I love that you didn’t completely erase its history! But instead worked with the imperfections by creating the custom stain. It’s beautiful! You are so incredibly talented. 🥰
Museum professional here: if an item does not have a clearly discernable individual provenance, it has no history. You restore it to factory standards at that point.
My grandfather, who was a carpenter all his life, used that trick. I never understood why until Angie explained it. I think since he started as a ship carpenter, they did that to let the next shift know how far they had gotten!
You have made me think about why I like pine. It's a combination of things. 1- the strange, uneven and often gnarly grain patterns are a kind of abstract beauty for me. I also love hickory because each piece is so individual. But pine isnt nearly so sophisticated and artsy. Its gutsy and robust in texture. It fits with the rustic architecture I enjoy. 2- Most of all, since I live in a grain growing area and see 200 year old hardwoods plowed over, Shoved into big holes, Burned and covered with dirt to make way for subdivisions, I mourn those big old trees, and every piece made of the more renewable pine is one less bit of demand for scarce hardwood. None of that applies to you because you work so hard to use the old, rather that purchase new hardwoods. Even a lowly pine bench turns beautiful in your hands. I love seeing what you can do. The bench is better now than it was before. Thank you, Angie.
Thank you very much for the kind words Cassondra, although I will say the mental image of those beautiful old trees burning makes me sad. We're so abusive to this planet and the resources on it. Thanks so much for watching and thank you for appreciating wood in all its natural wonder!
This was really informative. Your videos are so helpful to me because you don’t just show what you do. You explain why you’re making the choices you make for each piece of furniture. I love the way the bench turned out. I also enjoyed your side trip and watching Nacho inspect your work. The music was lovely, too.🌸
here's to hoping you can get where you want to be in a few months. Watching your artistic skill, I know the tattoo world will suffer for your loss, and still your happiness and fulfillment come first!
That epitomises the shabby chic school of furniture. Love it. Of all your work, I think that is your most appreciable transformation. Like the cat, all warm and cuddly.
Glad to see you are taking care of yourself. The drive in the snowy woods was beautiful. It was so smart not to try to remake the bench. Sometimes good enough is good enough. ❤
It will eventually get reborn once my need for it in my shop is over.. but I will reuse the lumber in a new project (maybe even a new build entirely!) so it wont go to waste. :-)
I've watched quite a few videos on restoring and repurposing furniture and I have to say you do a seriously professional job. That is probably why I watch more of your videos than other presenters. You also explain what you are doing and why you are doing it in a very clear manner. I'm so glad I got a break from my own work so I could catch up on your videos.
I love that your mind went to "fix" and not "trash". It's hard when what you have to work with at the start isn't necessarily the best quality. You made this beautiful and gave it another chance!
My mind always goes to fix, if it in any way can be! Most of the pieces I work on aren't antique quality pieces, they're overlooked pieces headed nowhere good. Thanks for watching!
Angie, I think you do a fantastic job, both in your beautiful work with furniture and in creating your videos. Would love to see more of you, Nacho, and bunnies.
Thanks! I really enjoyed sitting with my coffee and watching the live chat today. It was like going out with a group of friends for tea! Here are a couple more cups for you!
Thank you for always being creative & inspiring with your work. 😊 Seeing this video has given me a greater affection for the beauty & simplicity of pine. Who'da thunk a bit of thoughtful care could be so transformative? ❤
Turned out beautiful, like usual Angie! And to those that are disrespectful regarding a person’s personal choice, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You know the old saying “if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all”… that’s your lane. People need to mind their own business. Love your work Angie…and your ❤
It looks so much more rustic now, those square pegs in the round holes even look like old nail heads! The colour design looks more purposeful than the original stain. You sure live near a beautiful part of your country, glad you are breathing that in. Much love, look forward to the next toobs!
Very nice work! Love the Nacho cameo and the kitty paws ending. I have a soft spot for ginger kitties...shhh...don't tell our lynx point...seriously we love her so much. Time outdoors in nature is a perfect reset. Thanks for the video.
You have to have the mind of an engineer to do the work you do. You have to have a concept of structure and just how a piece was originally made to fit together. I loved the drive in the woods. What beautiful scenery. I did not realize you were still trying to maintain your tattoo shop though. When in the world do you and Andrea have any time to share fun things? Don't overdo, Angie. It's my belief that you have only one life. Don't neglect time for you and the people you love. I have to let you know that Nacho looks so much like a sweet kitty we had for 19 years. Our kitty was named Elmo. It was hard to let him go. He was such a character.
