There are hundreds of makes and models of tenkara fishing rods on the market today. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert at using all of them! In this video overview, I present the five rods that I've been using over the past few years for most of my backcountry tenkara fishing. They include four models from Tenkara USA (including the new Satoki) and one model from Tenryu - the TF39TA - that remains the staple of my kit. In addition, I'll walk through the basic gear I use and take while tenkara fishing on hiking and backpacking trips.

Hi. This is the first video of yours that I have seen. Several years ago I bought a Tenkara rod and things that I thought I would need to use it on backpacking trips, but it is all sitting in my gun safe unused because my backpacking buddy...my German Shepherd...got too old to go out with me so I stayed with him. He passed away this last year and I had all but forgotten the Tenkara rod until I saw your video. I'm in Northern California...and NOW I need to dig it out of the safe and see what I actually have! Thank you for the "tools and accessories" section or your video! I will refer back to it once I know what I have! You have rekindled the desire in me to get out and give this whole thing a whirl, and for that I Thank You! Keep the videos coming, and happy outfoor times to you!

Awesome Vlog, great selection of Tenkara USA rods that started it all in North America. I have used a lot of Tenkara gear, for backpacking and the minimalist Tenkara USA has it all figured out.. they make great quality stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Another fantastic video! Great tip on the tire tube. I fish with the Nissin Pocket Mini V3 300 rod is in Sierras, along with Tenkara USA gear. The Tenkara USA Satoki is now on my next pick for alpine lakes.

Thanks for another solid video; as usual, lots of good info presented in a very relaxing format. …plus we get to watch a sleepy pup. :)

Ryan, Great video. As a part time backpacker and an avid fly fisherman this really appeals to me. I do have one question though, from what I've seen of Tenkara fishing the catch is usually 3-5 smaller fish. I see you don't mention anything about a creel or stringer, so what do you do with the fish you've caught when you're not done fishing in your minimalist setup? Or do you catch and release until you get your one and done fish?

I have a satoki, its my first ever rod for anything fly fishing related. So idk if I can give the best advice since I don't really have anything to compare it to. But I'd say it performs great. I'm currently located in Charleston, SC so have really only been able to take it pond fishing but I caught 5 bream in about 30-40 minutes on a pond near where I live. I missed about 3 or 4 since I still don't really know what I'm doing lol. I think the satoki may be a bit longer than what I would prefer taking in a pack, but definitely not unreasonable. I like having the ability to mess with 3 different lengths a lot, but can't see myself using the longest setting in a smaller stream.
