SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW: On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took that famous ‘one giant leap for mankind’ on the moon’s surface. By 1972, eleven other men followed in those lunar footsteps. All were US citizens. After that, interest waned. The super powers lost interest in its closest neighbor. As with many trends, the moon is experiencing a comeback: China, Japan, India, Russia, Europe and the USA - all known space nations - want a piece of it and are planning a return to the moon. A 2.0 run on the moon is in full swing.
It was the first time that humanity was able to see their home from above, their "blue planet". Us earthlings followed the journeys of Bill Anders, Frank Borman, and Jim Lovell, who were the first humans to leave Earth’s orbit on December 21, 1968, and enter the moon’s orbit, circling it. It was astronaut Bill Anders who used his camera to film the rising of the earth above the moon - a role reversal of the celestial bodies, and it was broadcast live on Christmas of that same year. The image of the earth as a lonely, beautiful and - from the perspective of outer space - tiny planet, moved millions of people to tears. This first flight to the moon was the real beginning of the conquest of the moon, our constant companion. Just over half a year later, Neil Armstrong and then Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Their landing on the "Mare Tranquillitatis", the sea of tranquility, was the beginning of a new era in space travel.
A total of six manned NASA missions landed on the moon. Twelve astronauts collected rock samples, carried out scientific experiments and proved with their landings that humans are able to travel to other celestial bodies. In 1972, NASA prematurely ended its lunar program. The scientific benefit did not justify the costs. But the real goal was achieved: with the moon landings, the United States was the uncontested leading space nation. It quieted down though and interest was lost in the Earth’s satellite. Russian and US astronauts limited exploration to space stations orbiting Earth. After the end of the Cold War, this led to the joint construction of the International Space Station ISS, which is occupied by an international team of six astronauts.
But manned spaceflight is in the midst of change. The International Space Station is slowly but surely flying towards the twilight of its existence and space agencies are looking for new destinations with the moon, albeit for different reasons, becoming once again the focus of attention. While the race to the moon in the 1960s was still a part of the Cold War power struggle effort, the rekindled interest is of a purely scientific nature. The moon is being explored, measured and mapped. A permanent research station would be a new outpost of humanity in space. And for investors, the earth's moon is a tempting target, be it for future space tourism or for the promotion of raw materials. Measured in cosmic distances, the moon is relatively easy to reach. Flights there and back take a week. And so the moon would be an ideal location to test new technologies, do scientific research, or use it as a springboard for missions deeper into our solar system.
In this episode of Spacetime, astronaut and scientist Ulrich Walter explains why the moon is suddenly so interesting to mankind. We explore if water exists on the moon and why its discovery would be of such consequence. Professor Walter reveals plans of the privately funded space agencies and how and why a permanent settlement on the moon is a viable possibility. He tells us about the pioneers of the Apollo missions and the first conquest. Professor Walter shows us how the moon could become a stepping stone into deeper space exploration. Many scientists and astronauts see our terrestrial satellite as a starting point to tackle the next great adventure of mankind: Manned journeys to Mars.
About the documentary series SPACETIME
Take a look at the Earth from space: Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Walter has fulfilled the dream of mankind. In 1993 he traveled to Earth orbit. For the science format "Spacetime", the astronaut once again sets off for the universe. In this reportage series, the physicist and professor of space technology presents current space travel trends and pioneering discoveries in space research.
The challenges of the dream call "Astronaut", the new race of the space nations to the moon or the discovery of further Earth-like exoplanets: In this documentary series, Ulrich Walter proves how lifelike science can be and what answers space travel offers to some of the fundamental questions of human existence.

Last time we went to the moon the US payed for a team of Germans aka ex Nazis to build rocket to go to the moon. How about this time around Germany pays for a team of Americans to build a rocket to go to the moon? seams fair. This time around no bombing of London as practice, I would say this last part is key.

