It's a baby, meaning they are constantly soaking everything up. Talk to them like they are normal people, don't babble at them imo. "Baby talking" to me is literally trying to communicate with the baby in one way or another.

Naiadryade Helps them understand you better, because it exaggerates distinguishing features of the words, and also exaggerates the emotional aspects of your speech. Baby-talk as much as you want !!

Celina K you’re close! Cats ONLY meow at humans, not among each other, because they know it gets our attention. A kitten’s cry sounds much like a human baby, and their voice stays mostly the same as they age. ALL MEOWS are “baby cry”!!

It kind of blows my mind that our instinctive response to seeing a baby is to talk in a way that will best develop their language skills, adapting as they get older so as to constantly be meeting their needs. AND WE HAVE NO IDEA WE’RE DOING IT!

LOL...baby talk is so natural...I didn’t care at all about babies, until my nephew was born. And then I was suddenly ‚one of those people‘, making weird noises and talking in baby language. It just happened. It’s like a switch in your brain clicks and suddenly, you’re in ‚baby-mode‘. And I would have a hard time believing, that something so natural and instinctual is not good for the little ones. Although it never hurts, to have science on your side....

I would say there's a good argument for keeping your grammar simple when it comes to baby talk. I mean it's utterly counterproductive to expect a baby who is not yet able to hold their head up under their own power to sit up. It's likewise counterproductive to expect a baby who is not yet able to sit up to crawl. It's counterproductive to expect a baby who is not yet able to crawl to find a way to walk. Progress happens in stages. _Simple_ grammar is the _foundation_ for more _advanced_ grammar.

From what I remember of the old studies, and what people call baby talk, it's not the prosody that people were calling baby talk or having issues with. It's the mutation of sounds "Where's da widdle doggy?" where "widdle" is what's considered damaging.

I never quite understood the whole "how is the child supposed to learn 'adult language' this way" argument. After all, every little kids grammar is a mess and it takes years (often well into high school) to get all the complexities of language. And noone uses baby talk with someone older than say 3...

@Cai Doubtful. Languages that dont use the Roman alphabet also take a long time to master, though. Japanese for instance has so many characters that most people dont know them all. (But just Kanji characters specifically. The other two are ordinary alphabets everyone should know.)

My father baby-talked my youngest brother until he was 5 or 6. Now my brother is 9 and he can't pronounce his words correctly. We told my father to start easing up on the baby talk when my brother's language began forming structure, so that he wouldn't become confused. My father staunchly refused because he thought it was cute and now my brother is 9 but still struggles to say "shark" and "ball".

@Cai I don't know about the other languages but French is way worse than English. Not only are there random gender to nouns, but also complicated verb tenses and grammar. Most people just don't even learn to speak it correctly at all (like with negation which everyone now just do halfway)

The thing that gets me is when this sort of behavior doesn't evolve as the child grows older. I'm a teacher, and I see some parents still baby-talk their kids, or talk to them as if they are too stupid to understand complex thought.

That's not the child failing to evolve it's the parent refusing to accept that their child has began to grow. It's a growing problem in society sadly. But don't fret there are still good parents out there that know how to raise a child and let them grow. My brother is 34 and even his friends are still amazed at the adult relationship we have with them. There's still the whole them being our parents but really if we decided to address each other by first names in public no one would think we were their kids.

When parents say not to use “baby talk,” it’s usually referring to “goochy goochy goo!” and “you’re just a little pudgie budgie little boo boo, yes you are!” Pretty much all parents use the high-pitched, varying tone and short sentences. It’s the senseless babbling that is frustrating as a parent.

As far as I'm informed the unusual pronunciations (exaggerated, high-pitched) are normal and good for babies until their first birthday or so. And the baby words are bad at least for children older than that.

Yes. It’s the nonsense words that are at best unhelpful to the baby, and at worse going to drive anyone old enough to state an opinion into giving you a lecture on not talking baby talk - which you should probably be grateful for it’s better than strangling you as they’re imagining in their head. ;)

Yes, you shouldn't do this, but playing wolf howling sounds to your pup makes him make that sound every now and then. It's cute when they are young, but extremely loud and annoying when they become big boys

I do this to my dog. 6 years later, he understands the meaning of key words and the assosciations of those words with situations. Kinda like having a mute 2 year-old human in the house.

Seems to. Cats seem to enjoy higher pitched voices, and are more likely to come over to you. As for training dogs, or cats, using varied pitch helps them identify key words. It’s also important to be consistent with your words. Everyone who talks to the animal will ideally use the same term and intonation for an action, object, person etc. Example: Your dog is trying to mooch food, or you’re doing a messy or dangerous activity, you probably want them to go to their bed, or cage, or mat and leave you alone. If you refer to their spot as any of the above, interchangeably, and sometimes say ‘go lie down’, you’re less likely to get consistent obedience. If everyone agrees to say “go to your mat” the message is clear and consistent, and understanding and obedience will improve significantly.

In the late 90's into the 00's, I know baby talk was definitely discouraged in parenting advice. I remember my mother telling me not to baby-talk to my infant brother. I also saw they talked about it in an episode of Gilmore Girls.

I think the problem is the occasional incorrect vocabulary (as it happens in my native tongue - Portuguese) used in baby talk like: Where is the wuff-wuff? or Papa is driving the beep-beep.

I read an article that referred to that "phenomenon" in my native language and dialect: The normal and correct words are short and simple, the baby-talky versions of those words however are long and complicated. The article said that first teaching your child an incorrect and difficult word for "train" or "horse" instead of the normal and easy one from the beginning makes it harder for babies to learn words. Firstly, because those baby-talk words are hard to pronounce for a baby and secondly, because they have to un-learn one word and learn a normal word after a short time.

