A general contractor built his own house and sold it to the current homeowners. Many times "general" contractors do not have the experience to complete "specialty" contractor work to professional standards. While this bathroom did hold up for almost 20 years, it was rarely used. If it was used regularly, there would have been issues resulting from a lack of waterproofing in critical areas, and improper building methods for the wall board.
Hardibacker is not waterproof, and even though it is approved for use in wet areas it needs to have additional waterproofing installed on top or behind it. Sharing these videos is not to embarass or shame anyone, it is an opportunity to provide education for homeowners and DIY's who are learning about proper tiling methods.