In 1960 my father took a job at Vandenberg Air Force Base where he worked for 33 years. At that time America was developing missile systems like Atlas, Thor Titan and other vehicles. The focus at that time was primarily military. The Atlas was the first ICBM. We were launching as many as two missiles a month. Sometimes resulting in some very spectacular explosions. Nothing blew up like an Atlas. Through the sixties focus changed from primarily military to commercial and exploratory launches. In the seventies The M.O.L. or Manned Orbital Laboratory was constructed, Now known as SLC6 or Space Launch Complex Six. It was designed to launch the Saturn 5 vehicle that took us to the moon. Vandenberg would have handled the military missions for NASA. as it still does as well as being a Strategic Air Command base for defensive ICBM's. To witness a launch from the press site was quite a treat, especially a night launch. I saw hundreds of launches. Some ending in disaster but the majority were successful. The MOL was mothballed at the conclusion of the Saturn program, refitted in the mid eighties to launch the Space Shuttle. The Challenger accident ended this in 1986 but in the early nineties after yet another refit SLC6 launched it's first Titan missile. In the seventies I was a member of Squadron 101 of the Civil Air Patrol and toured an ICBM silo one night. The silo was loaded with a Minute Man II ICBM. I reached out and left my fingerprints on this awesome weapon. 'To Russia with love ' I said. Three years ago I witnessed Space-X not only launch a missile but land the booster in a spectacular night launch. The Corona virus has all but halted launches to present time. Vandenberg will resume commercial and military operations soon. You mite say I have space in my blood. It was inspirational growing up with the space program. One day we will launch manned vehicles from here. I am 61. Before I leave Earth I hope to see this myself.

1 spare part costs what 2million to deliver it to the space station in ORBIT ... send that same part to the moon... it now costs 4 million ... the ISS end of life was planned for 2025 ... the point when it's cost of repairs and benefit from research no longer balance out ... currently the iss runs about 30% time on repairs alone ... at 35% they no longer break even they lose money ... at 40% they lose funding ... move the station to the moon you can only afford an 18% repair cycle ... . better option dont deorbit .. reclaim, reprocess and reuse the materials and metals in it to make new bits and build a new station right in orbit ... heck you already have O2 tanks and water and all the rest of the basics ... use them to bootstrap a new station and poof you dont burn the old one up and waste the billions of dollars spent on it ... but reuse them as best as possible ... a solar forge melt down the metals and then turn them into the various sheets girders wires and what not you need use the old communication gear and life support as an emergency backup system in a radiation safe locker so they are absolutely certain to have at least minimal water and air purification available while waiting out troubles.

and when you need to send more than 30% of spare parts for basic upkeep to the moon now instead of just LEO ... you double the cost of those parts ... after 2025 the ISS will be on about a 40% repair cycle ... that means 4 out of 10 things done in a day will just be repair ... now it is just 3 things a day ... the longer the station stays in service the more costly it becomes to keep it working ... the current costs make a 35% repair cycle the max limit for the ISS being a cost efficient program ... and they are almost at that now.

It should be understood but rarely discussed, that there is no "earth-rise" viewed from anywhere on the moon. At any point on the moon where the earth can be viewed it remains in that position and as the non-rotating moon revolves around the earth the earth's surface is seen hemisphere by hemisphere as the moon revolves. If you are viewing earth from the moon's closest point, the earth view remains directly straight overhead, continually. Now you know.

What we need for a mars mission is a carrier ship capable taking several landing craft as well as passengers and supplies. We would also need ready to use habitats as on the moon. Such a carrier would beed to be assembled in orbit. It would not be capable of landing. It would need a rotating section for artificial gravity. We humans cannot adapt to zero gee. This carrier will need to be fairly large but it might be powered by ion engine and rocket thrusters. NASA should encourage this development.
@0623kaboom
@0623kaboom 3 года назад
personally why not just build a torus space station in orbit and set it spinning ... then load it up with supplies and people ... then send that to mars Orbit ... and now you have a station colony that can bootstrap a mars colony and provide local safety help and supply ... this way the station is fully functioning and as bug free as possible before it gets moved to mars ... then build a new on at earth for the asteroids and so on .. then you send station colonies of 10k people each minimum so that each station can bootstrap a new colony anywhere ... and once they can duplicate the station and fill it with people they can carry on exploring further without waiting on earth only to build stations.
