It’s just mind boggling how many rods that you own , it’s good to have videos on different types of rod and how they’re used for people just starting out with Tenkara .

Well, I sold all my Japanese rods but one, the Kita 330 which is a light fun rod with non-weighted flies and moderate fish. I look at them more as tools, and with the availability of spare parts not being easy if not impossible, and expensive I decided to sell. I'm more than happy with what the US based companies have been offering, they really stepped up their game. I'll reply about them after your next video.

Glad to see you include the Tenkarabum Traveller. The Traveller series gets little attention but are great rods. I have the 27 and 44 and they are my go to rods. I mean to have a 3.6, 4.0 and 4.4 length rod that packs down to less than 22" and incredibly light and fishes well in all lengths.

Thanks Torrey. I agree, they are great rods! Extremely light and versatile. The 27 and 39 are special to me and two of the earliest Japanese rods that I bought. They don’t have the fanfare that some rods have, but those that own them understand how wonderful they are to fish.

I learned a lot about the different Japanese rods from this, thanks. Preparing for my 2nd season doing Tenkara with a new rod or two. Local store (I live in Japan) has the Daiwa X45 (4.5m, 122g) Daiwa Expert LT33 (LL33 also avail) (3.3m, 73g) 10% off. Not looking for advice, just wondering if you've any experience using either, have thoughts on their respective characteristics? Cheers

Sorry Dennis, I don’t have first hand experience with either of those. I’ve read and heard great things about the expert LT 33. Daiwa makes some fantastic rods!

One of my favorites lately is the daiwa kiyose 43 keiryu rod. Only 3.1 ounces, zooms from 3.8m to 4.3m, well balanced 7:3 tip flex. Great for small streamers, drop shotting, nymphing, and casts unweighted flies on a 3.5 level line like a dream. Very versatile rod .

@@tenkaraonthetrail, with the Portal and players opting out of bowl games I quit watching college football. More time found for fishing.

The Air Stage Hakubai is my favorite for small brookies. I've got the "stiff" 290 but even that length can be a bit long for some of the brushiest streams I fish, so I ordered the 240 grip section from Tenkara-ya to help with that. It's a shame Nissin discontinued them. I saw Suntech's site lists a new "Kurenai II AR" on their site. I'm wondering if it's meant to replace the old Kurenai. I've got you and Tom Davis to blame for the fact that I now own 3 of the Air Stage Fujiryu - 330 and 360 in 5:5, and the 360 6:4 for nymphing. I've used my Oni III a lot more, and brought it on some incredible trips so I also have a sentimental attachment to it, but the 330 5:5 Fujiryu is amazing. For my next rod, I want something to tackle landlocked Atlantic salmon and "trophy" browns. Maybe the Gamakatsu.

Hi Kris, Great video and thanks for taking the time to present it. Have searched all over for a Daiwa Master Tenkara ll l36 Rod. Has it been discontinued in favor of the Expert Model?

The Master L LL36 has been discontinued and is not available anywhere. There are a couple Japanese sites that have the Master L LT36. It, too, has been discontinued but hasn't completely sold out.
