In this course, lutenist Nigel North shares essential information that any guitarist should consider when approaching the music of J. S. Bach. His insights are widely applicable to all of Bach's music, from the simplest dance movements to his most complex fugues. North approaches the music of Bach from the concept of rhetoric - the ancient art of public speaking to persuade others.

Every instructor, whatever he teaches, should listen to Nigel North, Trevor Pinnock or Kenneth Gilbert and learn from them.

Normally I see Bach played on a swan neck lute- I would love to have the tab/sheet music for 13 course lute!

This 'normalization' of the Lute Slur is one of the things, that I think really distinguishes Lute technique, and the Lute Sound, from that of the guitar. Wonderful content.

True of the baroque lute, not the renaissance

The renaissance lute reserved slurs for ornaments.

@@AndSendMe I don't know the model, sorry.

@@brandonacker Thanks though. In the end its the individual luthier and the player to a great degree of course, but I like to know when a given model is particularly successful, especially as I find my taste gravitating more and more toward the sound of original instruments and away from most of the modern attempts. I was quite pleasantly surprised recently to find out that the lovely and particularly historical-sounding César Arias lute used by William Waters for his excellent Reusner recordings was based on the small Frei.
