Backpacks and Handcarts: How did medieval people carry goods on foot?

In this video I show you some of the ways I like to carry my gear on foot when reenacting, compared to how it would have been handled then. Of course, carrying gear in the Middle Ages was a bit of an odd situation. Either you carried almost nothing because you knew you could get what you needed at your destination, or you carried an entire baggage train full of food and equipment. I've opted to show you both options here, and how our reenactment company has tackled it. Of course, not having horses is a severe bottleneck!
Our reenactment company, the Black-and-Gold Lance, is planning on an overland "medieval backpacking trip", with armor and weapons later this summer, which is why I made this handcart and these packs. I will make a detailed video about our trip when it happens, and I'm super excited to share it with you!

there is a part of me that's gotta laugh at the idea of putting a handcart in a car to transport it

Medieval requirement: "so it could fit in my car..."

awesome cart. I tried making one with solid wheels but I couldn't get the right fit on my axels and wheels so they were too wobbly. I like that you made yours collapsible. I might try making one again.

Years ago I built a hand cart for our use at Camlann Medieval Village here in Washington. I used four 6"×6"×1/4" steel plates with a 3/4" I.D. inner diameter bronze bushing at the center of each plate. The plates were bolted to the center of the solid wheels I built. The wheels came off and and handle was folded back for easy transport to the site.

Upgrde from hand cart to horse cart you are missing few steps there are also mules and oxen very popular in medieval times for carts, goats and sheeps had been used to pull small carts too. for heavy loads bulls!

Great work! My friend. I’d like to make this cart for a scene in a movie I’ll be making and of corse I’ll credit you to. Do you think you could make dimensions of this project cart?
@Ralchire

Awesome! Most of the details are on the screen during the cart assembly timelapse. The footprint of the cart is 3 feet by 8 feet, with the axle being 3 feet wide and the bed of the cart being 2 feet by 4 feet. The wheels are 30 inches in diameter. The main arms are 2 inches by 3 inches by 8 feet long.

The real question is, where can we see this movie you're making? =D

@@WarGamerGirl it’s in planning stages and it’s going to be a short film. A lot of research and prop searching things will have to be hand made.

Just search YT for Ötzi the Iceman’s pack frame, or for the Roycraft frame.
