I got sent this Bachmann 3MT by a chap called Chris who told me that it was making a "squeaky metallic sound" and his club guru wasn't able to sort it.

I can’t believe I missed an Episode! - Thanks algorithm for sending this one - I do like the 3mt, although I havnt purchased one yet due to my Budget Restraints, however I do have an old Triang one somewhere that may warrant a restoration. Cheers Bill

Hi Bill, Just a hint: Maybe you could use a 'rolling road' to investigate the movement of the Walschaert gear. It helped me in a lot of cases to see if all parts move freely. Anyway you are a master in solving problems and we learn a lot from you ! Thanks, Filip
@peterfitness1929

The rolling road is very useful to help diagnose those types of problems, as well as for running locos in.

I just love Walschaerts valve gear. Especially in N gauge. And even more so when working on a Minitrix locomotive and all the valve gear has to be disassembled every time you want to service it.
@Northerner_Transport_Hub
@Northerner_Transport_Hub 2 года назад
minitrix locos are good however some like the Ivatt 2mt tank are rubbish. The way the bunker and back end is just pushed into the model really bothers me. Especially because I wanted a tank engine like that when I start N gauge. Any ideas where to get cheap track by the way?

Very useful indeed, as ever, thank you. Recently I bought a 1999 Hornby Hawksworth County Class in near mint condition, but sold with a clunking sound. This video gives me some clues though I’m sure you solved a similar problem in an earlier video - if only I could remember which one!

Lovely loco. I was looking at a new Bachmann one today but eventually decided two brand new locos in one day is too much, especially as I don't currently have an OO layout, so just bought the even more fabulous 64xx Pannier. Your layout looks amazing now btw!!

Another triumph for your patience & determination. Though still not the best mechanically these newer Bachmann locos are better than their split chassis predecessors

Have a little bit of melted solder on the tip of the iron when trying to un-solder ... it helps break the joint.

It wasn't the type of fault you would first look for and, in any case, it was interesting to see the internals of this very nice loco. Maybe the Guru wasn't wearing his glasses 😊

You often find modern models are over oiled and when you pull them out of the box the chassis plate is often dripping with oil but then you find they have very little where it's needed.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 года назад
I think I heard a squeek as it went over the points and sharp curves at the beginning and end of your little test run. It was also audible when you were pushing it up and down your test track after disengaging the motor. Might be too high-pitched for your hearing, or might be that your microphone was picking it out better than your ears. I suspect the model's been dropped or roughly handled at some point. As well as the bent linkage in the valve gear, the regulator rod (don't know the proper name, but the thing going from near the cab roof to the crank half-way down the left side of the boiler) is also bent.
@ryanstewart25
@ryanstewart25 2 года назад
i also heard it. I'm thinking a bit of oil on the valve gear will fix or at least help it? that would be my first course of action at least
@lloydpenfold486
@lloydpenfold486 2 года назад
I could hear it too, a VERY faint "ee" sound. I wonder if, like a friend of mine, you are gradually losing the ability to hear higher pitched noises. Perhaps a hearing test (I must get one as well!).

Are your repair requests still open? My friend has a 90s Bachmann Manor that makes a strange grinding noise with one of the wheels, and a very noticeable wobble. Know what it could be?
@anthonyrichards3785

Possibly a broken axle muff?
@Northerner_Transport_Hub
@Northerner_Transport_Hub 2 года назад
@@anthonyrichards3785 Don't know what that is, but I'll pass it on to him. He thinks the quartering is wrong, but I wouldn't know too much as I've had lots of broken locomotives in my time.
@anthonyrichards3785
@anthonyrichards3785 2 года назад
On earlier Mainline and early Bachman Manors (and Moguls, etc), the driving wheels were joined to each other by being plugged into a plastic muff - a tube - and so we’re not one piece units with two wheels permanently attached as one unit. These muffs are notorious for splitting (through age). When that happens, one of the wheels will come loose and cease to be held in place. The quartering then goes and it’s goodnight Vienna. If this is the case, the best solution is fitting a later Bachman chassis (tricky to source) as repairs are very difficult. Superglue sometimes works and - I think - Peter’s Spares sometimes carry their own replacement muffs. Whether or not they have any is down to luck though…..

I know the older you get the less you can hear higher frequencies. Maybe my ears are just too old to hear the squeak. I did not hear anything except the clicking.

As a paid up member of the older generation, all I can say is, what a load of garbage modern models truly are, they really are manufactured to break sooner rather than later. Give me Hornby Dublo, Wrenn, Tri-ang, and older Hornby plus Lima, all built to last and when things fail, reasonably simple to repair, and no fiddly microprocessing rubbish either
