Thank you so much, Paul. I just heard Grigory Sokolov play this as his 6th and final encore at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It was magical. His version seems close to Gilels. Can't wait to return to the US and work on this masterpiece using one of the Gould arrangements. arrangement.

I was born with piano hands/fingers...can easily stretch 9 notes but problem is, I'm still trying to learn the F clef notes....4 yrs later...still trying! LoL I'm 71, so should I give up? BTW, I've followed you for YEARS...not sure when I 1st sub'd...but your video of you holding little Ellie moved me to tears and then thru the years of you PURE love, patience and giving her the best life any child could want. YOU hold the KEYS to what the world needs... a loving daddy like you are....the world needs your example....OK, i'll try play this, but reading the notes isn't easy for me....I love my vintage pump organ and play by ear....little bit of sight reading "The Lords Prayer" on Pump organ...but not many views because its just a little on the geeky side.... but is an amazing OLD instrument that I love playing every day...HEY btw, we live 2 miles above BARTON PARK...I help with kids group and activities so I had a park ranger come give a talk about Beavers AT Barton Park...the tree where beavers chewed around it months ago is still there. Come to Oregon, stay in our big Motorhome...play some music at The End of Oregon Trail...lovely place here, but is cold....so brrrrr.

btw,,,i began taking piano lessons, learning to read music a few years ago, played Prelude C Major, learned to play it perfectly in 2 months, so do you think I can learn this one in a few months IF I keep trying? I have serious joint pains....have EDS so hurts to play sometimes and I get discouraged, stop playing...maybe should move to Thailand? is warmer there...its going to snow tonight.

Excellent video thank you. In my opinion the last 3 bars of the piece have a clear "coda" character, it is better to hear them just once, at the very end, and the repetition sounds quite unnatural and forced after those last 3 bars. If you make the repetition after the fourth last bar of the piece and you play the last 3 bars at the very end of the piece, this means only once, it sounds much better and natural.

+Paul Barton Thanks for your video and this comment specifically: I didn't know about that prelude n.5 and thought Siloti derived his prelude from Bach's X prelude. What I came up with empirically after listening to Gillels' version in a loop is very close to the glimpses I caught of the arrangements Doug Gould made but I did notice that he reduced many of the chords to have octaves instead of 10th when I think Gillels preserved many of the 10th, which I think makes for a richer sound. Thanks again for this video.
@douggould2371
@douggould2371 8 лет назад
Hi Laurent You must have been looking at the rearrangement of this glorious performance for small hands. The full version does include all the 10ths, and even in the other versions I've tried to organise it between the hands to get as close as possible to Gilels. I discovered that Gilels actually rearranges the Siloti quite a bit himself! Fascinating - I felt like a musical detective,
@laurentbonetto
@laurentbonetto 8 лет назад
+Doug Gould I think that's what I must have been looking at indeed. Looking at the sheet you show in the video again, I see that these are the same chords I arrived at listening to Gillels and that the transcription even captures the subtle variation Gillels did on the right hand on measure 10 that allows for more evenness of the right hand in the first pass. Truly a wonderful interpretation he brought to the public! Thanks again for making me discover the Bach prelude this came from as well.
