In this video we take a look at a surprise gift I received from one of our subscribers, it has stunning levels of detail.
British Rail built a large number of Vanwide wagons in response to high demand from various customers. They featured plywood sides with flush doors that slid to alleviate the problem of confined locations. The door opening method made a door aperture of 9ft possible which aided the loading of pallets by forklift truck. It was this wide opening that gave rise to their nickname. From 1977, 550 Vanwides were converted to VEA vans

Bachmann do produce some seriously impressive models, this wagon is superb and I believe it won’t fall apart under close inspection, probably not a cheap model but it’s a superb example, thanks for sharing.

Totally agree, not cheap, but can be had around the £26 mark.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Have you noticed that Bachmann don’t produce models with opening doors or glowing fireboxes in their steam engines, but they do produce solid sturdy models that do the business, I’m not a fan of the 3 tier loco level range as it’s not great value for the money in my opinion, £350 for sound fitted model with sexy windscreens and working fans is steep, for those whom pay those prices I say fair play, yet I’ve seen the same models in sales for £250 or less if your lucky, if the prices were lower in the first place they would sell more models, Accurascale sold their model at a good price, they rarely go for less in a sale.

@@StormmyStormmy agreed, Bachmann are generally great but the prices are outrageous. Dapol all the way for me

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I’m torn wether to get a network rail yellow livery class 73 but the reviews are quite negative, there was a review recently that gave it praise but that wasn’t the one I wanted, Dapol wagons are very good, the secondhand prices of their wagons is very high, best get them new as you get a better deal.

Enjoyed the close ups Mike, very nice review. Remembering those in bauxite and rail freight in the 70s 80s and 90s. That livery was heavily used by the MOD, Darren

That's one heck of a detailed van! Top class video-ing. Sounds like there's a story to be told regarding your experiences in operating manual brakes... The Fox is a Depot Plaque. They were a type of latter day shed code, used during the Sectoration period. I'm always tempted to buy locos sporting the Cardiff Canton plaque.

hello mike. great video, that van is very interesting though i have lots of Triang closed vans made in the 60s, love the Triang dock shunter, i also have this one in black, one of Triang's best locos made, they go on for ever if maintained, the last toy shop i ever saw them in was Zodiac toys in Uxbridge.

Thanks, ah yes I wanted one for years, last place I saw them was Browns toyshop in Winchester in the 80s, this one came to me all the way from Australia :)

What a result! I have just finished building some brass compensated bogies for a Caledonian coach. Soldering in all the safety loops on the brake gear I genuinely thought what is the point of this lol. But it does look good!

Mike, interesting thank you! MoD still has a fleet of Vanwides in use at SMC Marchwood. Filled with sandbags, they are used internally as barrier wagons lest arriving munition trains have to be stored overnight (one Vanwide is inserted between each loaded wagon in a bunded siding). They don't see much use as the preferred arrangement is to unload munitions immediately thence onto lighters for loading into ships in the Solent. However, are very much needed if munitions unloading is delayed. Will send you a photograph - Colin

It is a great piece of detailing but does seem a little pointless for the most part. I guess we’ll all have to start fitting endoscope cameras though the trackbed in order to make it worthwhile, watch your trains from above and below.
