I learnt about Lolita fashion in my early teens around 2013 and was heavily into watching videos and reading about it, however I always felt like I was too heavy for Lolita as a teen. Now at 22 I have started to actually wear the dresses and it feels almost surreal to finally be wearing these clothes I admired for so long

Same thing for me haha. I've always wanted to wear lolita since 2012 or 2013, I've even made sketches of dresses i wanted to make etc. Then of course my parents were like ew no. So i kind of stopped thinking about it. I just got my first couple of dresses this years at 25 and in a way i feel proud of myself, like my younger self would be so happy. And I'm going to digress a bit but the reason i started coming back to lolita is because i started wearing alt fashion, and i realized i was only able to comfortably explore my personal style because my parents are overseas throughout the pandemic. Sorry for the essay i just feel glad there are some people out there with similar experiences and how it's so wholesome to find our own way.

I would go looking for "pretty Japanese dresses" in my Design technology class whenever I was allowed on the computer. Maybe around 2007? Discovered Lolita, and a website which just had pictures of different dresses, all with a red curtain in the background. That's all I remember of the site really. Then I'd use all my break time researching lolita and staring at dresses I thought I'd never have a chance to own. A couple years later my comic book shop stocked the GLB! I remember freaking out and practically crying that we were starting to see these things in the uk. I didn't start wearing the fashion till 11 years later!

Complete lurker to the fashion for YEARS due to my age and weight. I routinely bought the GLB starting in about 2006. My eldest daughter first started wearing Lolita in 2011 and my younger daughter followed her into the fashion. I didn't find things that fit me until roughly 2018 or so. Between the 3 of us, we now have about 30 dresses and skirts.

I found lolita fashion back in the 2009 while googling cute dresses for character design, but due to my parents horrified reaction (I didn't know about a certain book but that is definitely what they were thinking) it was off the table for me to wear. I re-found it and started to wear it in 2020.

i found out about lolita in 2010 when I was a high school freshman after a friend brought a japanese glb to school. I wanted to immediately jump in but said friend dissuaded me by telling me that comms were super judgy and if my coords didn’t match or if i was even a lil off brand they would ridicule me so I stayed away for a LOOOONG time. A few years ago I rediscovered it and I’m only doing it casually, I’ve only got a handful of main pieces and only one pair of shoes, but I love it when I get to wear it c:

I discovered Lolita in 2005. I found out about Malice Mizer and Mana and I liked their outfits, but at first I thought those were just costumes for the shows. Then later I went to some j-rock live concert in Germany and there were some girls (fans) dressed in Lolita fashion - that was the moment I realized YOU CAN WEAR THIS and I fell in love with the fashion completely. I tried to make "kind of" lolita outfit for a meetup with friends one month later, posted the pictures online on my Deviantart, and a fellow lolita contacted me and told me more about this fashion. Then I learned about brands, lolita rules, and joined the community... LOL all I can remember from high school is sitting in the library in front of a computer, admiring pretty lolita brand dresses, and later daydreaming about wearing them on the way home... I was a poor student and I couldn't afford them, so I decided to learn how to sew...

In 2019 I found lolita through a safiya nygaard video where she got a lolita makeover with rinrin doll. I now have been researching lolita and watching as many videos on lolita as I can because I was really fascinated the fist time I found lolita in that video. I have not started wearing lolita but it is my dream to wear the fashion.

I think I "discovered" lolita fashion when I was extremely young...maybe 11 I wanna say? I vaguely remember going up to my mom on her computer to see what she was doing and she was window shopping Gothic lolita, I dont remember the website or anything its a very fuzzy memory, I've also had her vaguely bring it up to me (she didn't know it was like an entire FASHION style even) a number of times in my life like showing me a MM dress and say "oo isn't this so pretty!!" So weirdly enough my 60 year old closeted-goth mom inadvertently introduced me to lolita. I...don't know what she expected from the girl that wore strictly (and I wish I was joking) princess dresses up until I was like 6

I had a book that was just street snaps from 2007, it was framed as a book of J-Rock groupies but it was all sorts of Jfashion from Visual Kei to lolita to Gyaru to Decora. I didn't start wearing lolita until 2012, when I had a friend who would order from bodyline and F+friend for the both of us.

