Before they can walk or talk, infants start to do all sorts of cognitive feats that seem awfully smart for a baby.

@@edmund-osborne There's a difference between knowing the theory of how something works, and being aware of its existence. People have been aware of the existence of the phenomenon of gravity for as long as humans have existed. However, Newton was the one who actually began thinking about how it works.

My 2 year old niece has a surprisingly good sense of direction and memory. We live in the countryside and drove past my dad's workplace which is remote and miles away and she said that's where grandad works and there is a swimming pool there. She was 17 months old when we last went there and went to the swimming pool there!

My little cousin is not a baby anymore (he’s 3) but I still get so blown away by how clever toddlers can be. They live in Sri Lanka and I’m the only one in the family who doesn’t speak sinhala, everyone else is bilingual (except my cousin as he’s 3). He doesn’t get taught any English at the moment by his parents or in school, but he somehow figured that I only speak English, when we went there on holiday, and started talking to me in English. So obviously as he’s a toddler, the only thing he really says in general is “that’s mine” “I don’t want to” etc, and he started saying that to me in English when I took his seat. But like how?? I’m also surrounded by people speaking sinhala and I never picked it up, I still have no idea how to say “my chair” in sinhala. I’m so jealous lol as a language student I wish I’d been taught more languages when I was young because it’s sooo much harder now trying to learn it from a book...
@SSchithFoo

They create that association somehow. My friend in Australia whoes also Sinhala has a kid who by 2 figured out "white people" mainly speak English. he speaks Sinhala at home.

SSchithFoo it’s crazy!! once I visited some friends in spain and I mainly spoke English and my friend mainly Spanish. And her cousin was only 3 or 4 and somehow spoke to both of us at the same time, switching between English and Spanish. That’s even hard for adult interpreters!

@TheMauriki

Not headaches but the crying is indeed related. Babys have growth spurts where they learn new things. They go from nootion control to "Oh I got hands!" and trying to use them in a couple of days. All that change in their brain is frightening, so when your naby is fussy and nothing seems to help check if she has learnt a new ability.

kylerm18 might be more of a case of submersing yourself, I bet if you moved to Mexico or some other Spanish speaking country you would learn the language way quicker. Still is pretty cool though, babies in 5 years even being bilingual or trilingual 🤯🤯

@km1dash6
@km1dash6 5 лет назад
For context, I live in southern California. The majority of people around me spoke Spanish. I listen to music in Spanish and watch a lot of TV shows and movies in Spanish. I understand the language pretty well, and can pronounce words well. But learning a language is difficult when you're an adult compared to when you're a kid. Children up to age 5 are building their neural networks at a faster rate than adults do. So while it only takes a child a few years to fluently speak a language, most adults will take much longer to attain a similar level.

Now make a video about what animals can do at birth. Babies really are not that impressive, their responses are generic to any stimuli that is normal on earth. Humans literally are the one species that have the most defenseless and stupid infants out of any animal in the mammalian species due to their dumbass heads having to fit through the vaginal opening as well as not be crushed and deformed by the pelvis (if any possibility). More species on earth, MANY different animals are considerably smarter at birth, born knowing instinctual traits much like you're pointing out instinctual traits of a human in this video. You can tell how smart a kid is generally on how fast they start picking up language and start performing motor and oratory skills along with enunciation and pronunciation of words.

This is ridiculous. No one should be surprised by any of this, unless they've never spent more than two seconds with a child in their entire lives. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that babies learn how things work by observing how things work. If they were actually smart, they would figure out on their own that using their head to flip a switch is stupid regardless of who else is doing it that way. It is always funny to me when "scientists" talk about how "smart" babies or animals are, but that is only when you compare them to something that is virtually brain dead.
