Thankyou got your advice and for watching. We did think this may be the case! Oh dear all this hen husbandry is very fraught sometimes. Eric has our favourite plot on our site! Tilly❤
Hi thank you I use grit for the egg shells watered down apple cider vinegar for cleaning poultry spice for moult and chuck corn in shed at night to encourage them to go in shed happy gardening Richardx
Such a fun video! I have a flock of chickens. Plenty of chicken drama! The more fresh grass and crop trimmings you give them the oranger the yolks will be from the plant clorafil. I dont give corn during the hot time of the year. Chickens run warm. I put a small portion of red pepper flakes for worms and black oil sunflower seeds for protein in the layer pellets. I do love dietamatious earth. When they are roosting I rub a bit between each ones wings as they fluff their feathers the DE will sift down to the skin and kill any bugs. You are correct. The jome grown eggs are the Best!
Wow did know foxes climb 😱. Yes they seem a very curious and intelligent creature. Lovely share Tilley thank you. Have a wonderful day all, Ali 🌞☔️☔️🇨🇦
Thankyou Ali. We have chatted to chicken owners on our site and there are lots of stories about Foxes in our area, some of them quite crazy . It’s lovely to hear from you. Tilly❤
We do love our hens and try to give them some sort of enrichment to their day depending on the seasons and what is around! Thankyou for watching. Tilly❤
some v happy chickens ther . i kept my until ten years ago when i could not get to the allotment so often because of health . mine also use to sleep outside it will do them no harm providing fox can not get in . great vid all
Thankyou. I am lucky Tom and Hannah have a plot on the same site so that we can have a bit of a rota. They are really rowdy hens, nicknamed ‘The Spice Girls’. Tilly ❤
I use Smite powder and liquid spray on my chicken house. You only have to use every 6 weeks as the red mite have a 6 week life cycle. It works perfectly. I also use sawdust as bedding , very easy to clean every day and in winter I use straw as well instead of hay as I can compost it and not get grass seeds growing everywhere from my compost.
Well done on your chicken set up. You obviously care for them so much. Couple of things you might be interested in. Chickens have a higher body temp than us and can deal with cold much better than they deal with heat. They are walking around with feather duvets after all. If they get wet and cold that is not so good so I recommend you put clear tarp on the roof and round some of the sides to keep the driving rain out in the winter. Always have open areas for good ventilation though. Using clear tarps means they still can see out and you can see in. The wormer you eluded day to is Flubenvet. it does not have an egg withdrawal period so you can keep eating eggs when you use it. Best thing to do is get a worm testing kit from Westgate labs to check if there is a worm burden in the flock and if so use Flubenvet. Vermex doesnt kill worms it just makes their gut healthy and less likely to support them. I look forward to more posts to keep up with your lovely flock. All the best. Mags
Thnkyou for your advice, I will give it a go, It’s bewildering with all thd production the market. When I owned my old horse I religiously wormed him but one of the ladies never wormed hers, and she had 4! One day when I was poo picking in the field I noticed her horses poo was covered in worm eggs, it was horrific! My friend and I used to send off samples for testing and luckily ours were ok. Thankyou so much for your advice and for watching the vlogs.Tilly❤
Have you thought about some wood branches a bit higher up, you could find our hens roosting in the beams above the cow shed. Great vlog, thanks for sharing.
@@nettie8376 Thankyou, yes we have been talking about this. The logistics of the shape of the run and our access are quite awkward but we are soon going to be winterising the run and will see if we can come up with something. Thankyou for your help with this. Tilly ❤️
Hens will peck new feather folical and get blood from it. This activity normally starts when they start moulting This is a problem, as the hen found doing this needs to be removed from the flock until all feathers are grown, otherwise it'll just keep doing it. And by the way say hello to Eric, he's my brother in-law 😅😅
Not sure if my reply deleted itself just now. Anyway thankyou so much for your advice and for watching. Eric is great, he is such a lovely guy. Tom has polytunnel envy whenever we do our site tour Tilly ❤
DE powder is great stuff. Ive heard you can make a slurry with it to paint onto surfaces if the dust is irritating. We use the spray recommended by the poultry vet (nettex is the brand I think). There isnt an egg withdrawl period for flubenvet worm treatment- you can get layers pellets with it included. Had to get some for our ladies and had a suspected gapeworm case. Also DEFRA might be upset about the dried mealworms even tho chooks love them! Apparently live ones from the uk are ok though? Think its because the ones not from the uk have been found to grow in human 💩... Unsure how true that actually is though. Love the perches and enrichment in your run and your treadle feeder. Some thoughts here for improvements on our run set up. Happy hens indeed!
Hi again Just to let you know the Mealworms we use are from a company based in the uk and have been sanctioned by Defra in case you are concerned. Kind regards Tilly ❤
@@AllotmentFamilyDiary ah that's wonderful. I knew you could get live ones that were ok but haven't heard of the dried ones. Could I have the brand name please? I'm sure our girlies would love some too 🥰
I also use diatomaceous earth food grade for my animals and it keeps them tick and flea free, but didn't think to use it for the chickens, thanks for this information☺ My chickens go inside as soon as the sun is gone☺
Thankyou for watching. They sell this where we bought our chickens and a few of other plot holders use it on our site. We do love our girls and they sre quite a rowdy lot. Tilly ❤
