What's the difference photographing with a dedicated monochrome, black and white digital camera, the Leica M10-M and a colour digital camera that has been modified with an Infrared 830nm filter, in this case, my Nikon D800. I take both camera out on a field shoot to compare the differences.

I’ve always had a strong preference for black and white stemming back to my early film days. I’m fairly brand new to Infrared and have to say so far loving it. In your comparison shots the IR to my eyes are stronger shots love em

I had Sigma SD Quattro with IR cut filter removed, was fun. I still have Ricoh GXR with converted module, okay. Had Q2 was great, yet not much wiggle room in editing obviously

I do prefer the Infrared. I have an Olympus full spectrum with a clip in 830nm filter

Great video.I was interested in the comparison of monochrome B&W vs 830nm it. Thank you very much.

Always great to see a new video from you. On the infrared front, I was talking to the guys in the camera shop discussing infrared, and they said “have you tried a filter”. I had no idea you could buy a screw on filter. So I got one and it is extremely interesting. Obviously it’s much cheaper than converting a camera body, but it comes with the big disadvantage that it acts as a 14 stop filter, so while it works well, it’s only for ultra long exposures. That said it does work very well, it creates the look and the shots are probably 90% of the way there compared to a real infrared camera, I say 90% because the skies don’t seem as black. However the gotcha is the fact that you can’t enjoy the lovely contrast in the clouds that you achieved. All the best from a dark and soggy England, Marcus

We cannot see IR light with our eyes. But we neither can see X-ray light. Or doppler sounds. There is a narrow window in EM radiation that we can 'see'. So all other wavelengths are out of scope. It doesn't matter how they look. We only know our world in visible light. All other 'lights' are just a rendering of what we would normally see. And since we have no reference (I haven't got a clue if what the IR sensor records in fact IS correct, I must just have trust in it) any output is correct. I'd recommend putting your body in 'sepia' or 'cyanotype' mode and just tell everybody that you have an IR converted body. They cannot disprove your assessment and only the two us (plus Peter) would know the real truth...

@@frutt5k I’m very happy with the look and you’re 100% right, no one really “knows”, it just gives another creative option for capturing light. The filter is great though, it was £50 and is small can be used with any of my cameras, now and into the future, so I’m very happy.

@@marcusoutdoors4999 Last summer I did a lot of tests with the sepia and cyano funtions of my Nikon. For some topics they really add effect. And for other they completely dullify an interesting scene. I made series (colour / BW / sepia / cyano) to see the effects. I put them online at my knipser site, domain NL, album 'sepia'

In the selfie shot analysis you say: the T shirt has more/less IR reflection. That is partly true. In visible light photography your body and clothes reflect more or less light. The light coming off your body/clothes is a fraction of the light falling onto it. But your body MAKES infrared light, so it is not only the reflection of it. Add to that that you are in Oz with generally higher temperatures. You also see it in the images of the trees: the leaves are 'whiter' since they PRODUCE more heat. It's not only reflection. All life forms radiate IR.

I enjoyed this. Next, I would be curious to see the difference in results with the Monochrome using red, orange, yellow and green filters. I have been shopping for filters but pull up short on buying them because they are pricey. Just curious anyway. Thanks! --Michael

I did do a video on colour filters on the Leica M10-M. Here is the link:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3c6p7f1u6HM.html

HI Where did you have your censor converted?

I bought the camera via eBay (USA site). The seller was Jacks Camera Shop. Their website is:jackscameraused.com They may have records on who does the conversions.

Monochrome still is recorded in RGB (or CMY, depending on your religion), yet the IR image is in the 4th colour and just cannot be compared, since even B/W images are in three colours. You should compare the IR images to the RED-ONLY channels. Or do a Blue -> Green -> Red -> IR comparison and see if there is a relation.

On the Nikon, due to the Bayer array, the TWO Green and one Blue cell per 'sensel quad' are virtually blacked out. Only the red sensel will pick up some light (radiation). So on the Nikon, 3/4 of the light is gone. 3/4 of the sensels (MP's) are gone too. That's 2 stops reduction. Add to that the transmission factor of the filter itself and you got your 3 to 4 stops. It would be interesting to see how the addition of the 830 nm filter to the M10 would work out. On the M10, there is no Bayer filter, so there are no blocked out channels, so the MP count on the Leica should be unchanged (unlike what happens to the D800). What is the effect of the demosaicing? The D800 will have a truly hard time, with 3 of the 4 sensels producing FFF's (or 000's), and trying to get a decent picture out of it, whereas the Leica (which probably has a completely different demosaicing formula) would have a lot less problems. Does it make any difference in results when you put the D800 in monochrome mode? I can imagine that in BW mode the D800 also employs a different demosaing algorithm. You always make me think harder ande deeper... I might be wrong here. Wouldn;t be the first time. Love it.
