The airbrush is unboxed, reviewed & road-tested for multiple uses - notably on a 1:35th scale Bronco Staghound Armoured Car.
In this short show, we look at how it performs.

Got the woodbox set on my 12th birthday, still using it over 15 years later. Never bought new tips either, if they get clogged they can be disassembled and cleaned easily (despite testors saying not to do this)

Agreed, to be honest, if you like the Azteks way of working, in that wooden box you have plenty enough for a lifetime of modelling. They are great and easy to clean as you say. Personally, as I've got older, I prefer something more weighty, but I keep the Azteks I own and will dust them off and use them again on a project, just to remind myself what they are like.

Their lifetime warranty was no joke. I bought a used Aztec brush off ebay and it started leaking air after a while. I contacted Testors to see if I can fix it somehow. I was fully expecting to buy a new one then they sent me a new brush without asking questions. It was years ago, but it was one of the best customer service I have had from any company.

Maybe not the same model but very similar to my first airbrush. At the time it was WAY cheaper than any Iwata, Paache, Master or any all metal airbrush. Plus the disassembly and cleaning did intimidate me at first with the latter kinds. This one is very straighforward, just changed the nozzle for the level of detail that you were painiting. It is a bit of an investment in the sense that you have to buy their cups and bottles but it has the advantage that it is flexible to be used as a gravity or siphon airbrush instead of only be one type. Cleanup was very simple but I learned the hard way that you needed to be very diligent about cleaning after each use. Enamel paints were easy to clean up with the proper thinner and if it got too clogged up that the nozzle will splatter or not spray at all then you can just submerge the nozzle in thinner in a jar and it usually got it to work again. Acrylics are a different story. If you let it dry in the nozzle the only thing that might work would be Dried Paint Solvent from Model Master. If an overnight soak in that did not unclog it you had to buy a new nozzle. Overall a good beginners airbrush that will help you gain confidence to continue airbrushing and use more advanced airbrushes without breaking the bank while teaching you how to properly maintain or find out that airbrushing isn't really for you without a substantial investment.

I received my first airbrush for Christmas (this Aztek A470L) and was curious as to how well it performs (I was skeptical since it's plastic) but I was very pleased to hear that it performs just as well! Can't wait to use it!

I've used mine for automotive AB for over 15 years. This is always my go to AB over all the rest. Works great with PPG,and all others using the Blue tip for all high end paints in auto industry as well as marine applications.

Great review and endorsement. I was VERY tempted to buy one of the Aztec sets, some 12-15 years ago, lifetime warranty etc etc. Visited several retailers did my research. What alarmed me were the amount of boxes with Aztecs ready for return to the manufacturer. All with similar faults, all with tamper proof bodies (no DIY repairs plus to even try and disassemble voided the warranty). It put me off, I was gutted. I loved all the features etc and the innovative design. I'm guessing though that many of these 'faulty' airbrushes could have been due to poor clean up after using acrylics 🤔🤔 I've used Iwata's they're great, but these days I have three Sparmax (DA trigger type, small dual action and a Flyer) and two Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes. They all clean up easily, the H&S having the edge with ease of clean up, also they're very versatile too with a great level of finish, even in my ham-fisted hands🙄🙄😉😆👍

You showed only adding, and I quote, a "small amount" of thinner to testors model master enamel paint. I did this to TWO A470's and it TOTALLY messed up the airbrushes!!! It needed the paint to be thinned WAY more than tat; down to the level of "milk consistency" !!!!!!!!
@Nectarman

modelmaster paint is already thinned for airbrush use

I had nothing but problems with this, over time the airflow becomes restricted due to the small air tube cut off being crushed constantly, it also feels cheap and nasty...

Ours still functioning well but boy does it feel like nothing in the hand after using our classic metal brushes. It is so light. Also we don't much like the way it keeps toppling out of every airbrush stand we have.

Hey, I just got mine, and it's my first, I was given the opportunity to get a cheap, but new one (central pneumatic, it suited me just fine) but THIS ONE IS THE WAY TO GO. no joke. The ease of use might make one question its integrity, but no way, this thing is sik.

This is a great review - thanks guys. But why does this airbrush get so much grief? It really is the marmite of all airbrushes! After this review I'm seriously considering it over an expensive H&S. How long have you had your trusty Aztek? Any issues? Your counsel is greatly appreciated!

what is the best compressor to use with this airbrush? does it work well with acryllic paint or does it need to be special acryllic for airbrush?
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 4 года назад
Any compressor is good for this airbrush, as long as it supplies air. The rest comes down to many factors, how much air, for how long and so on. Do want an air tank? Do you want it to be quiet or do you not mind running noise? A good place to start may be with the Aztek/Testors range of compressors, they may even do a promo bundle of both. Azteks spray well with any medium, acrylic, enamel etc. No need for a special paint, in fact there is a needle nozzle set for all types of paint and effects, that's what's unique about this set-up.

I'm puzzled as what you call the ribbed wheel on top of the body as a increase / decrease paint flow adjuster , is it not in fact according to Aztecs own instructions to change the airbrush from single action to double action use
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 8 лет назад
Good point - it seemed to "work" as a paint flow adjustor but is in fact officially for converting to single action - according to Aztek as you say - well spotted! We stand corrected.
@williamhall5893
@williamhall5893 4 года назад
It is actually used for both. It will adjust the spray cone or size but turning it all the way left will make it a double action and all the way right makes it a single action. All of the movement between those two points will adjust flow or rather come size.

The aztek put me off airbrushing for years, why compare it to a metal airbrush too? it's either better or just buy a metal one.
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 2 года назад
It's all history now, Aztek is finished. I'm glad I used one and have it in the collection. Aztek did make a metal bodied one and sadly I never tried that. That would have been a better comparison maybe.

I think the Aztek hose uses their own adaptor at the airbrush and a standard 1/8 connector (it is grey plastic) at the compressor.

_"these airbrushes suck!"_ Check your setup, you may be running your compressor in reverse (is it making a beeeep-beeeep-beeeep-beeeep sound). Make sure you've hooked the AB up to your compressor, not your vacuum cleaner. Failing that, donate the AB to a dentist, he can use it for getting the spit out of patients mouths. 😉