I've discovered lolita fashion in 2007 when I was a huge fan of MALICE MIZER and especially of mana and I discovered gothic lolita through his brand Moi-même Moitié and v shortly after friends of my parents heard about it and offered me a book of street snapshots of people called Gothic & Lolita (released in 2006) and this book changed me forever! what was helpful to know more is that the brands people were wearing were listed ! but I started buying and wearing the style in 2018 because before that the lolitas I got to know weren't welcoming at all and made me understand I "didn't have the attitude" of lolita and that I didn't have the elegance for it (also I had inconsciously the thought that as a non-white - actually mixed- person it wouldn't suit me)...plus there was nowhere where I could buy it and I wasn't buying online at the time...I bought my first coordination in Japan (the Bodyline simple sailor model, idk the actual name of it) that I still love and I'm embarrassed remembering that I wore it during the trip in 45°C and humid summer without socks and proper shoes or anything I hope I wasn't judged for it x__x since then I bought more coordinations online (mainly Taobao brands)...sorry that was a long speech about my life!

I found out about lolita in highschool through anime and Anime Expo. I had a little magazine I got at AX that had H.Naoto clothes and little blurbs that had interviews with alt fashion people. I still have it lol. It wasn't until the pandemic (2020) when I found your videos where it sparked my long lost love for it. Thanks to the resources, access to buying lolita, and the stimulus check for jumpstarting my wardrobe LOL. I found lolita through the GLB's in 2008. I was a teen at the time, & had a few handmade & offbrand coords throughout highschool. I was on livejournal until around 2012. Over the past few years, I kept reminiscing about the way lolita fashion made me feel, but felt like I was too old, too plus size, too poor, etc. At the beginning of this year, i decided to ignore all of that - & it has filled my heart with joy! My wardrobe is slowly growing, & i just repurchased one of my favorite english glb's that i lost - i know my younger self would be so pleased to see me thriving in my petticoat today 💕

I was having a gothic fashion phase when I was 18 and 19, and in 2003 I was doing some research for a report on gothic fashion and came across lolita fashion. I think the first thing I saw was some cheap low quality stuff, and although I was interested didn't fall in love with the style until I saw some btssb items. I immediately jumped into it by ordering a maxipad headdress from ebay (it was horrible quality) and using my almost non existent sewing skills to make bloomers, a skirt, an apron and a petticoat in 2003. It was my ita year. I started buying brand items in 2004 and making at least presentable looking items myself. It took me a while and in 2005 I had a week's worth of outfits. I bought and sold and made a lot of items between 2004 and 2008 as I was learning what I liked. Then I sold most of my wardrobe in 2009 and had to rebuild my wardrobe in 2018 when I wanted to wear it again. In 2005 I was more of a daily lolita, wearing it most days of the week. I now wear it very occasionally.

My first introduction to lolita was also in 2006, in 2014 I started watching lolita content online but didn't have the means to purchase main pieces until until 2019. Sugar fairy cake will forever haunt me because I got it for an absolute bargain back in 2019 and sold it in 2020 because I was moving countries and was leaning more gothic and classic. Now I wear every style and still have regrets selling that piece. Maybe one day it will make its way back into my closet.

I discovered lolita on tumblr around 2012 in my early 20s. I absolutely fell in love with the sailor motifs. I started learning all I could about the fashion and fell hard for classic (I had/have a love for the Victorian era and vintage fashion beforehand, so it makes sense). I wanted to make my own dresses but was always too scared to try. I had read too many stories of girls being called ita for handmade things. Fast forward to 2019: Metamorphose releases a plus size line, I get my first brand dress, …..more dresses follow from there because Meta owns my soul…,and today I am learning to sew my own dresses now that I have been able to study real pieces and not just pictures…..and “ita” is just a word that does not limit me or my imagination. 😁

I found out about lolita in 2008 when I was watching an anime with lolita inspired fashion so I started digging. I didn't start wearing it until 2011/12 mostly because my parents wouldn't let me buy online. But that's when I learned to sew so I made a few pieces. And then was really able to buy stuff starting in 2012 when I was in college and had a job.

