Backpacking Piru Creek Wild & Scenic River

In the hills north of Los Angeles, California, USA, is a wild and scenic river perfect for backpacking. Park at Frenchman’s Flats Day Use Area on the Golden State Hwy Old Rd. It’s only 20 minutes from my home in Valencia. An Adventure Pass is required. From the parking lot, the area looks desolate, devoid of trees and water. You would never guess that a continuously flowing creek is nearby. Rock formations and faults along the creek are unique, providing habitat for endangered and threatened species. The creek is one of two streams in the Angeles National Forest managed for catch and release of wild trout.
I enjoy hiking from the Frenchman's Flats to Lake Lake Piru, a 19.3 mile point-to point trail using the All Trails app on my phone (www.alltrails.com). I could walk in the creek, but it is much easier to follow the trail. I often stop along the trail to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. For me, hiking is about the journey not the destination.

Thanks for the memories. Used to party, camp and hike there back in the 80s, but never did the full hike to Lake piru. Hope your car wasn't broken into, that's the only problem doing a hike like that.

I have made that hike before when we lived in Santa Clarita, and it's a beuatiful journey! You just have to watch out for the Black bears. Watching this video brought back some good memories of me taking my sons out to teach them about survival skills.

Thank you so much for these videos! I've been following you for several years now, and they're always so uplifting and inspiring! This saturday (If the weather is ok), I'll finally try something I've been hesitant about: Doing an overnighter all on my own! I'm not planning on getting much sleep (unfamilliar noices, not used to sleeping in a hammock, etc), but seeing your cheerful demeanor and tight connection to nature inspires me! Thank you again for sharing your passion! :)

Beautiful commentary about the experiences of our childhood days . I grew up in the North Eastern Himalayas and I totally relate to it. I'm an absolute outdoor enthusiast . Kenny's adventurous spirit is inspiring, I'm getting on in years and recovering from surgery but I'm motivated to get back on the Trail. I hiked the Piru stream, 5 miles in from the North with my nephew several years ago , it's a jungle out there. Thank you for awakening that lovely memory.

@KennethKramm
@KennethKramm 2 года назад
Yes, I learned what you suggest when I was a Boy Scout 70 years ago. It works ; however it is no longer considered a good practice because of increasing erosion, in heavily used areas. Also tents were made from canvas; no longer.. now days most everything is made from plastic zz which is more damage than traditional methods. Did you know all animals and plants now contain small particles of plastic. Even rocks that are forming today contain plastic. Much more damaging than traditional camping methods

@@katelee670 I am familiar with many places that are remote... mostly in the desert .
