Composition aussi brillante que protéiforme - les parties les plus anciennes remontent à 1724, d’autres furent élaborées en 1733 pour l’obtention d’un poste à Dresde -, la Messe en si occupe Bach jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. L’ouvrage, plus œcuménique que catholique au sens strict, offre un condensé de son art porté à sa plus haute expression : un monde à part entière. C’est peu dire que ses interprètes avaient à cœur d’y revenir, après les deux Passions et un Oratorio de Noël couronnés de succès.
A composition as brilliant as it is protean - the earliest sections date back to 1724, others were written in 1733 in the hope of obtaining a post in Dresden - the Mass in B minor occupied Bach until the end of his life. The work, which is more ecumenical than strictly Catholic, offers a digest of his art at its expressive peak: a world in itself. It is an understatement to say that the performers on this recording were eager to revisit it, following their acclaimed interpretations of the two Passions and the Christmas Oratorio.
Die h-Moll-Messe von Bach ist ebenso glanzvoll wie vielgestaltig - die ältesten Partien entstanden 1724, andere wurden 1733 zur Erlangung eines Postens in Dresden ausgearbeitet - und beschäftigte den Komponisten bis an sein Lebensende. Streng genommen geht es eher um ein ökumenisches als um ein katholisches Werk. Bachs Kunst verdichtet sich hier und findet zu größter Ausdruckskraft: eine ganze Welt für sich. Die Interpreten konnten gar nicht anders, als auf sie zurückzukommen, nach den höchst erfolgreichen Aufnahmen der beiden Passionen und des Weihnachtsoratoriums.