I first saw lolita fashion on tumblr around 2011, didn't understand it at all, and ignored it for years. In 2014 I met an amazing friend who was planning to get started in the fashion, and with her better explanation I became OBSESSED. I started off with some cute bodyline pieces in 2015. Due to the waning interest in sweet (especially in black) at that time, I was able to pick up AP prints like Milky Planet for incredibly good prices. Now I finally have the courage to alter my brand. I'm starting out by making them all into skirts that fit me comfortably. I'll be making the bodices into pinafore tops that can be re-attached with buttons. I'll be making suspenders and aprons to go with them as well, plus blouses. I'm so excited to be able to wear my lolita prints I love comfortably and in a unique new way! Started wearing the fashion at 25, still going strong at 32!

I was first exposed to lolita fashion in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s because of Mana. I started to wear the fashion around ‘02/‘03. I was still in high school at that time so I was mainly sewing my own dresses using the patterns from the Gosurori and GLB mags but after I started working and earning my own money I started purchasing brand pieces when I could. I wore the fashion for a very long time but left for a few years after life started to get really hard and I felt like I didn’t enjoy it anymore but I returned a couple years ago. I often feel really lost because the fashion has changed so much. I think this video made me realize that for myself I think I still really cling to that older simpler style you showed in that first GLB even though I really enjoy seeing the newer styles on others. I guess maybe I should consider myself old school style and just start looking for older prints because that feels so much more comfortable than trying to figure out how to accessorize and style the way that is common now. I always feel intimidated my the sheer amount of accessories that seem to be expected although I really enjoy seeing it on other people. Thank you for showing these… they really have me feeling nostalgic for those days!

I first learned about/got into lolita in the early 00s and much like you was uh... lolita at heart/Doing My Best (tm). I got my first piece of brand in 2009 at either AX or PMX, it's a Victorian Maiden skirt that is made from green couch fabric and is really difficult to coord but I still love it and will probs never get rid of it. Was mostly Handmade but added some more brand and also Bodyline in the 2010-2019 range. Then I changed careers and have disposable income and can wear ANYTHING while working now so I'm slowly replacing the majority of my closet with lolita and j-fashion lmao. All the people worried about aging out of lolita meanwhile I didn't go hard on the j-fashion til my 30s. But it's so fun looking at Old School stuff! And thanks for linking to that archive of GLBs!! I can now indulge my nostalgia.

I was technically first exposed to lolita fashion through anime back in the early 2000's, but I didn't really have the money for it at the time -- or have enough knowledge about the subject to pursue it as a hobby. In 2018, I started looking around for a dress for an unrelated party, and I somehow remembered lolita fashion. I went from casually looking around, to actively researching the hobby and rules for about a month. I bought my first main piece that summer and the rest is history. As of 2022, my wardrobe is massive and focuses on a mix of sweet and classic.

