Thank you for this helpful video. I started the process of changing an alternator today in an 02 Passat, I unbolted the sway bar thinking that I was removing it from the bottom, but realized I should just call it a day and watch a video to give me clarity on the process. You make it look much more sensible. Thanks again!👍

That was a great and so very informative video. I can't friggin believe you gotta take all that crap off the front end just to get to the darn thing! That's insane! What a piece of crap! Bro you are a life saver. I would have spent hours trying to figure out what all has to come off before I settled on that so you saved me a ton of time, frustration and swear words. There'll still be swear words but nowhere near as many.

Thank you for the visiuals. I'm about to do the same job. My setup looks pretty identical compared to the front of my 97' V6 Audi A4 FWD 12V. I thought I was gonna have to put it in full service position and disconnect the driver side upper radiator hose, it's going to be a tight squeeze! I also didn't realize I would have to remove the tensioner pulley as well. Looking at all the vehicles with their alternator just sitting at the top of the motor just makes me what to cringe at the job that awaits me. 😂

But it's may first time preforming this DIY on the alternator. @KimoLee-Azurelink
@KimoLee-Azurelink 2 года назад
Great video! Thanks! Are there any other parts we ought to have on hand while we have the car in service position, e.g,., belt tensioner, serpentine belt, etc.? Also, the Haynes manual says to make two "tools" out of two threaded rod and a couple of nuts to insert into the bolt holes of the crash bar to support the front end when pulled forward. You didn't do that. Did you run into any problems pushing the front end back into the chassis? Thanks
@CraftyWorkshopBuilds
@CraftyWorkshopBuilds 2 года назад
It would be a good time to change the serpentine belt if it's already passed the service time or close to it. Otherwise if it was recently changed you could reuse it. I usually use a Jack stand to support the radiator support once I remove it.
@KimoLee-Azurelink
@KimoLee-Azurelink 2 года назад
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds also left out removing the splash shield, and other things to disconnect from the radiator support: Disconnect 2 power steering oil cooler brackets at the bottom right of the radiator, disconnect the A/C line bracket beneath the alternator. I didn't do those and the first stressed the fitting of the oil cooler line when sliding the radiator support forward. The second would have created more space to insert and rotate the alternator. That was a bitch to take out and insert! Took me about 4.5 hours total, though it was my first time plus I had to deal with some rusted screws. So you did you completely remove the radiator support? I got two 6" metric bolts from my local hardware store and threaded them into the extra crash bar holes so the radiator support could slide out on them. Had to use two bottle jacks to lift it up during reassembly so the crash bar bolt holes were centered in the cutouts of the radiator support. Your video did make it seem a bit more simple than it was. Ha ha! But it was helpful. And I saved $1300 of labor cost! Thanks

@lorenzoparedes2306
@lorenzoparedes2306 Год назад
Update: I tried doing this repair but was unsuccessful. I just could not get enough clearance to pull out the original alternator. After much struggling, gave up and put everything back. Fortunately, the original unit is still working well; I was just doing preventive work, due to recent original battery failure and replacement with a new one. How far can one safely pull the radiator, cooling fan, and associated components away from the engine while the car is in "Service Mode"?
@CraftyWorkshopBuilds
@CraftyWorkshopBuilds Год назад
You'll be able to pull the radiator support out far enough to get out the Alternator. The Alternator is hard to come out because of the cavity that it's in, it only goes in and come out one way, watch the video and see the angle it came out.
