Singin' in the Rain actually came from a Broadway Revue in the late '20s, and it's indeed only in the trailer here and not in the movie Babes in Arms. It looks like they're showing clips from other recent MGM musicals in that portion of the trailer. Judy did sing it in the movie Little Nellie Kelly though. She also sang Broadway Melody in Presenting Lily Mars, so that's 3 songs from Singin' in the Rain that she did before that movie was made. Interestingly enough, the stage version of Babes in Arms' most famous song, My Funny Valentine, wasn't in the film version as they actually scrapped and replaced most of the songs with other standards for the film version. Good Morning was the only new song written for the film

Quit pushing your politics onto something that is over 100 years old.

My grandmother graduated from high school a couple of years before this movie came out and she said that minstrel shows were something they regularly put on. It always blows my mind that people thought this was okay and entertaining.

As much as we all hate blackface, it has become such an important piece of film and theatre history, that removing it would be like denying that it ever existed. The scene represents a vaudeville act, and blackface was very commonly used in burlesque, vaudeville, and even into the ziegfeld follies, that removing the scene would take out so much of Mickey's character, and would probably effect the continuity of the story. but um yeah, theatre and film was really something else back then

@@lexxierowell Yeah, this is, really uncomfortable to watch, makes you feel dirty while watching it. But it is part of history, and we can't change that.

My question is, what does the makeup add to the scene , what does it add to the story ? If you remove the makeup and play the scene as-is, it would still hold up.

how on earth did the general public back then not find this sequence odd ? It adds nothing to the story. These are talented filmmakers, what was the motivation ? You can do the scene , as-is, without the makeup and it would still hold up. What does the make up add ?

Kind of insensitive to tell people to not get upset about such a racial offense towards black people. Possibly because you haven’t experienced the racial plight of African Americans. I personally don’t take offense as a black person but I wouldn’t expect others not to. Just like I wouldn’t expect Jews not to take offense if there was a movie portraying them as rats or other slander.

@@asagaibarbee9298 The racial plight of African Americans nowadays is all self inflicted. There's no social impediment for them compared to 75 years ago. They receive quotas in most education and employment situations and even get extra points on the SAT. The black on white violent crime rate is 50 times higher than the other way around. But having those advantages hasn't helped much. They still earn less and get lower grades in school. Most black students read and do math at a low grade level. Considering the very real problems I mentioned, black face is insignificant. And if another race wears white face I wouldn't get angry about it.
