I played this video to my godmother last week, who, once the smartest person I knew, is now dying of brain cancer and unable to form a coherent sentence. She listened to all of it with focused attention, calm and content. Heartfelt thanks to all the artists involved.
Bach's Mass in B minor is the single greatest composition in the entire world history of music. And I might add ... THIS particular performance with John Eliot Gardiner is among the greatest ever.
@@jeanjacquescorbier7130 - Yes. And the Spanish cellist Pablo Casals said of Bach ... "He is the God of music." Watch something - perhaps even on RU-vid? - called "The Joy of Bach." More or less a documentary about Bach's greatness.
It is beautiful, as are the St Matthew's & St John's Passions, The Messiah, Brahm's, Mozart's & Faure's Requiems etc. They are all amazing pieces of art, perhaps attaining the highest pinnacle of their form.

I can’t think of any work by Bach that doesn’t rise to that level, not even the lowly (but fabulous!) Orgelbüchlein. I listen all the time, what variety, beauty, complexity!
@@_Athanos it’s not unrightly famous. None of Bach’s works could be “unrightly” famous. However, when people say media is corrupt, your sense of the injustice of this toccata and fugue being so predominant in people’s minds when it comes to Bach is, indeed, partly a perception of the effects of this corruption. Media isn’t free like people seem to believe it is; if people understood how corrupt media was, they would never watch any news channel and would discontinue using most modern social media apps, throwing it all away in disgust, in favor of less parasitic forms of communication or perhaps artistic expression and other forms of harmony with the non-artificial world around us. I don’t listen to that toccata for the same reason you probably don’t; it’s so “overplayed.” I also don’t watch the news, ever, and don’t use social media except RU-vid comments, lol.
I listened to this Mass one day after my dear, too favorite dog passed away, Peppa. I'm destroyed, but Bach can comfort my heart with this celestial Music. To me, his masterpiece.
I've been listening to this BWV for 40+ years and THIS performance has brought me to tears, to air-conducting frenetically about my home office space and trying out my new ear buds, enhancing my delight. In my experience of musicians, Sir Gardiner is one of a handful of humble geniuses.
Quite simply the Grandest LIVE performance of Bach's B Minor Mass that I have heard. GARDINER and the MONTEVERDI CHOIR at the PHILHARMONIE DE PARIS ♥♥♥ ♥♥♥ ♥♥♥
Agreed. There are many great performances out there, and this one stands out. Man, all the solos in this version are so individual and they're all just at the pinnacle of musicianship. Congratulations to everyone involved. This is inspiration and uplift.
You can tell Gardiner is a league of his own in performing this work. He has a high degree of precision in every detail of this immense work: and the performers have just as much passion as him. My sincerest thanks, to Bach, the performers and the uploader. It's our best efforts as humans to give tranquility and hope to the soul.
As a work of art it truly is sublime. However… it makes little sense given its err subject matter. I mean, when you go to court, would you ask for leniency with a song??
It has become my custom now to listen to this performance of the Mass in B Minor every Good Friday. I don't expect to hear anything like it till the other side.
@Sven Soderlund - I certainly hope you’re not ignoring Bach’s other masterpieces! With so much variation, invention, and beauty, one could never be less than enchanted! I myself much prefer listening to one of Bach’s Passions, especially the St. Matthew Passion, during Holy Week, but the wonderful thing is, we can each listen to what we love best!
A true and perfect reflection of God's creation. No one who was without God in his mind and purpose could have written such music made for Heaven. The Heavenly host would have listened to Mozart; The heavenly hosts would have performed this work in honor of Bach, and how Awesome would that have been. Sola Gloria Deo.
Here you have a catholic mass written by a lutheran, conducted by an anglican (just guessing...) and being listened to and enjoyed by an atheist son of a jewish... isn't it marvelous?
Polish king Has ordered this music but it turned out to be too Protestant. Bach treated this as a chance to jump into fame. He was then in the beginning of his carreer.
I'm not quite sure this is what really happened. Seemingly Bach wrote an early (shorter) version in 1733 and gave a copy to Polish King Augustus III (instead of the king ordering it), in an attempt to get a position there (which he finally got some years later). However the full version was not completed until 1749.
Absolutely majestic performance of this heavenly mass of Johan Sebastian Bach… The Dona Nobis Pacem is simply beyond words….unbelievably beautiful. To me this work represents THE absolute essence of human achievement and divine inspiration.
Im sure JEG was so pissed at the end when someone started clapping before he let his hands down. Ruined the silence needed after such transcendence into the heavens.
One of the most wonderful conceptions of this monumental score in the last 40 years. John Eliot Gardiner and his group are extraordinary, now and his first marvellous recording

