As someone who grew up on a farm with a wood stove and a very warm kitchen I got a big smile out of her tip for 'city folk'. To let the dough rise on a pillow on a radiator. Something I only saw in pictures from my Aunts in Boston or New York 😂😂❤
She looked so pleased and proud when her creations were finished. Deservedly so! I don't think I've ever seen those little cubes of fresh yeast in the store.
These have a great taste. In the 80's in Turkey much of bakery made these in cylindrical (individual) papers with raisins (about a size and shape of toilet paper inside carton) and sold as cake with raisins.
if you add the active yeast, sugar, and butter first before adding flour, let it sit for a several minutes and it should start forming little gas bubbles on its own (feeding on the sugars). Some of mom's active yeast packets were dead on arrival so this would save time if you're not sure if the yeast is actually active.(too close to date, improper storage, etc)
