I remember the swobbing of the bikes on the Italy tour... it was bizarre. Might do the Spain/Portugal tour next year.

Great vid. Just some info, the vehicles are swabbed with the same swab to save time. Only If there is a positive result will they then go over each vehicle with different ones. Ride safe.

I think the ferry company base the ferry fare for bikes on the alternative method of travelling, ferry to France, petrol, tolls, accommodation and meals rather than the true cost of transporting a bike and rider to Spain on the ferry. Presume everyone is subsidising the half empty ferries out of season. I wonder how the fares compare with Irish ferry routes to Northern France, 20 hours on the ferry? It’s also very expensive taking a ferry with bike from Netherlands to Oslo.

Totally agree, just returned on the pont aven, all your points are dead on, on the return lift not working, climbed 5 floors with all the gear, me due for a knee replacement soon, either my knee would collapse or a heart attack, whichever came first, what a nightmare. Saw a couple of chaps with maggellan t shirts, maybe the same trip.

Toby. Could not agree with you more re the Pont Aven. My wife and I went to the Picos in September. We were stuck in the hold at `Santander for 1.5hrs as a car had broken down on the ramp above us!! We were both put into the end of the deck and it was a pain getting two bikes out without tripping over the wires on the deck.

Interesting conversation, thanks. I recently took the Condor fast ferry to Cherbourg then the Bilbao to Portsmouth ferry back. Loved the whole experience. It was so much more relaxing than riding back up to Calais, as we usually do in the car. The £500 cost of the Spain to UK leg smarts a bit though...

Picos has fallen out of my plans due to ferry costs even before hearing about the issues on one of the ships. What a shame that common sense solutions as you suggest are very unlikely to be acted on.

Sorry, already in France, so nothing (good or bad) to say about ferries or tunnel 😉 Had a nice Route des Grandes Alpes last summer, going from South to North this time, with our son. As you guys said, just great being back on tour 👍

Totally agree ferry was a nightmare both going and coming from Spain 🇪🇸 2 trips this year held us a very long time out of santander at 6 did not give long to get somewhere to stay in Spain. Solo to Morocco 🇲🇦 was amazing ferry and customs were great no troubles easy border 😀.

I love the pont Aven but as you say it really is a shit show when ya get off the ferry, we landed 27th sept this year and I’ve never seen a queue like it! But as you say, the Galicia is a different kettle of fish, BUT… Pont Aven is still a nicer boat in my opinion

The fun of touring. Departing Morocco all the bikes are put onto a ramp then the mobile HGV ! vehicle scanner does a pass over them. Go figure 🙄

It’s hard I know… Toby will be doing the Picos and Grand Tour of Spain, I’m doing the Pyrenees twice next year. Ride safe and come with us you will love it!

Menu del Dia is great value. Did Nordkapp this summer. Totally stunning but £11 for a beer and min £20 for 2 courses🤯 But would go back tomorrow!
