I was hearing this song at Doha airport as waiting for a flight. I was using a head phone but there was Girijadevi 's photo on screen. A man was sitting beside me saw the photo & asked me isn't she from Varanasi ? I was surprised because the man was an American. He told me that he is interested in Indian classical music & has gone Varanasi several times. I was delighted & very proud of my culture & heritage.
A divine composition by Wazid Ali, able rendition by Girija Devi transports us to the realm of still sad music of humanity couched in Benarasi style. No word is vocal for such style, it requires absorbtion. The Tabla played by Pandit Kumar Bose, an icon of Benaras Gharana, is a masterpiece rendition with "Ghoray Ki Chal", which I listened while Pandit Kissen Maharaj, his GURUJi, played at KOLKATA. My Ustadji Keramat Khan Sahib and my GURUJi Pandit Kanai Dutta ji used to say "Mithas Benarasi", which I have come to experience again. This is the greatness of our Hindustani Music..
Today I'm going to Delhi to my college after two years .came here to listen this soulful thumri by girija devi . Want to dive into it as the memories of these two years which I made at my home are making me cry 🥺
This is a thumri sir...........but with mastery and dedication.devotion she makes all to THE SUPREME, so "bhajan" technically may not be the right word but aesthetically can be heard that way...
Some singers give the listeners a secret, quick and divine escapade to trance and Girija Maa is one such. What voice, what accompaniment by the legendary Kumar Ji and Dharamnath Ji. All legends of Varanasi at one stage rendering magic. That explanation at 7:00...God bless the divinity
pure poetry in Appaji's unique style and voice with the ancient Banarasi flavour and great accompaniment by Kumar da. Thousand times I watched this video and every time I learn something new.
I wonder if the Indian classical music institutions are trying to keep the rich legacy of legends like Smt Girija Devi ji alive. I feel pity for the present generation who haven't witnessed this generation of legends. I will always share the work of these musical gems of India with my children, nephews and nieces. ❤️
Not many people know this but the words were penned in 1856 by the unfortunate Nawab of Oudh, Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of that prosperous ryasat when he was exiled by the British and was forever departing from his palace, to spend his remaining years far from his beloved Lucknow which he knew he will never see again. He was a great patron of art, music and poetry and a fairly good administrator as well. Not at all the incompetent, debauched lecherous no good as painted by the British officials to justify their taking over of his domains.
Yes....v true...His majesty was represented v rightly in the famous movie by Satyajit Ray...Shatranj ki khiladi...he was loved by all his subjects...a great patron of art....but alas the British..the conspirators ...simply killed him....v sad history
God bless Girija Devi for all the bliss and beauty she brought into this world. On the screen's right is Sunanda Sharma, her disciple and celebrated musical heir, a very great singer and artist herself. Sunanda Sharma is my daughter's Guruji since many years. My daughter Marged, who is a hindustani music singer and scholar, was blessed by meeting Girija Devi and living with her for some time. She will never forget the experience. Here she is performing for Girija Devi at her Guruji house ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LpfSKjBD4Og.html
You may not see but can absorb the "feeling benign" as told by William Wordsworth. This is the poetic eclat of Hindustani Music, where mind percolates and the soul chastens.
I had a divine opportunity to meet her at her home in Varanasi in 1992. What an elevating experience it was, heard her practicing some of the sub genres like Chaiti Tappa Thumri Khayal Kajri et al
It's pure music. Very sublime n serene . No words can describe the beauty of the eternal voice of legendary singer Girija Devi Ji. On ehas to listen to feel the heavenly music. 🙏🙏.
HINDUSTANI SANGEET JAGAT KE RAJ MATA KO KOTI KOTI 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 SWARG DHAM ME BHI APKA SANGEET KA DARWAR AISI HI LAGE... MAA SARASWATI KE BAR PUTRI ..BABA VISHWANATH KE DULARI JAHA RAHE KHUSHI RAHE.. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
When you realise Girija Devi sung this in her last days of life, when her "naihar" of life was about to "chooto jaye", it mixes the pain of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah with the inevitability of death in an unparalleled spiritual agony.
