I worked at a New Holland/Massey dealership up until a few months ago, we hardly sold any Massey's. Back when Massey started putting electronics on (autotronics/datatronics) there was lots of problems and left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. I don't think Massey ever really recovered from that (that's my opinion). Also, I don't know if it's just the way our sales Dept ordered the tractors or what but we never put loaders on anything, they were installed when they arrived. I did have an instance where a transmission housing broke due to loose loader bolts so yeah most Massey's are built on Mondays

I've always loved Massey Harris/Massey Ferguson tractors and combines. My grandpa bought a massey Ferguson dealership in 1967, and had in until 81. Those in my opinion were the glory days of Massey's. Fun fact, we didn't do hardly any warranty work until the 2000 series came out. But after the dealership we became a Combine salvage yard, had about as many massey as we did JD, Gleaner, and IH, but we only had the 300, 410, 510, 540, 550, 750, 760, 850, 860 combines, then in 1987 we became a Tractor salvage yard at another store, had a lot of massey there too, newest we had was a massey Ferguson 8150, which was also one of our best salvage tractors. As for collectible tractors, grandpa had a Massey Ferguson 165 High crop (the only one left in the world), Massey Harris 202 serial number 1, Massey Harris 4X4, Massey Harris 555, massey Ferguson 135 vineyard, just to name a few. Sadly he passed away a month ago, and we have to get rid of a lot of his stuff, we also closed the businesses last year. But I still do love Massey tractors, and combines.

Big cause of Egr cooler failure, is getting air trapped in the cooler. causing a hot spot and forming a crack. That’s just what I have found out. Usually has had a previous low coolant issue before the cooler fails.

Until very recently MF/Sisu engines used internal EGR, enabled purely by valve timing overlap, rather than the more complex external cooled EGR. Fairly sure that in Europe they only started using external managed EGR when they also introduced SCR [DEF] on the engines. Could be wrong, as things have been changing so rapidly in this regard in recent years.

I work as a Massey tech for the last couple years at a small dealership. The bolts loose is not a surprise, we have had to warranty anything from rims to loader bolts on their compact/subcompact tractors, causing us to have to check half a dozen different places and re'torque bolts before a tractor goes. We don't install loaders at our dealer, as far as i know most don't, when we order the tractor it comes pre-installed. We haven't had this specific issue on any of our 4600s, but water pumps have been decently common, and we have done 2 starters. An annoying thing about the 4600s is that when you pull the hydraulic filters (there are 2 and are big) the tractor dumps oil on the ground, about 5 gallons if you are really fast per filter. Its to the point where we will drain all the hydraulic oil when we do just a filter change just to avoid a mess.

I worked at a Kubota dealer for a while. Customer dropped off a kubota about the same size As this Massey. He had bought it at an auction. It was an ex construction company tractor and it had been rode hard. The loader mounts went under the tractor by the trans and they were all missing bolts. I’m not sure how that managed to happen. Tractor ran and drove good but the front diff was shot and the tractor looked like it had been used during a tornado. We had to replace the front diff gears and drop the front axle. They were chipped to pieces. It’s amazing what people will ignore on these machines. It had been ran with a loose loader for a while

Seen multiple failed EGR coolers, only a couple causing the engine to lock up. I always thought the hydro-locking due to a cracked EGR cooler causes the exhaust gas/coolant mixture to be brought through the intake side of the engine once the EGR valve opens. Not going through the exhaust valve into the cylinder. Especially being that most EGR coolers are mounted under the exhaust manifold.

@@Cragified huh? Yeah you would replace the bearings no matter what and I'm not really insulting his decision to replace the rods since he's already there... I'm just saying it would be a nice thing to know or see if the rods were actually bent, just because. Or as a data point for later to know how likely it is that rods get bent after an episode like that. It's not a hard or time consuming measurement to take... wouldn't surprise me if he did it and just didn't share it with us.. Because if the measurements were the same or close and show that the rods might not have been bent than that might not look great after spending all the time and money.. lol
@Cragified
@Cragified 4 года назад
"Because if the measurements were the same or close and show that the rods might not have been bent than that might not look great after spending all the time and money.. lol" The time and money was already spent. The head was off, the caps have been removed to look at the bearings. Taking the pistons out and swapping the rods is a few minutes time. So other then cost it is already done, and since MF wouldn't give him a spec it had to be done to warranty the job. So no point messing around with dial indicators for a quarter hour. The fact was that one rod wasn't true to the others so one had to be changed. At that point without a spec it didn't matter if the other two were true to spec or not so you change those as well given that there was water in all the cylinders. From a curiosity perspective it would be interesting to know if all got bent or not. But in terms of costs and time finding out would only add more labor to the customer or be waste labor for the shop operator.
@chickenfishhybrid44
@chickenfishhybrid44 4 года назад
@@Cragified I never said replacing the rods was a bad idea. Don't understand why you felt the need to beat that to death. Still stand by seeing the numbers even just for shits would have been nice. Our modern large class 8 engines are dependent on the coolant reservoir to protect against cavitation but it is an integrated part of the system and is pressurized. I would imagine this little engine is similar. Break the reservoir and even if it stays cool on the gauge could be boiling water in the cooler and warping it / cracking it. Pretty sure the 4600 series are the cheapest built tractors I’ve ever worked on. If it wasn’t the egr coolers ruining engines it was the breaks dragging or the input shaft for the trans twisting off. And they all had loose or missing loader frame bolts

