The Spirit of '76: Nigel North performs works of Reusner
The English-born master of the lute, American citizen and Jacobs School of Music faculty member performs two suites by the Silesia-born Esaias Reusner - one from "Delitiae Testudinis” from Breslau 1667, and another from "Neue Lauten-Früchte" published in Leipzig in 1676.
This video concert originally premiered on our B Live series in the spring of 2021.

I like John Dowland's musical pieces and those of S. L. Weiss, needless to say about those of J. S. Bach, when they are played on lute-family instruments. In addition, I do not like performances by use of lutes as much as those by classical guitars. To such extent, I love music played on the guitar. But I love any pieces performed by this master Nigel North. Once I start listening to his music, nothing can distract me even when he plays pieces that are not so famous as these here. This is not what an amateur guitarist like me close to a beginner should say, but what this master expresses on his instrument is beyond any personal emotion, affection, judgment, etc. I thank Mr. Nigel North very much.

Thank you very much for the lute music by Reusner. Excellent play. Regarding the manuscrips: According to my limited information, the "Delitiae Testudinis” has been printed first in Brieg (1667) and in 1668 in Breslau. The "Neue Lauten-Früchte" has been first time printed in Berlin (1676) by the printing office of Mr. Runge.

"Holy Mercy I sing my feelings aloud in a song My voice breaks through the thick fog and dark clouds Merciful salvation is offered now The Lord Creator has already arrived Modern notions are poisonous cancer Atheism pushes away divine nature Evolutionary theory is born of stupidity I sing the truth, with lyrics simple and clear Each note conveys wisdom spreading through the body The divine path to salvation leads to the dance stage The Dafa that created the world connects you with a sacred destiny With infinite grace, the divine path begins September 7, 2019" Master Li Hongzhi (Hong Yin VI, from Falun Dafa teachings)

With all due respect, my delight that this very promising recital was posted was all but frustrated by the constant shifting of the right hand which creates a rather guitarristic flanger effect quite at odds with lute aesthetics. Or have I missed something since I studied the sources which was some years ago?

Hi, I hope this source below will help you enjoy this beautiful and thoughtful presentation. "…the player can certainly also move back and forth, once he has the necessary skill, when he wishes to change [ the tone ] and express something. Those still in the beginning stages will not be able to do this, for such varaition demands considerable asurance." - Study of the Lute (1727), Ernst Gottlieb Baron.

It is the modern synthetic Nylon String, to get good Sound you have to Play more to the soundhole, they dont sing good at bridge. Authentic real 'gut' strings have this singing and ringing closer to the bridge.
