Where to stop the Backerboard (Hardiebacker/Durock/Kerdi Board) in the shower and start the drywall. Tile shower walls need to be waterproofed and drywall is not recommended in shower. So the backerboard needs to be stopped at some point and there needs to be a transition to drywall for the remainder of the bathroom walls that won't be tiled.

Thank you very much for posting quality content like this. I have my own general remodeling/handyman company and am fairly new to the industry. Your attention to detail and the pride you clearly have in the quality of work you perform is a welcomed experience in this line of work. I am currently installing a tile surround with a shower tray at my folks house for the first time to help them out with the pan height going from a tub to a shower as they are in their mid 70's, videos like yours are invaluable. Thanks again for your positive attitude and for sharing your knowledge, information, and experience. 👍👍

I also run my tile out minimum of 3" beyond the edge of the tub of shower base. I helps keep the corners between the shower base and tile as well as the transition between the base and the wall dryer as those spots are typically the spots that get wet and start to rot first.

Now this is great content! @ 1:00 mark Isaak is bang on right. Some jobs i go to no timber at this position and sometimes the backer board goes outside of the shower area or the drywall goes into the shower! With no timber joining the two. Unbelievable. I wish I would have known about the tape trick before I did my bathroom. I have some spots where I went over too far with the water proofing and you can see it under the paint. Now I know for the future! I am going to build a new house in about a year and will definitely be using that for a nice edge transition. Also the turned 2 by for blocking! So much more space for screws! 3.5" vs 1.5" wish I would have known that also at the time. Thanks for all the great information!!!

Waterproofing has no strength, just a rubber like coating.
@toph2o676
@toph2o676 2 года назад
@@als1023 I'm sorry man but I don't agree with you at all. Waterproofing has two functions waterproofing and crack isolation. When going over cracks in concrete or cold relief joints you need to use crack isolation membrane. If you use straight thinset they will crack through your tiles, but if you use a crack isolation membrane the concrete or movement in the walls or floors has no effect on the tile. So what you're saying makes no sense at all

I don't know if there are any videos that answer my situation. I have two showers that are back to back then the one side of both showers are up against the wall to the kitchen then the dinning room. The studs on both showers are dry rotted. So do I have to remove the sheet rock in the dining and kitchen to replace the studs? Probably have to do the sill as well.

Backer board is much more difficult and unnecessary, in my opinion, but you be you.
@shmerd1
@shmerd1 2 года назад
Also, I've torn out plenty of moldy backer board. It performs horribly when exposed to moisture. Sucks up water, gets all crumbly, and makes a great environment for black mold. If I could post pictures here, I have plenty. This is where the modern method of applying the vapor barrier to the installation surface shines. I don't even do morter beads anymore. They're just a trap for moisture. I'm hopeful I don't have to replace any of my shower pans. As far as I could tell in the video, he didn't preslope the niche cavity or the curb. Personally, think it's a good idea to preslope all horizontal surfaces.

@shmerd1
@shmerd1 2 года назад
@@pkjr216 I've become less of a fan of Redguard for the same reasons Issac doesn't like it. The 1/2 Hardi precoated with Redguard has the same problem Redguard itself has. It changes color when water sits on it. Both Issac and I agree that this suggest it's changing the properties of the product. If you're using it in an application that completely dries out it's probably fine, but in an application where it stays wet, I don't trust it. In one circumstance I coated the Redguard with an oil based rustolium waterproofing paint. I like the oil better. It beads the water and does not penitrate the surface. I won't use Redguard on shower floors anymore. I did a couple years ago and haven't had any call backs, but I'll only use it on walls now, and for that, I believe it's fine.

I noticed that you installed the alkali-resrstant mesh tape on the joints without putting the modified thinset mortar on the perma base first, is there a reason for this? I ask because perma base says to put the modified thinset mortar on the perma base first then embed the alkali-resrstant mesh tape then apply the modified thinset mortar over that.

I think it would be helpful if you explained one of the most frustrating things for the average tile guy (who watches your video and buys most of his materials from big box stores) is the "Nominal sizing" of tile backer board. Unless you know what you're doing, buying a 1/2" backer board will get you only a 3/8" thick product. That will NOT mate up well with 1/2" drywall. In this video, yours seems to mate just fine, so either you're using actual 1/2" backer board or 3/8" drywall.... Unless you really know about this, you can get into a bunch of problems when tiling from backer board to drywall on ONE PLANE. The best approach is to make sure you purchase ACTUAL 1/2" thick backer board for the surfaces that must meet up with 1/2" drywall. I've not found box stores in my area carrying actual sizes. I can only get it at pro suppliers....where you may be buying yours......but, your videos are for non-pros. The time to know this is BEFORE you get to the job with a load of materials that will cause you a headache.

I've worked as a drywall finisher for nearly 7 years now and am finishing up my studies to become licensed in my state. From my experience: I have seen builders use just the mold resistant drywall above and proceed to paper tape and finish it with regular joint compound (referring to the corners/angles where walls meets ceiling). Although I haven't seen the next phase in person. My best guess would be that the tile guys would then proceed and seal it up to the wall part of the angle.
