Man i really like seeing these old huskys , im a huge husky fan for all big saws except the stihl 200t i had a 61 and a 2100 and seeing these bring back good memorys....
I removed the clutch and drum sprocket off of an old Remington today, and replaced the same on an XL-12. Both the clutch and sprocket drum were in horrid condition. No surprise the chain would come off. I knew it was not good, but I was amazed how bad it was. This clutch and sprocket was not setup correctly, I made slight spacing changes, and now it works excellently. The clutch from the old Remington was like new and the exact same part, how lucky was that.
The sprocket drum that was on this XL-12 looked to me to have slipped so much that it had become so hot the drum was stretched outward and warped. The clutch itself was worn down so much, it is amazing that I had cut wood with it. There is a metal disk behind the clutch and I could see scratched in this disk, that the shoes/feet/pads??? were rubbing while expanding and contracting. I added a thin washer between, so no more rubbing. Another washer that had been used on both saws was too thick and misaligned the chain causing it to run way to close to the drum body, and rub. I found a washer half as thick and that cured it.
With those clutches becoming difficult to find, would be interested to hear if there is a reasonable way to convert the saw to use a clutch that is more readily available. Great vids Tinman. Thanks
I would imagine that you would have to find one that is rated for the same rpm and the same diameter, then it's a matter of re-threading it to fit the spindle
I immediately went to mess with the carburetor adjustments. Then remembered you had a bad spring on another saw. Checked it and sure enough--a broken spring. What a relief scared myself with vision’s of air leaks.
I snagged one of these same saws, believe a 1982, for $150. Everything works, from chain brake to kill switch. Plan on doing a 272 top end with a pop up piston.
Good content. I've been buying some old Husky's. I have a 61 gray top with the same issue. Also a 257 with that issue. Replaced both clutches. Just picked up a 154se.
No Brasil ainda vendem 61 , eu tenho uma de 2001 montada em São Paulo Brasil. A fábrica tentou substituir por 361 usuários reclamaram, não caiu no gosto do brasileiro, a fábrica voltou a montar 61.
I had a 44 and the clutch spring was completely loosey goosey. Like beyond worn out. I just cut off a piece of the spring and made it tighter now works good. Maybe not the correct fix, but the cheapest.
I have (most) of a 61 practica that I’d eventually like to get put together. I’ll probably have to find a complete saw with a smoked top end to use as a doner though. I really like those older husqvarna saws.
Great vids tin man👍I like my 61. Old white top with no chain break. Only problem is it's the first series with the smaller vented oil cap and it needs one but there like hens teeth.
J : about September, The parts kids at the biggest dealer in the area,,had no idea what, a vented Husky gas cap???..never made them, you mean an oil cap. No. Searched the internet, no luck,, but found a used one, finally. Not.. Went back to senior parts person ,with old cap for evidence,,fumble, fumble, O, old stock,, sorry. I just love computers diagrams..Not a believer. Please,,I've been here before. Ugh Called the Husky Shop, Grants Pass Oregon, they said how many. Shocked!! Me: You have them??. Yep brand new. Hallelujah. Gave 100 bucks for mine. Always wondered if that was a good deal, friend needed money. Run great, now doesn't leak, and still runs great.
@@edwinhsingmaster9135I know what you went through the dealer looked at me like I had two heads. I was able to switch the gas tank to a newer 200 series but still on the lookout for the oil cap.👍
Back in the DAY scoring of the piston and cylinder were EXTREMELY RARE and they were using 30 weight motor oil. You GOOD oil doesn't seem to be holding up if you look at how many cylinders are scored now. There was a PLAN when they went to 50:1 and it wasn't GOOD for you but GREAT for THEM. Rebuild your saw every few years....or better yet, buy a new one.
Are you sure you can not just replace the spring? I have just picked up one of those same model. Only the bottom end . Not sure what I am going to do with it but it was thrown in with a welder that I bought. By the looks of the piston it was run on straight gas.
Hey tin-man I thought I would let you know I have a 562xp like you I like it but I just pulled the starter off how cheap can you get better check it out
Nice practica, just got a line on a couple 266 if it pans out I will be adding them to my collection after I rebuild them...oh yes they will be mine... oh yes they will run again... oh yes they...willll cuttt... Just watched a couple of videos on your Playlist on 266 and AV mounts, got me thinking about my 268's and yes they are spongy, so they will be upgraded. Wonderful content, beautiful vintage saw. If anyone knows where can I purchase the AV mount removal tool, let me know and thanks. TC Tinman Mahalo 🤙🤙🤙
I thought a failed clutch was diagnosed by putting the chain under load in wood at more than 1/2 throttle and if the chain stopped moving under that load you knew your clutch was shot ?.. I dont know how he diagnosed this clutch.
Hey tin man I've got 3 61s all of them ported to varying degrees all 3 need new clutches the whole clutch assembly. i can't find any either . Not here on the west coast . Let us 61 owners know if ya find a source oem or otherwise. Thanks love the vids
I got a poulan 4900, the chain doesn’t turn when the saw is running but you can turn the chain by hand and it moves freely would that be a clutch issue
I noticed you said "check for air leaks" and you tipped it both sides......so if it has a small air leak......when you tip it on its side.....will the idle pick up or lean out as qe say? If so my huskie 450 rancher has done that since day one but runs perfectly tuned maybe 2 percent on the rich side
I have a question for u tinman... Im starting a holzforma 372 today , can i break in at 32:1 and then run at 40:1 . i always run 40:1 and never had any prob..thanks
Hi Tinman. This is Panos from Greece. I have a 670 champ and yesterday after I replace the worm gear I noticed that when I put the brake the saw immediately dies. When it’s not working I pull the cord and the chain moving. Could it be a bad clutch or a drum? Thanks in advance. Hope all the best to you and your family!!
