I could have not agree with you more my man, I am from the old school and I tell you the difference today is that there are a lot of breakers but not enough b-boys and these cats cant up-rock to save they life and I am 42 and I can still go hard. Peace ZULU NATION
When Uprock started it was used by gangs as a way to lessen casualtys and settle disputes. The way it was done was, the two gangs came brought there dancers and marked a line(or drew) on the floor the dancers could not touch each other and could not pass the line. Behind the line on each side were weapons(imaginary) that you had to use to kill your opponent uprock was used as a way to kill your opponent without actually killing him. Thats why theres a line on the floor, hoped it helped.
and yea... rob and foots tore this song up... hahaha... much respect to foots... your freestyles are crazy man... cant wait to see footage of the rock bandit... yall should anticipate for that... hahaha...!! peace...!!
Uprock = Non contact, Kung-fu/Capoiera looking fighting-5 count dance done by 2 dancers against each other, or a group of many. Toprock = Footwork done upright (it's a modified version of uprock for breaking) Downrock = Footwork on the ground
@concreteallstars There are many views in how our dance started (in this case uprock), its all a matter of perspective. And you are not wrong I had heard that before also, about the "apache line". This is why I love hip hop history, I always learn something new. :) BtW are you Zuluu smurf from boogie brats?? If so Im a big fan!
Rocking came first in the late 60's, toprocks in bboying came around the mid 70's. In a sense, they're two different dances. Like really, just look at what they're doing compared to toprocking, I'm sure thats enough to show how different they are.
@SuperPluto10 Well maybe I was wrong on how it actually started, But uprock was used by "gangs" (crews), and it was a war between them. It was also used to settle disputes. I dont know all the details but I I'm a humble student of Hip hop and its culture. So if you have anymore information on the subject please post it here, i'm very interested in the roots of my dance. peace!
imo you always have to change the rules a bit to make it competition friendly. I mean I'm sure both competitors would have loved to just take that "taped line" off and just do it raw on the street. But hey its a comp with rules so you have to compromise. Props to both...keep this dance alive yall.
oh and by the way... im deephugz of Forever We Rock... along with rob nasty... rock bandit... wacko... raff... smokestaxx... and christina... so if anyone disagrees with us... we can direct you to the OG's and theyll say the same thing... im just gettin tired of reading posts of stuff that people dont kno what theyre talking bout... so hopefully me sayin this will be a direct method... oh and we kno hella hung... hahahaha...!!
@SuperPluto10 Actually no you don't. Crews were peaceful gangs. I forgot who but one of the hip-hop pioneers came up with the idea of not killing each other because everyone was losing members in gang wars so they came up with the fighting dance movement of up-rock. Theres alot more to the story but thats the outline. And if i'm not mistaken all gangs are family members/friends back then...
don't forget afrikaa baambata turning "the black spades" into hip-hop. ANY dance battle might start with "you wanna FIGHT, or you wanna ROCK?" REAL hip-hop was, just as BBoy said, a POSITIVE outlet for energy that sought to end violence. i get so annoyed with gangsta rappers saying they're hip-hop when they're hip-opposite! besides weapons, there were also moves like "i ripped your ear off" & "i'm sniffing it" or "i'm ducking your shot" etc. too it's a shame that gangstas ruined it after 1990
I hate this footage cuz it was before I went to Brooklyn to get my foundation and format down. Most people love jerks n burns...Bboys like doin jerks n burns...But most bboys cant dance...when it comes to freestyle thats your own style dance...When you talk about burns n counters thats another level of the game. Thats when it becomes like chess...burns aint nuthin unless you got your style first! CHECK OUT MY CLIP ROB NASTY AT CASTLES... I think thats what ur lookin for!
@BBoyJonB13 i think it was kids who watched gangs form a line, and had potential recruits walk between the line and get punched and kicked in order to join, the kids later got older and from that influenced came the dance, i might be wrong tho,??? i wasnt ther. smurf. MZK \
Next time whoever is video taping this you HAVE TO HAVE THE 2 DANCERS IN ONE SHOT at the same time. The LINE IS CALLED APACHIE LINE ghet to know Rocking this is not TopRock(or topstyle).Good batlle .............
wrong this is not bboyin... this is the rock dance, uprock, rockin... or whatever who likes to call it... and just to let u kno... the line IS part of the dance for rockin... just here to correct... peace...!!
yea they can and we dont mind it... its just that it wont be considered rockin... well more like i dont mind it... cuz i dont kno how the others would say bout it... otherwise talk to pjay71 on that debate... cuz i dont want to argue on the case of using rock in bboy sets... cuz people take shit the wrong way and get lost in mass confusion when it comes to terms... peace...
buzz... wrong...!! what u see bboys do in battles is not uprockin... rockin or whatever u want to call it... cuz remember this, bboying and rocking are 2 separate things... 2 separate dances...!! ure right on the rock dance comin before breakin did... becuz its what helped start bboying... and dont forget bout rubberband man (RIP) who... along with apache created this dance... here to correct and inform... peace...!!
well actually rock and uprock are practically the same thing... its just different terms... like bboying.. breaking... etc. etc. just so u dont get confused... i was separating the lines between bboying and rocking... u got the chrono order right... as for rubberband man... i believed he got stabbed according to founder 1 of lil dave rockers... go to Tiny1Love youtube account... he has various interviews on how it really was... best to learn from actual rockers... not bboys...
b-boying, like hip-hop itself is made up of sub-elements break dancing popping locking & uprock are all b-boying although usually people mean break dancing when they say b-boying
I don't wanna be disrespectful and I know a lot of bboys put in hard work, but this is a joke. I know times have changed but uprock's 1 of those classic old skool moves that even the new school bboys should be learning. It's almost like these guys are taking the piss. Respect to the Hodown event but the whole blue line and so called uprock is not impressive. IMO
looks like u dont kno what ure watching... its coo... and just to let u kno... we kno hella hung... me and rob nasty are also part of his crew... HUNG DYNASTY...!! hahaha...!!
BUT HOW CAN U JUDGE A BATTLE? U COUNT THE KILLS?WHAT IF I KEPT DO THE SWORD ONE, OVER AND OVER LIKE 50 TIMES DO I WIN? IM JUS A LIL LOST. THIS IS WHAT I MEAN. WATCH THIS. BBOY SUMMIT 99: Up Rock Battle ..PLEASE EXPLAIN. THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING IN BBOYING BUT I NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT.LOL