It's easy to take many of the greatest works for granted but the he work that these composers such as Bach and Handel put into their art is mind boggling.
My holiday reading this spring was Music in the Castle of Heaven, such a clever translation, (transliteration even?) of Himmelsburg, that title. Totally absorbing! The chapters on this mass were particularly enlightening and have considerably altered my perception of its form and also its fundamentally theatrical character. The thesis of the book is Bach's fascination with the operatic but mistrust of the opera, clearly apparent here. An instrumentalist and no longer a chorister I also much appreciate the absence of Baroquerie in the ensemble attaining a superb balance between the sung and the played.
Bach was truly divinely inspired in his composition of this music. Gardiner's direction and the talent and artistry of all the performers together have achieved something truly sublime. Bravo all.
An excellent rendering of this artwork by the Monteverdi choir, British soloists and Monteverdi orchestra conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. A relatively modest number of baroque instruments, a relatively large and splendid choir, that includes the vocal soloists. Excellent sound and video recording from 2016. The structure of the music is transparent and each instrument individually assured. The choir is able to produce solid masses of sound. The baroque trumpets, perfect. This is a rendering that approaches the sounds that must have been heard at the inside of Leipzig Saint Thomas Kirche. Félicitations.

@@richardh.stewart7728 Many thanks for your suggestion. I searched google and youtube and found very few and short instances of Ferdinand compositions. They are of course, excellent works. One would like to see and hear more substantial works, as they look promising.

Wow! What an extraordinary interpretation and performance! Breathtaking technique from both composer and performers! A striking balance and contrast between fast and slow; loud and quiet. A towering masterpiece from this greatest of all composers.

An extraordinary concert!!!! For me the Monteverdi Choir is one of the very, very best. (The only thing: the audience could have waited a bit longer with the aplause.)
Yes, the eternal problem! I've seen conductors who "trained" their home audiences to take their time and enjoy the vibe... HOWEVER, I have to admit I LOVE this audience's Xtreme Enthusiasm! I still have a big smile from it!
If they applauded too soon, it was _their emotional response to this fabulous music!!!_ This issue only seems to upset non-musicians, because those of us who sing and/or have played many of Bach’s pieces in public feel extremely gratified that the audience was so enthusiastic about our hard work and expertise! And clapping out of turn that bothers you enough to mention it in a comment, then I have no answer….I simply cannot see how this landmark performance can have been sullied by such a minor issue!
Why would anyone ever listen to any other performance?! (Or watch -- which is at least half the fun when the performers are this relaxed and enjoying themselves this much!)
I agree with you about this magnificent performance. And I also highly recommend the Netherlands Bach Society performance of this work. It’s soo good…I bet you’ll like it too
Bach meraviglioso compositore, Gardiner fantastico esecutore, coro, soli e orchestra spettacolari interpreti...
Bach’s music would be nothing without altos and basses….please don’t forget that! Thank God Bach didn’t have to listen to people telling him things like that!
Classical music often incorporates imagination and expression of nature. The harmonies meld with the sounds of nature, crafting a musical experience akin to a mystical natural landscape.
I adore the 'Dona Nobis Pacem', played and sung beautifully here. Bach's sublime choral music is safe in Sir John Eliot Gardiner's most capable hands. Bravo!
Tutto straordinario. Immensa!
’Osanna’ in its double-choir is without a doubt one of the greatest contrapunctal musical whole ever composed; the music is flowing forward naturally and beautifully despite the complex content. Very beautiful, emotional, poignant performance throughout.
What a performance!!!! That went straight into my saved list. Exquisite! What musicianship from every performer! Maestro Gardiner is beyond outstanding. What a thing of beauty. Thank-you for posting this for us to hear and see. Bravissimo!!!!

A wonderful performance of a great work. A culmination of years of composing. As a none believer you wont see me waxing lyrical about the wonders of god. Bach was, admittedly, inspired by his religious faith, but above all he was a technical composer of the highest order. To re work earlier works in such a way as to create a masterpiece is beyond comprehension. The B minor mass takes your breath away not because it's religious but because it is genius in action and the technical brilliance spans generations of music
Yet this is written for the Catholic church interestingly. Yes an astonishing work. I was privileged to sing in 1985. We performed 2 nights in a row. Second night, trumpet player fainted. Luckily there was a talented sub in the audience. I still remember the scary entry in the Sanctus.
@@pedroreiser2832 No, it uses the Catholic liturgy, not the Lutheran liturgy. If it were based upon the Protestant liturgy, it wouldn't be called a Mass. Plus, the fact that this Mass is in Latin is proof that it was written for the Catholic Church. Protestant churches have never done their services in Latin.
I am in awe of Michael Niesemann's performance on oboe in Qui Sedes ad Dexteram Patris [ 41:31 ] - never before heard it played with such unbridled & inspired enthusiasm.
