Sorry but after some nasty messages, comments are now disabled for this video. This is the first video I have had to do that too. Enjoy the video everyone and get out there and fish!
Over Labor Day weekend, Monica, David, Bill, and I backpacked into the 20 Lakes Basin above Saddlebag Lake. We spent 3 days and 2 nights back there exploring the area. We caught a lot of brook trout and even got into the elusive Golden Trout!
Along the 20 lakes basin loop you have great views of Mt. Conness, the Conness Glacier, and North Peak. There is also an option to go down into Lundy Lake if you'd like.
Some of the lakes we passed by were Saddlebag Lake, Greenstone Lake, Wasco Lake, Cascade Lakes, Steelhead Lake, Lake Helen, Hummingbird Lake, Odell Lake, & Shamrock Lake. We used Shamrock Lake as our base camp for this trip.

I so remember fishing the High Sierra in 72 and catching as many trout as you could wish. Every other day I would keep a couple to eat. Fried in bacon grease as I carried a small slab of bacon.LOL I miss those days and want to thank you for bringing it back to me with your video.

We froze the meats and kept them in a smaller softsided lunch size cooler. We were lucky that we found some snow in some spots to use as ice as well.

Neat to see Hummingbird lake. 22 years ago I bought a book on fishing the sierra and it had Hummingbird as #1 as most scenic and most action. Can't believe no Huell impressions on this one.. His Conness glacier episode was a classic.

A lot of stunted fish. They look like fish from June before the mosquitos hatched. Maybe it's been years since I lived and backpacked in CA. Idaho, Wyoming and Montana has fatter fish. The Wind River Range is just incredible for Golden's and Cutthroat. More variety of inverts keeps them gorging all summer. Thanks for the upload. I will have to look up Saddleback Lake, I forgot or never knew of it. Maybe it is farther north of Mammoth Lakes where I only traveled once. But Inyo NF sounds south if I remember right.
@HuckOutdoors
@HuckOutdoors 6 лет назад
The wind river range is on my go to list! Hopefully in the next couple of years! Saddlebag is north of Mammoth on the way into Yosemite.

@BigDukeX
@BigDukeX 3 года назад
@@bigd27z you will need to secure an OVERNIGHT backpacking permit... if you actually plan to camp over-night in this area. You do not need a permit to simply day hike into this area. You should be aware that with the new restrictions currently in place in Yosemite (2021), this sector is getting hit much harder now, so plan on this for the entire season. Camping is available (first come/first served), google.., Saddlebag Lake Campground for driving directions. The campground is just (100 yards) above the parking lot there at the lake. Finding a suitable campsite beyond Saddlebag Lake this year could prove to be difficult due to a lot of campers and backpackers not being able to enter the park as usual. You are not allowed to dry camp in the immediate area until you reach the far backside of Saddlebag Lake. The trailhead starts out and the entire area is above 10,000 feet. It’s best to acclimate somewhere at a lower elevation first in order to avoid altitude sickness up there. Trust me, it’s real and it WILL impact your day if you have not prepared.The entire loop shown here on the video is just under 9 miles, total. Most can complete the loop in about 5 to 6 hours. You can also hike up to Conness Pike (12,589 feet) to get a 360 degree view of the entire country side. This is an awesome area!!! Plan for inclement weather (Thunder, Lighting, 60 mph winds and heavy rain). This area is exposed with almost no canopy for cover if needed. Also be advised that there are NO improvised campfires allowed anywhere up there (CA State Law).., you’re above 10,000+ feet for the duration of your hike/camp out. Get out there!!!

@@BigDukeX Great info, we drove out to saddlebag Lake trail head parking lot about two weeks ago(Live near Tahoe) The road is clear and the snow is melting fast, I am an avid hiker (Pct thru 2019) but been looking for a place that has a lot to offer but not strenuous to take some family and friends to introduce them in to backpacking, this looks like the perfect spot, really appreciate your video and your helpful information, thank you very much

Jason Fennell ya they tented up on some mean ass rocks. Ask me why and i could never answer that question. After watching this video i ask myself so many whys. But my main why with most camping videos is why do they show nothing of late night campfire life. Especially her cooking. This video was ruined because of those 2 reasons.

Bryan Francis so what it never stopped me just keep it small and safe. You might disagree and want to argue but it is what it is. A small fire near a lakeshore with a resposible outdoorsman is no problem in my eyes. No need for a reply as i already know what your gonna say. Nice video none the less.🐟🐟🐟🚒🚒🚒🙂🙂🙂🔥🔥🔥