Love the video, I just have two items to bring up. First, the initial loss of coolant could have led to the EGR cooler failing. Many newer diesels require special procedures for filling the coolant system. If an air pocket was left in the EGR cooler, the cooler itself will over heat and crack in this location. This was common in early 6.7L Cummins. Also, the turbocharger may fail in the future if it was not replaced. The coolant does a number on the journal bearings. Even if it felt find at the time of the repair, the turbocharger will have a shortened life.

Sad these modern tractors will never be (grandpa's) 8n or Farmall or 70 year old whatever tractor they will be garbage scrapyard material in 20 or less years as Soon as the emmisions kill it and the repairs are more than the tractor is worth sad but true, so keep that old iron running
@farwest571

Can you still run a farm with an 8n or 70 year old tracker and be profitable? I dont thinks so...I have this same argument with my family...this is the future of farming as I see it...my grandpa would not buy a machine without a clutch until my dad went and got one without him knowing...the last generation dose not like anything the next generation will use...sure they made things to last in the old days...but where not in the old days anymore...if your in line to inherit the farm or ranch...do not be afraid of this new technology...learn how it works and how to properly maintain it...because the stuff there going to come out with in the years to come I'm sure will be much more complex and challenging...good luck
@farwest571

@Wikkitt Klown you said it with the lease...you have very good points...I dont know who the walkers are but I'm glad that there able to make it work with the older machines....I feel the same about buying a new peice of equipment...no way...for the past 5 years we've leased all our harvest equipment....regular maintenance and if anything major fails its warranty...luckily our local dealer is USUALLY on sight fast...but I could see how this could be a problem...we've purchased insight for John deere and can do most diagnostic tests and miner code clearing to get us through till the dealer shows up...I just want us to be ready and at least have a clue as to how these machines work and operate...agin this stuff is not going away and is only going to get worse
@KR-hg8be
@KR-hg8be 4 года назад
@Wikkitt Klown the welkers are running restored, fairly heavily modified tractors with stuff like gps self driving equpiment added on to make them as efficient as possible.. And then they have problems with nla parts for stuff like the twin disk trans they reused in those old big buds. I think the fact that big buds were built useing engines from semis is what makes it possible to keep them going. You'll also notice how they get all exited when they demo new stuff like that patriot sprayer, huge new ih combines or the quadtrac because it gets the job done so much faster than the brute or buds do.

@@farwest571 At least in mining, you can run 70-year-old rail equipment and be profitable. All of our rubber-tire is 30-50 years old as well, new enough to have some safety features but no computer chips.

If you don't have pressure in the cooling system especially under load it will cause localized boiling in the egr cooler causing hot spots leading to internal warping/cracking of the cooler even if it's not getting hot otherwise

Where is the massive engine? The EGR should have been mounted lower so that it drips out the exhaust instead of into the head.

Nope, built on the last shift of a Friday right before a holiday weekend or week long shutdown. Also, EGR does have other benefits besides just emissions. Cooling the EGR gas is mostly emissions though. It would be nice if a simple part like that didn't trash the whole engine though. Some QC on parts supply is in order.

As far as i know most of the yractor assembly is done by agco not the dealer at least thats the way our dealership works all out smaller tractors 4600 and 4700 series come with the loaders and tractors fully assembled all we do it a basic pdi to check fluids and some hardware but things like the loader and engine are put together at the assembly plant or the assembly center before dealer delivery

The weird part is that's more iseki, I have a friend with one and he likes it, but I do understand they were not popular, and they appeared to fill a gap in there line up, the Chinese assembled 47,57,67 series seem to go well here, they sell so well in USA they have opened a factory there too, they utilise a trans from the French factory, sisu motors (valtra origin)

Egr coolers leaking can be caught early if you do oil sample tests and send them to the lab. There should be a coolant pressure sensor to detect exessive pressure from a bad egr cooler, air compresor or failed head. It could even tell you the rad. cap is failed or if it loses pressure all at once it means a hose blew and you dont have to wait for it to start overheating to find out. Reusing piston rings, ID like to Hear more about that

I don't think there's any Massey in a new Massey. It's all just the same AGCO crap with a different paint job. I still don't understand why they can't make an air cooled EGR cooler. Seems like it would be much safer and simpler.
