Here is the B-Roll for the 1997 Roundabout production of the musical, 1776, which starred Brent Spiner as John Adams, Pat Hingle as Benjamin Franklin, Lauren Ward as Martha Jefferson, Michael Cumpsty as John Dickinson, Paul Michael Valley as Thomas Jefferson, Dashiell Eaves as the Courier, and Gregg Edelman as Edward Rutledge.

The original John Adams role was created by William Daniels, and he recreated the role in the movie. Thus, the stage started out with a John Adams as good as the movie.

Wow....this was the very FIRST show I ever saw on Broadway (saw it in previews, December 27th, 1997) at the Gershwin. I was there with a theatre group when I was in school, and everyone else was going to see Rent, but I wanted something different, so I went around and looked to see if I could find something interesting. I had NO idea what the show was aside from knowing it was a Tony Winner in the past and it had Brent Spiner in the cast (and I was, and still am, a huge Star Trek fan)...and I knew Brent was a Broadway actor from earlier in his career (Sunday in the Park with George)....I ended up getting Student Rush tickets and got front row , just off center stage right. The show definitely left me feeling very patriotic by the end of it, and I thoroughly enjoyed the performances by all. I ended up doing a production of the show a few years later in Ann Arbor at the Michigan Theatre with an amazing cast of people i liked, and it definitely was a highlight of my theatrical life, both seeing the show done professionally and then getting a chance to play in it myself (I was Roger Sherman, the delegate from Connecticut). Love this footage! Thanks!

It was the first ever Broadway show I saw too. I didn't know what to expect since I was a foreigner and didn't know much. I bought the tickets because of Data of Star Trek. Once it started I was in awe. It blew me away! Everything looked so awesome I was like a kid in the candy store. Best $45 I've ever spent! Then I was addicted to Broadway shows.

Thank you for posting this! Have always been on the look out for video of this production. For my father, he always spoke of this production as being a favorite to be a part of. It was is last broadway show to play in and so fitting. Many thanks again!

Wow! Thank you for posting this. I had given up hope of ever seeing footage like this. I saw this play in person 6 times. The entire cast was spectacular, especially Brent Spiner. It was amazing to see in person and that end scene where the scrim stops with the Declaration of Independence was breathtaking. Thank you. :)

I saw the London production of 1776 in 1970 and the movie version in 1972 (and several times since). It was a great show, but Brent Spiner had to work very hard to be seen as "obnoxious and disliked" and it shows here. He's just too likeable.

@@howie9751 Adams must be an especially different role to cast - the audience HAS to like him, but still be able to see why other people wouldn't like him. Spiner pulls it off about as well as anybody could - other than William Daniels, of course.

@@gelchert I agree with you, and I did enjoy the show. And I've seen another actor do the part who came off more like Daniels. Spiner was great, but still too likeable. Pat Hingle came off more like a John Adams, crusty and not likeable, the opposite of Howard Da Silva. BTW, have you ever seen William Daniels when he wasn't playing his typical crusty roles? He's hell funny.

Honestly, he might have been a touch too old for the part. Franklin was an elderly man by colonial standards at the time of the Declaration's writing, but he still had the energy to keep up with his fellow delegates. Hingle, by contrast, has a rough, barely audible voice and seems to struggle with his movement on-stage.

@@daigneauray7087 The kicker was that Rex Everhart, who'd understudied Howard da Silva as Franklin in the original production (and sang the role on the cast recording because da Silva was ill) also understudied Hingle in this production. Without any disrespect to the late Mr. Hingle, perhaps the producers could have thrown Everhart a bone?

Nice! I took a special trip from NC to see this. I seem to remember buying the cast recording the day of its release and then seeing the show that very same day, or maybe the next. I've been hoping through some miracle that it was filmed and will turn up on BroadwayHD. Ah well, this will do!

does anyone know where brent trained as a singer? he has quite an impressive voice for someone who has zero information to be found about his training. he sings a perfect aria in star trek, in italian, which i feel like a casual singer wouldn't be able to just sing.

He was a musical theater actor before he became famous on Star Trek (He was in Sunday in the Park with George on Broadway), so he was never just a 'casual singer' He also has an album of standards that he recorded, "Old Yellow Eyes is Back"

@@gionmusic oh i'm familiar with his album. i guess i was more curious if he trained specifically for his singing voice somewhere. now i'm assuming that voice lessons were merely part of the training he undertook while learning his craft. though i think it's safe to say he was already blessed with a decent singing voice for him to be as good as he was when he sang in tng (i'm thinking of the small bit of aria he performs in season 5).

This is how this revival should have been done. Again not every show and characters are for every actor or actress to play, and trying to say other wise is being redicous. I still cant believe Roundabout company even dreamed of letting a female revival of 1776 darken their theatre.

I saw this version on Broadway atter seeing the London production in 1970 and the movie in 1972. Brent Spiner was too likeable for the show and Pat Hingle came off as more obnoxious and disliked the Spiner. Nevertheless it was a great show and we had a wonderful time.

You can’t just enjoy something with out bringing politics into it. I welcome EVERY new production of this show. And of every show. Be innovative Broadway., let us enjoy all your wares!

@@RLucas3000 Politics infests our life today. Look at Hamilton: It's a great achievement, but if you think political considerations weren't involved in its creation, I have a bridge to sell. Think about this: if Hamilton were cast with actors of the same gender/race of the characters they were playing, the screaming would be heard from Broadway to the hinterland.