Absolutely. Use proper words. Simplify and use short sentences and a song-song tone, whatever, but use real words please, since they will be expected to say these words, and communicate with a wider audience than just you eventually.

Baby talking to your pets like a cat or dog also can activate the dopamine channels in the brain, which is why when cats see you when you come home after work their meows are more high pitch and much louder. They're excited to see you, and baby talking in return strokes that reward center in the brain!

Can't say for certain for others but i know for myself when i criticize "baby talk" it's the type of babble where there's no coherent words let alone phrase. Was happily surprised to agree with the video as I have had this discussion with friends.

I can't really bring myself to do babytalking. The biggest problem is that I don't get any response and I'm soo used to doing conversations based on asking additional questions to the responses I get for other questions that I can't really have a conversation other way. Makes it really easy to talk to people on everyday but babies just can't get me and I feel like a disgrace as I can't participate in making a great human being :/

Do these finding hold up when the baby directed speech doesn't use proper vocalizations, such as a "w" sound where an "r" sound should be? Because that's the type of talking that causes me concern when people modify their speech when talking to a baby.

Yes and no. Children will substitute sounds they have difficulty producing, either because they have yet to gain full control of their tongue and mouth or because they are still learning to make certain sounds. The English /r/ is a difficult sound (if I remember correctly, I'm too lazy to get my textbooks) and it's typically one of the last sounds a child learns. That one can take years. It's not neccesarily bad to give a child a substitute for a very difficult sound, but there's no need to over-do it, as sometimes happens. Which I'm guessing you're talking about. I for some reason found the /n/ hard for a while and substituted with a /k/. It worked itself out. :)

@@AnnekeOosterink But isn't it also the cases that if a child talks about for example a fish but pronounces a word as "fis" the child will correct you when you start saying "fis" on purpose and say something like "No, not "fis." Fish!" but both times pronouncing the word as "fis" but not realising that they're pronouncing the word "fish" wrong?

i mean, it's an exaggeration of normal human speech, so it's no different to learning to play a song by doing it slowly and more exaggerated until you can be good enough to do it normally.

I am pretty sure that the things that modern studies say is that the normal baby talk that comes to people naturally is good and the baby talk you consciously use is bad. And that the kind of baby talk that comes to people naturally is suitable for babies until their first birthday and the other kind of baby talk - the "fake" one - is bad for children older than that. So what I got from that were the following rules: Talk in a special voice with children twelve months and younger without inventing new words that make no sense and talk to children older than that normally. (Or almost normal. I do talk to children under maybe eighth to ten years old differently than to adults, but I surely use no baby talk.)

I know this is from five years ago, but the problem people have with using 'baby talk' with developing babies, isn't the tone. The happy, pitchy tone is fine - good even. It's about pronouncing words wrong constantly or using fake words instead of real ones that is the problem. It's fine to speak to your baby in a high pitched voice, because this lets the baby know you're happy and they are safe and are allowed to feel happy. But if you pair that with words like 'widdle' and 'nanners' it halts their language development. Definately use the happy, high pitch voice, but use actual words. And I'm not talking about scrapping mama or dada, because those are sounds a baby learns to distinct from others, which is one of the most important steps in a childs' language development. It's how they learn to separate different languages. But that's just my (5 year overdue) opinion and expertise on the matter :)

Normally I find it cringy because my sister would talk to my niece like this and and I always let out a big aggressive sigh being like “shut up with the cringyness” then my dad be like “son we had to talk to you like this when you were a baby” then I was like “I know you had to talk to me when I was her age but would this change the conversation If I said that I haven’t been hearing this trash talk since the year I was born” then he said that what I said makes total sense

Adchoa Lulle Feel free to talk to babies in normal speech if that’s what makes you feel comfortable speaking to them. It’s more important to talk to kids and engage them than how you speak. However, if others use baby-talk, let them. Provided they use real words, and not made up baby names for things.

My argument against baby speech isn't about grammar or even tone and pitch. To use your example you now have to teach the kid that it's a dog, k9, a puppy even, it was never a "doggy". That's the disservice.

Should I use baby talk with kids who have Autism or Down syndrome? They say it’s terrible for them around 4years and up. I have mild Autism, but my 2 of my 4 nephews have autism spectrum disorders. One is 5, the youngest is 1 year, 4 months. I love them and only want to nurture and bring them the best. Anyway, thanks.

This is total nonsense, I've implemented baby-talking for years and I've seen no change in the speech development of any of my dogs.

The only part of baby talk that really irritates me are the more "cutesy" words. At best, it's unnecessary, at worst, it's misleading and confusing.

how much baby talk are you supposed to use? if parents were to use more adult talk, along with baby talk, what kind of effect would that have on the child’s language development? if anyone knows feel free to help me out :) *edit:* an additional question, is there a point where baby talk DOES become detrimental to development? like if someone used baby talk with their kid until they were 8 years old or something?

It makes sense to me. Language is a very important inherent human trait. Because of this so much emphasis is placed on progeny’s ability to naturally acquire this skill. But wouldn’t also make sense that humans are naturally adept at teaching it too? To me selective pressure would work on both sides of the equation.

I wonder if listening to baby talk in other languages would help adults learn another language faster. I know in my own experience it's hard to pick out individual words and context without totally loosing track of the conversation

I don’t see that as baby-talk, I see baby talk as talking with a speech impediment that you don’t really have. All that other stuff is totes fine. I noticed it’s very helpful as well :)
