Yeah, the majority of trees in the front are winter heros, citrus, white sapote and guavas. The sooks are planted strategically in between them. Hopefully the younger mangoes will become cold hardy like my Glenn.
Hey, George! I'm visiting from Canada. I've been in Melbourne since the end of July and I'm loving the weather here. I've been in t-shirts and even went swimming at the Great Ocean Road. It's incredible how many plants grow to full size here. I have yet to see any mangoes but a lot of people grow citrus, loquats, etc. here. I even saw prickly pear cactus growing wild on the roadsides in northwest Melbourne. Victoria has a lot to offer plant enthusiasts. Glad to see you back in the garden and posting videos.
It's all so relative, coming back from sunny and warm Queensland, the garden felt and looked like another world, even though it's been the warmest August in years. For you, visiting Melbourne has had the opposite effect, coming from Canada.
It's our northern summer currently so I left summer behind on this trip, and it's still warm for me here in Melbourne 😊. We take anything above 10°C as warm.
Hi George! We missed you. Welcome back!🎉 How old is your Cara Cara orange tree? When does your Ichikikijiro persimmon tree normally wake up from the dormancy? I have a newly purchased Ichikikijiro still no signs of green. Wondering if it is alive.
Cara Cara is around 3 years old. Most of my persimmons wake up in September, Hachiya wakes in August. I missed the garden, especially the fresh fruit, buying produce on travels makes one appreciate real food so much more.
Do you recommend any of the local nurseries for fruit trees? My brother in law wants to plant fruit trees in his yard and I would rather avoid Bunnings if it's possible. Daley's might not deliver in time before I head back.
Depends on what trees, tropical or temperate or both? For tropicals, it's hard to beat Police Rd nursery in Mulgrave, expensive but you're getting mature trees, some already fruiting. For temperate trees, Diacos nursery in Dingley is my favourite, cheaper than most others.
One of my larger red papaya plants died & so did a yellow one due root rot but they have other papaya plants to replace them with but it's a bit of a setback,we just had a lot of rain which caused root rot because they hate having "wet feet". My plants such as my fig, pomegranate & stone fruit plants are waking up now,I decided to drag my cassava plants from underneath the house because we've been forecasted with 21-23°C days & possibly up to 25°C which I am looking forward to because it's bye bye to the winter of 2024 in my area now !
You guys get a ton more sunshine and rain than Melbourne, borderline subtropical conditions. Global warming deniers are in the same boat as other conspiracy groups.