I've been meaning to watch this and finally got around to it. I became interested in the fashion sometime in the 2004-2007ish time frame. My friend was really into drawing manga/anime and just everything Japanese and was a super weeb. She started buying Gothic and Lolita Bibles to use as references for her drawings and I would sometimes look at them with her, but I never thought they were something I could wear. When I started college in 2011 I met a girl who wore lolita, she was into more punk and goth and she had gotten into the fashion because her bf had friends and ex gfs who were in the fashion at a neighboring university. She and her boyfriend showed me pics of their friends in the local community, told me about conventions, showed me and told me about bodyline and talked about "brand" and that if I joined the fashion maybe one day I would get to have "brand", and how most of the girls in the local community barely had any brand and the ones that did mostly got it on school foreign exchange trips and even then only the richest of them had. I decided then I wanted to become a lolita. I did research, I sat on the bodyline website constantly deciding the items for my likely only lolita coord. I still remembering not actually buying anything until 2013, because I lived at home and knew my parents would be mad at me spending so much money on frilly dresses from overseas, especially because the only online shopping in our home was off of amazon and that was for my school books, and they thought me buying sandwiches from subway while I was at school was too expensive. When I started dating my now husband in 2013 he encouraged me to get involved in lolita, and kindly paid for and let me ship everything to his house so my parents wouldn't get upset and I would pay him back by paying for our dates. I still remember my first bodyline coord, I didn't have a proper headbow and my petticoat did basically nothing but I was hooked. I actually got a few more bodyline dresses and foundation pieces and ended up ordering a nicer petticoat and even got my first brand piece which was a Lyrical Bunny pochette new with tag from a very overpriced reseller. I soon started buying secondhand brand off of the egl live journal and was wearing nearly head to toe brand by the start of 2014. I was active in the fashion until around 2016-2017. Real life stuff and wedding planning plus weight gain made wearing the fashion really hard and most of my local comm had/has moved on. I still have most of my pieces though some went missing during a move which is heart breaking. I hope maybe one day to get back into it but until then I still follow some facebooks and instagrams and watch your videos.

I came to know about lolita because I watched a Chinese survival show in lockdown 2020 that I found out about through Kpop and on the show my favourite contestant was called Xie Anran and she was a student who worked as a lolita model for taobao brands (you guys might’ve seen her and just not known her name lol) and she uses the money to buy her own lolita and she wore it throughout the show. I thought she looked awesome and I wished I could dress like her so I immediately got into j-fashion and bought a lolita dress which was more like a period costume, down to my feet with no petticoat potential but still cute. I did more research and I kept buying and now I’m nearly at 20 dresses!

I discovered the fashion in 2017 when I was about 12 years old. Which I think was at the tail end of the western sweet boom and the start of the old school revival. Having discovered decora just a few months before I was really drawn to OTT sweet. I went to my first meet in 2019. When I was 15 I started wearing the fashion to school on an almost daily biases because only half the student population was in the building, so I figured why not. Now I'm 17 and I've developed a more classic influenced style and am grateful I found the fashion as it has really helped me reclaim my femininity. Now that I'm older, I'm planning on making myself more known in the community.

I remember my school having like a Shojo Beat and there was a baby the stars shine bright ad in the back! Sadly, I did not quite understand how to order any lolita because I was quite young and now that I’m plus sized, I am not quite in the community but I still adore seeing everyone’s coords and I follow a ton of lolita creators! I know there are many options now for plus sized lolitas but as an adult I don’t really have the money to spend on clothes I won’t wear too often. I do hope to get a full coord together for a con this year!

I also learned about lolita fashion in 2006. It was a time when there was a significant anime-jrock-jfashion boom in my country and since it was all new at the time, a lot of teen magazines as well as newspapers would write articles about it. Sometimes they'd interview lolitas, and that was how i got initially interested. However i had no chance to wear lolita in a while because i was a younger teen at the time and my parents really weren't keen to spend money on alternative clothing, so i gravitated towards a more emo aesthetic because that was achievable. It was only years later when I was 18-19, got my first job and could do my own online shopping that I was able to buy some lolita items and wore it briefly but then my interest died down for a while. Now in my late 20s I've figured out my personal style in general and in the last two years I've returned to wearing lolita occasionally :)

I discovered lolita around 2012-2014, but as a teenager I couldn't order stuff online so I stuck to emo & scene clothes from the mall. I got back into it in 2019 or 2020, and your videos definitely helped with that! I only have Honey Cake, and I still need to find some shoes I like for it. I love these magazines, so much cool stuff

