiver/ESC would be tough to add a BEC to... other option would be a new receiver ...and an ESC with a good BEC , OR a separate BEC... Also wondering, what stock ESC settings are, such as lipo cutoff, etc... I may need to pick up that program card, hope not...
Great videos... congrats! My son is using his savings to get the rtr version. My question is, which is the best smart battery he should get? I read somewhere that for this particular truck the best place for the battery is on the side helping to balance the truck. Is that true? Please help us. Thanks
I love axial products but got a trx4 g500 then a sport while waiting on this 10.3. Now im not even sure i want one... they honestly dropped the ball. They came up just a little bit short in to many areas for this rtr to come years after the trx4....
Nice platform with some nice features. However for $500 I don’t want the “Bangood “ rx/esc and I might want turn both left and right. I have the first TRX4 kit and I wouldn’t want to give up the lockers. I think I will add another $100 and get a TRX6 and another $50 for servo and few other things. Another great review.
How about picking one of these up new for $349? Does that change anyone’s mind on it compared to the Base Camp or even the TRX4? Seems like a killer deal.
This is a great review. I agree totally with the 2 speed, you pay for it but can't use it? Most beginners are gonna want to shift gears. I'll do a kit.
It's going to depend a LOT on your terrain. But def go stiffer back > front, helps side hilling and lighter front helps articulate over obstacles. Hope this helps.
So without the additional servo how do you engage the two speed transmission exactly? I bought one of these units about three days ago, And have been using it strictly to rock crawl so to be honest I really haven’t had any need to go fast. After doing research I realized that it did have a two speed transmission after a couple of reviews on RU-vid said it did not. Also I remedied the left turn issue by shortening the tie rod from the servo all the way and then playing with the steering trim. What I have noticed is when I use the dig feature sometimes on disengage and the rear wheels are free spinning and not locked in at all. The truck gets a drug by strictly the front wheels, Until you toggle forward reverse a couple of times then they engage again. To be honest for 500 bucks I am having a blast with this thing and it is super capable....imo It’s worth the money!
To use the 2-speed transmission without buying additional parts, one has to move the servo from the DIG unit and not use the DIG at all. It's either DIG or 2-speed with stock electronics. Worthy of an experiment to see what is more useful. The advantage of 2-speed is one can put really low gearing for crawling but still achieve the desired high speed for trailing.
Did you try using the Hobbywing 1080 programming card on that ESC+receiver combo? I heard it works, but didn't have the opportunity to check if it really does
If one uses the hobbywing 1080 esc and their own transmitter and receiver, it will work for sure. But there's no chance of working with that 2in1 Firma unit with other electronics.
Make the DIG and the 2-speed transmission 'upgrades' for the buyer to later install and price it closer to $400 and I'll be interested. I had chronic issues with the DIG in my Axial RTR Capra to the point where I ultimately pulled the plug on the DIG's servo and zip-tied the transmission in constant 4WD. Multi-speed transmissions in RCs are a superfluous gimmick for people who like gimmicks. If a 5,000-lb Tesla 'S' can go 0 to 125mph without a multi-speed transmission I see no reason a 7-lb RC truck needs different.
Douglas Elliott I don't know man... you must have a different experience than me because 2 speeds are great for me. They offer a ton of control for crawling around 0.5mph. and also offer a fast cruising speed and is great for donuts. And I think it's hard to compare a Tesla and an rc toy with a brushed motor. Plus Tesla's don't crawl over obstacles taller than itself like my trucks do.
RC Review, I would like to have your opinion. Which is the best way to go in your opinion with the Capra. Hyrax on weighted stock wheels with provided foams or Hyrax with dual stage foams on unweighted stock wheels.? Thank you for any help you are willing to provide.
You definitely need the front weight on the Capra. In the wheels, 150 grams can be cheap. On the portals, brass costs more. The advantage of putting it on the portals is the the vehicle accelerates and brakes better since there's less rotational inertia.
Yes, about 8mm. The axles don't really do it but since the shocks are mounted about 8mm higher (center of the axle), the whole chassis is raised. Designers usually have to make adjustments to counter this. In this case though, the body and the motor are the culprit. So high and heavy.
I waited on this when it was introduced as a kit. But ended up spending my money on a TRX4 Bronco. Glad I did. Don't get me wrong , I love my scx10ii and my Wraith but this new 3 just doesn't do it for me. For the money there is better stuff out there.
Very good review! Isn't the price a bit unreasonable and outdated at this time? 150 bucks on top of an Sendero, 200 on top of an gen8. I bought the SCX10 Chevy Blazer for 300 Bucks. With this much to upgrade and such strong competitors i hoped for a more competitive price setting this time -.-
We dont think it worth the money because it cant compete with a TRX4 Sport out on our trails. The truck ist to top heavy.Even i dont like one piece axels.i have to change the complete tube axel if a c hub break.
