@@solchapeau6343 I think there's been a misunderstanding of my comment. By "this is real scientists," I was referring to those microbiologists of whom Hank referred to as drunkenly trying to link themselves together and chant "do the Bacillaria". I was referring to the fact that real scientists are also real people, and like real people, the reasons they spend their lives investigating a potentially infinitely narrow scope of the universe is because of unbound interest and insatiable curiosity for that topic. But one nit-pick for you. While this channel may be targeted not at other microbiologists, but "science interested" people, James and Hank are, in fact, both scientists. Hank's degrees are in chemistry, not microbiology, but to say he's not a scientist is incorrect. Likewise, for the other science channels in his media empire, experts are consulted, sourced, and/or flat out the main host of the show. Not everyone can go get a degree in science. Many people have hobby level interests in science, however, and channels like these in Hank's media empire give people like that a chance to keep in the know about their fields of interest or discover new ones, between the workings of their daily lives making sure the rest of the world continues to function around scientists.

@@pheart2381 Yeah that's pretty likely, I study lab research and there's actually a lot of micro organisms and tiny animals (like Schmidtea Mediterranea, a type of flatworm) that you can cut up into pieces and all the separate pieces will grow an entire new organism.

When I read your comment I read it as a poem.. After rereading it, I wish I had answers to your question.

I think we still don’t even know how diatoms move. Maybe the movement detection involves voltage differences, electrostatics? If these are photosynthesis creatures, the only reason these guys want to move is to push predators FAR away, and for show (freaking out the microcosmos)

Just a thought, if you're proposing an idea for possible study in science, it's an hypothesis, not a theory. Using theory in th colloquial sense while talking about science just makes it easier for science deniers to try to ignore all the evidence behind actual scientific theories. There's a good chance thats how it works though, since it looks like they move too quick for chemical signaling, although how the physical movement itself .triggers the next one could be interesting to find out. Is it something ON the cell wall sliding past that does it, or some type of bio-electrical thing where it subtly jolts the next one and kind of says "come on". Quite a few possibilities i would think.

He mentioned that the adhesive comes from a slit. maybe that slit is also accompanied by a "rail" in the membrane. After that it would just have to contract fibers like normal muscles.