I can't recall where i found out about Lolita fashion, but I can say that Kyary Pamyu Pamyu really did inspire me to pursue lolita fashion, despite not being a lolita herself :> Then someone I know in a fandom im in pretty much encouraged me to get into lolita and kind of became my mentor in a sense, showing me neat tips and tricks on lolita as well since she was in the fashion far, far longer than I was and saw I had potential. Soon enough, I pretty much bought my first dream dress and some other things with my first paycheck from my first job (AP's eternal carnival) but it turns out its a tight fit due to the weird measurments on one of the cuts ;v; (I did actually find the special cut that fits me so much better just recently and it was also in the same colorway as the other cut too!) However, I was a bit hesitant on going to meets as I was afraid of ableism due to being autistic and also having hella anxiety too, but it just turns out the people in my local comm just happen to be some of the most awesome people ever 🥺 And now I have made my mark on the community locally and abroad!!! Courtney if ur reading this thank you so much for teaching me the Frilly Ways 💕

I learned about Lolita fashion in my teens, when I was about 13 or so. I am 22 now and a college student, never have had the money to afford dresses unfortunately, and my parents have always judged me and told me that nobody dresses like that in the small city we live in. However I own the Angelic Pretty Marie replica which I bought once thanks to a part-time job and I hope to finally wear it someday. GBL is so pretty and I am hoping to buy some of the volumes second-hand too, as well as more dresses in the future

I found out about Lolita in 2005 when randomly looking for vivienne westwood necklaces. I was really into visual-kei and somehow got on Rakuten. In 2009 I went to a store in The Netherlands that sold lolita and bought my first brand piece, a Meta cutsaw. I don't really wear the fashion anymore for a number of reasons.

A Fruits magazine in 2003. There was a Japanese pop culture exhibit at an art museum. I went with my college anime club. I kinda loosely followed lolita and J-fashion (I remember Pastel Al A Mode being released) for a pretty long time. I was more into cosplay. I couldn't afford lolita, there weren't many plus sized options back then aside from DIY. Plus, I wasn't making a lot of money so I stuck to cosplay as my one "expensive hobby". Around 2010-2011, I started getting burnt out on cosplay and started getting interested in J-fashion. I was more into Fairy Kei but I kept seeing prints like Milky Planet, Sugary Carnival and other iconic AP OTT sweet prints. I finally started wearing it in 2012. By then, I could actually afford it.

I first learned about lolita fashion probably somewhere between 1995 and 1999. I'm guessing because it was a long time ago but I know I was young and I started following the fashion because it was Mana-sama's style who was my favorite in the Malice Mizer band (who I learned about when Gackt and Kami were still in the band). But it wasn't until last year, 2022, that I started actually wearing it. Biiiiiiig stretch of time.

I discovered lolita fashion in early 2008 and by that summer I bought my first dress from eBay. lol And it was honesty not a bad dress. I'd wear it still if it fit and I had the right pettie for it. I had a couple of bad purchases after that but I did more research and join online comms and figured things out. I was also making a lot of my own dresses and the first jsk I made still brings a smile to my face even though it's a monstrosity.😅

Hi Lor, from 🇬🇧. I incidentally discovered J fashion when I was 11 through Gwen stefani and I still love her music to this day. Doing more research on Google I found out about lolita, purely through photos. I didn't know about the rules or that there were specific brands for lolita fashion such as BTSSB and AP until I found ur videos in 2020, it really got me through. When I discovered malice mizer after befriending Kanon wakeshima I got to know about Mana. Doing more research I found out about MMM. I fell I love woth thr short Nun OP and bought it as a one off cos it was so expensive. I thought I wouldn't need accessories and I'd wear it to events. But the quality was fantastic I was really impressed. I bought a Summer Catherine as they're Wembley daily. It's gotten quite addictive but it's a hobby that makes me feel good. I even made videos on my purchases cos I want to show off MMM proudly. I even got handbags and their recently released shoes. After binge watching your videos and catching up since I was inspired to take thr plunge and go for it. I love your just do it attitude. It gave me a lot of confidence to join lolita.