First… I love Nacho! He’s a Hemmingway cat! Second… I love how you explain everything as you go, even if stuff happens and the plan has to change! Awesome job!
You've done a great job turning a beat up horrible looking thing into something great. Liked the little breakout into nature too. Looks like sasquatch country.
I prefer the original color - since pine isn't very attractive on its own, but - wow - another quality restoration! Your talent never ceases to amaze me!
Beautiful job as usual. I love your channel, as you can see from my daily comments. 😊 You are so creative, skillful, and charming & you take the time to teach your viewers about what you are doing. Thank you. The landscape around you is stunning. Thank you for sharing it. 🩵
I really like this piece. While it’s not really old or special, the refinish gives it a new vibe of old world rustic farmhouse. It seems like an old family piece used by generations. It’s great,❤
Amazed by the number of clamps used @9:14! I love natural pine and the bench with all its dowels, marks, etc. once sanded. Your voice is very soothing and I enjoy the atmosphere of your videos. Watching this morning with coffee! A nice way to wake up. :)
I love the natural color you gave it, I would place my live plants on it. As always you do great restored works on wood pieces. Oh by the way that stream looked so peaceful to watch.
I love watching you work. You restore some gorgeous furniture to it's former glory and even the less than gorgeous pieces end up looking fantastic. Very informative and as a big fan of MCM furniture it's been very helpful of you to discuss the painting controversy as you tackle each piece. I have a better understanding of why some flippers would resort to paint. It's also just where they are in "their journey" as you explained. I love that way of thinking. And I promise not to engage in arguments with the "paint-it crowd" . 😂 I also love tattoos and polydactyl kitties. Nacho is wonderful! I have some fun ink and a magnificent polydactyl tuxedo guy with extra toes front and back. His name is Flapjack. 💕 Thank you for your awesome content. I'm really glad to have discovered your channel.
What strikes me about your videos (other than the stunning results) is your genuine care for the piece you’re working on and your apparent love for the craft. Even this “short-term fix” ends up looking gorgeous and so full of life 😍 And hearing you talk about your self care practice and mental health - watching your videos is part of my self care practice. I find them so calming and taking a break to watch something beautiful being lovingly created is a great de-stresser. So thank you so much for the beautiful work you create and the content you produce of it ❤🙏
I just redid it to save buying another piece for such a short amount of time. The bench will be repurposed when my tattooing days are through. Thanks for watching!
I loved the winter scenery. This is my first year living somewhere w/out a “real” winter and I have missed the snow SO MUCH. The footage you shared definitely also brought me some inner peace ☮️
Due to the flaws in the construction it would never last long term for this purpose. It will last as long as I need it to though and then I can repurpose the wood for something else to again give it another chance at life. Thanks for watching!
The square pegs in the round holes is really a head-scratcher. I appreciate the rec for a wood filler you like since I've never used that brand. Huge improvement to the bench, which I'm sure will serve you well now.
Precious polydactyl Nacho. I love orange polydactyl cats. I've had two. Little lovers. As for the much improved bench, I hope we get to see how you repurpose it some day.
Ok I have so many praises for this project! This piece is not “ high end “ yet you took so much time and care to make it useful again! Every single piece of furniture kept out of a landfill is a victory for Mother Earth! Full on repair , reconstructed and then refinished … what a happy ending for a piece that someone else would have burned or thrown away . 🎉
Loving, LOVING💕 the initial music with today's video. The bench looks tidy and serviceable now. Hopefully it will hold together for a while until you're ready to retire it.
If you haven't already repurposed this piece, may I make a suggestion? Use the top of the bench, sans those really awkward leg assemblies, cut it half, and make two little side tables for outdoor use. I know you have all kinds of legs squirreled away, so use some. A heavy outdoor boat varnish could be used to finish them off, which should stand up to even a bitter Nova Scotian winter! The character that the bench seat has shouldn't be lost. It is enhanced by your Odie's stain, and with proper sealing, could give you and Andrea a lot of nice late afternoons and evenings on your patio!
I like what you did with the bench! I'm not all that fond of pine, but I do like knotty pine, and the grain it has. I also like that you enhanced the grain on the bench. It's beautiful, and looks so natural now!
Angie, you continue to amaze us, your viewers. The product and the process is mesmerizing. Side note: new information for at least me that you have had tattoo shops! You just get cooler and cooler. :)
