This is a different type of mill, able to work either vertically or horizontally.
Horizontal mills excel at making linear cuts such as slots, shoulders, grooves, splines, keyways and gear teeth.
This machine is compact yet powerful. It is fitted with the proven 500W DC brushless motor and electronic control from the SX2 mill which gives very high torque, even at the lowest spindle speed. Belt driven and extremely quiet, the belt serving as a shock absorber in the event of a mishap.
In vertical mode, the headstock is held in a sliding overhead arm, which allows the spindle to be placed over the bed to the required positions. The headstock also tilts 45° left or right.
The spindle has a speed range of 200-2,000rpm.
Unusually, the table has a vertical rise and fall, allowing ample clearance under the spindle.
The table surface is precision ground and has 12mm T-slots.
To change from vertical to horizontal mode takes around 2 minutes and an arbor is provided to take slotting cutters etc.
All sliding faces are dovetailed and adjustable for accuracy, ensuring a long life.
For the model engineer who needs to take advantage of the horizontal milling facility this machine could be invaluable.

I bought the machine last week from Sieg Machines Germany and am delighted with it. It weighs 105 kg and is therefore much more rigid than the usual hobby milling machines you can buy for the same price, which are more or less just better drills. The problem of the Z-axis being too short has now been solved, the travel distance has been increased from 105 to 205 mm with a higher column, so there is nothing more to complain about. However, as with all Chinese machines for the hobby sector, the somewhat careless assembly of the machine in the factory is still to be criticized. In order to achieve accurate milling results, everything should be checked once and adjusted precisely. After that, the SU 1 works like its big sisters, which weigh a ton or two.

Hi, wo hast du die Maschine gekauft? Erst vor einigen Tagen? Auf der Sieg Webseite steht eine Lieferzeit von 12-14 Wochen.

Well nice to see it in action we see them in catalogs (color green generally) often and wondered how they machine for a bench-top horizontal and vertical milling machine for the hobbyist. We could see this for a great tool in second or final operation cuts in our production works. Thank you for sharing this sorry we are nearest 6 years late at discovering this machine. This universal milling looks nice and I think it is only suitable for cutting mild steel or softer. And the instructor is great

So small and tough right through the conversion! The designer/s must be appreciated.

Makes me appreciate my Sheldon horizontal mill even more after watching this, be ok for my 10 year old grandson to learn from. No power feed,, how verctal is that.

Vertical clearance and travel must be pretty limited 'cause he didn't demonstrate vertical milling. Probably didn't want to draw attention to the major lack of room in that area.

This machine is not on their website anymore. Looks like a rebrand of Sieg SU1 machine which looks like to be available on their website.

Reading the comments, it is getting poo pooed by the usual armchair experts. I think this would be a very nice machine for small projects. Much more ridged and accurate than the mill drill types. You would get a lot more capacity using tooling selected specifically for this machine. It is NOT a universal though.

I should've bought this instead of my X2... Live and learn, I suppose

I know this is an old comment but why should you have brought this instead of an X2? Just curious

Looks like a much more rigid setup; I’ve always had a fondness for horizontal mills. I’ve since bought a Van Norman #12, so it all worked out in the end.

Since the table doesn't pivot in either plane I'd be hard pressed to call it a universal mill at all. There's some half decent design in the machine, but no built in power feeds on the table and by the looks of it the spindle is fixed in the vertical orientation so you'd have to drill using the knee. Very rare to see any new machine today with horizontal capabilities but if I'm being honest I think I'd much rather keep my little 65 year old Atlas horizontal with all it's built in power feeds. Since Sieg already has quite a few vertical mills in various sizes I think they might have been better off designing it as a stand alone horizontal machine and add at least one axis power feed on the table. Just my opinion and worth about nothing I guess.

Absolutely right, it is only an H/V machine not a "universal" one, but given its limitations I'm sure some folks would still find it useful, my cheque though will be staying in my safe.

I have an Atlas that i basically did the same thing to.Used a Du more aux.milling attachment 3 MT. It is 1to1 ratio,so i can still use all the stock factory drive.works great.

A universal milling machine table should be able to swing about +/- 45deg. This is not a universal milling machine.

Super cool machine, but it doesn’t have a quill! I would like to see a unit made that trades off the horizontal configuration for a quill. I’m looking for a benchtop mill and I think these knee mills are much cooler than the column mills. And I would assume much more rigid?

P0tat07: I saw one of these in a Grizzly catalog under their Grizzly colors and branding. I am glad I saw it here and found out that there is no quill, which would make it almost useless to useless for drilling operations.
@user-ks5ff

Not having a quill actually makes it much more rigid, and would actually drill better holes, just much slower, the limitation of this machine is the space between the chuck and table, not the lack of a quill.