I found lolita fashion around 2009 and just stared at pictures for hours dreaming of maybe one day actually owning something like it. I remember scrolling through Mary Magdalene's website and drooling over everything. Because I couldn't afford anything and didn't know anyone else who was interested in it, I didn't even know you could buy it second hand online. I just wanted to practice sewing so that I might be able to make myself some stuff, cheaper. I did make a few skirts but I had no petticoat and it was rather ita. xD I finally got my first dress through Lace Market around 2018 or so and have been slowly adding in pieces. I don't get to wear it much, but it's always made me feel like I can actually be pretty so that's a big reason I love it and wear other jfashions (mori, otome, larme).

My start in lolita is similar to yours. Found it in Boarders bookstore in 2006 when I use to spend HOURS just reading manga there and then started wearing it in 2012 when I had my own money to spend on things. I have a few of the early GLBs as well that are always fun to flip through but I am so humored that the first thing you turned too in the 2012 book is a dress I have from Frill and that im obsessed with

I think I first started getting into lolita fashion in the mid 2000s? I recognize the Meta skirt with the big logo across it as something I would look at on their site all the time. My favorite brand was Mary Magdalene, but I looked at Meta's stuff a ton because their page had English so I could understand what I was looking at better. Got my first dress several years ago, but much more recently...2018 maybe? 2017? Somewhere around there. Just pre-ordered my third dress! My second dress ended up being too small so it's been sitting in my closet because I've been hoping I might be able to get it altered to fit a bit better (gaps just a bit with the buttons in the front). I mostly dress pretty casually in my every day life so it's been hard for me to justify spending the money... But when I DO wear lolita it makes me really happy, so I've been trying to get over my nerves!

I first discovered lolita (gothic lolita specifically) when I was a preteen in the late 2000's due to my interest in BJDs at the time. I looked more into the style and fell in love but I had absolutely no money and no idea where to really get it. Eventually my interest kind of went away but I would still see it sometimes at anime cons/on Tumblr later/etc. Then I fell back in love with it during late 2019/early 2020 and started collecting pieces in late 2020. I found lolita around 2010 I think? It's hard to remember the exact date, but I was super in to anime and Japan at the time, and I've always been interested in alternative fashion, so it was only a matter of time really before I found it. I didn't start actually wearing it until 2014, but I did wear a few things up before then that I thought were lolita but they definitely weren't. Now I've not really worn it much since the pandemic started, honestly the lack of meet ups made me lose interest in the fashion. It still holds a close place in my heart though, this was a very nostalgic video for me

I first found Lolita fashion in what must've been 2002 or 2003 when a German manga magazine printed a report on the fashion and community spanning multiple pages. I wish I still had that magazine, I'm so curious what it would read like today. Starting from 2006, when the internet became more accessible to me, I started window shopping on Baby's website but it took me another three years until I was lucky enough to fly to Japan and try on my first Innocent World dress in a store. I never wanted to buy anything before I was able to try it on and see if it actually fits me. Luckily, that resulted in me putting lots of effort into research before I bought anything so I avoided an ita phase.

I don't wear Lolita but I really enjoy the fashion and I first came across it as an early teen in 2006 with the character Ninon Beart from the video game King of Fighters 2006. The character dressed in Gothic Lolita and I was in love with her look. Of course at the time I didn't know what it was actually called until about a year or two later when I looked up info about her and came across the term "Gothic Lolita". But my search kinda stopped there and it wasn't until about 2008/2009 when a friend introduced me to the band Malice Mizer and exposed me to Mana-Sama and even though I had somewhat of an idea of what Lolita was, I was very intrigued seeing someone in real life wearing and I decided to research and look more into it and it was through there thatI learned that it was a full-on fashion-based scene started in Japan and how there were many other styles of Lolita aside from Gothic Lolita granted Gothic is still my most favorite but it was still cool to learn that there were tons of other styles within the style. Needless to say, as I mentioned prior I don't wear the style but I still adore it and think it's cool that there are people still into it even today. :)
