Our regulations are 6 hens and 0 roosters. We have 20 hens and 1 rooster

😂😂😂 that’s normally how it works. Are you good with your neighbors?

@WhitepepperFarmshomestead oh yeah they actually all enjoy hearing the chickens. Not heard any complaints and I've had my chickens almost 2 years now.

A roosters crow is the same decibel level as a dog’s bark, hens cackle the same decibel as humans talking loudly. Myself and my neighbors all prefer the occasional rooster crow to any barking dog. 😊

I wish I had your neighbors 😭. We have neighbor dogs that bark SO LOUDLY! So much so that I can’t even film some days because they just won’t stop… yet I get the city called for the occasional loud hen. I agree with you 100%! It’s crazy to me that a dog barking is completely fine by the city yet a noise from a chicken (often times not as loud) isn’t okay.

We thought that we would have a few chickens and be satisfied, but we always seem to want more. That would be the biggest con for us - the need for more chickens. And the cost - the struggle is real! But we wouldn't give up the self-sufficiency that we've achieved. Great video. ♥

We're up to 40 with two heritage breed flocks and some assorted egg layers. The we're going to hatch the heritage breeds for meat, too, which means we will need to maintain about 50-75 each because of their slow growth.

I've put a float valve in my water buckets and little drink cups at the bottom. Also stuck an elbow and ball valve into the bucket above the cup but below the water line. I can use it to flush the cup whenever they get trash or food in it. The float valve is on a timed waterline that also irrigates the garden, goats, and duck pond, so I haven't had to carry water in MONTHS, and I only need to scrub the water bowls with a toothbrush every few weeks (the goat bowl gets a sink brush). If you have a water line or hose running anywhere near, think about it. Even a sprinkler line or drip irrigation line will work on these float valves.

A huge con of having chickens in the city or suburbia is that they attract rats. I tried every kind of trap available and eventually had to go with a pest service that comes every three months to change out bait boxes (a type of box that only rodents can get into). It is an added expense but I always have to make sure I'm keeping the neighbors happy and not being over run with rats. I've had backyard city chickens for over 15 years and your pro/con list is spot on.
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 6 месяцев назад
Huge con! We don’t have the issue because our two cats do an amazing job at keeping the rats under control. They drop them at our feet as “presents” 😂. But our friends directly across the street from us are currently battling a whole family of rats that has dug under their coop. They have been fighting tooth and nail for about 6 months now to get rid of them.

Have you done a video on composing the chicken manure to make it ready for the garden?
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 6 месяцев назад
I have not. I think in my video about the deep litter method I briefly talk on it.. but I have a list on my phone of potential videos and this is definitely going on that! I've been asked a few times how to compost it down, I feel like I could do a short...ish video on it!
@KitchenFamilyFarm
@KitchenFamilyFarm 6 месяцев назад
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead Noticed the channel name change 👍 Yea we use sand in our coop so we go in each morning with a cat litter scoop & put it on top of the leaf & grass clippings compost pile, the chickens scratch at it and about once a week we turn the pile. We’ll now that I need to allow time for the compost to turn before spring I’ve started putting the manure in 5 gal buckets & im not sure how to make it cold manure now. Will it turn on its own? Do I need to leave a head space to allow the bucket to burp? 🤷‍♂️
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 6 месяцев назад
@KitchenFamilyFarm I figured adding “homestead” gives a better picture of the different things I make videos about 😂. We keep doing what we do in the summer all through winter. The process slows way down but it works just the same. In the buckets is it manure only? You’ll want a carbon source for sure like with your dead leaves and yard clippings. To get a pile started we often times get some finished compost and mix it in with some nitrogen (fresh chicken manure) and add carbon usually in the form of wood chips, dry leaves, dead grass, dried out garden plants, etc. even in the winter we keep it in the pile, although we turn it much less than we do in the summer months.

@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead the mice are not a threat to your chickens. Your chickens look to you to sustain them, and the mice that wonder around around not a threat to them, because they are well fed and full before the mice become a problem

The cons are the cost. Everything else are pros to me. I love having chickens. I change their water twice a day. My girls are Barnveldors and are pretty quiet for chickens, and descent at egg production. I put my chicken poop around my plants and as long as you dont put too much it will not burn your plants even fresh, just have to get used to the idea of JUST A LITTLE. I kill rats and give them to my birds. Pigs with wings😊😊😊. To prevent the stink my coop is movable. I move it often onto fresh grass and clean their roost area weekly. No big deal. Yeah the pros outweigh the cons I love my birds.
