This is a test of the 125 gr Badger, Single Bevel 2 blade head.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a score of 22. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 10.75 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.25" = 3.5 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.25”=3.5 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.74 pts)
Initial sharpness 9%, 314 grams = 8.86/10 = 7.97 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +13 grams = 9.74/10 = 8.77 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10= 2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 16.15 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8.5" = 9.44/10 = 9.44 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score. (47 layers= 6.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 18.6 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9/10 = 4.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (6/10 = 2.1 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
Bonus:
+.45 pts single bevel rotation 45 degrees @ 11.5 "
TOTAL SCORE: 85.24 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
Price: $18.33/head

Some really cool concepts on display there, with obvious drawbacks. If a company blended these unique design features with those of the vpa omega I think a lot of hunters in the single bevel realm would give it a lot of consideration

Seeing how the torque the head made on its self on the cinder block and the damage it caused itself. I bet it gets damaged on heavier bones the same way and lessens the arrows pentration. Not bashing. Just what I see when I look at it after it hit the cinder block.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 29 дней назад
Yeah, perhaps. But I don’t think that would be very common.
@BadgerBroadheads
@BadgerBroadheads 29 дней назад
In our experience that lateral force helps break bone and get you the continued penetration, if you had a different broad head it would likely stick in the bone completely stoping your penetration
@ClintonAndrus-n1m
@ClintonAndrus-n1m 27 дней назад
@@BadgerBroadheads not hardly. I have smashed Magnus ser razors through the heavy bones of deer/hogs and grimreaper mechanical broadheads from my crossbow as well. I'm not bashing your product, I'm sure folks will like them. I understand how the single bevel is supposed to work. I just don't see any need for it and any animal really. And when I see a broadhead do damage to itself like that on a cinder block. Then I definitely don't think it will fair all that well on the heiver bones of whitetail deer and feral hogs. Their heavier bones are much denser then that cinder block. I do wish yall luck and hope y'all sale a ton of them. For me it's not something I would want on the end of my arrow.

Why is it that everyone who is focused on penetration also prefer rotation, which reduces penetration?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 29 дней назад
Well, a head that rotates very well can penetrate more deeply if it strikes a big bone, cause the rotation helps split the bone, allowing the arrow shaft to slide thru more readily. I've tested that a number of times. And it creates a bit more damage internally. But, I always want to use a head that has a good chance of getting a pass thru. If this head can penetrate well enough to pass thru an animal AND create better wound channel, then that's why people would use it.
@ThirdLawPair
@ThirdLawPair 29 дней назад
@@LuskArcheryAdventures That makes sense. Single bevel designs are great because they penetrate more in bone and less in soft tissue. I get annoyed with guys who preach maximum penetration at all costs, but don't specify penetration in bone vs tissue. For a broadside shot on a whitetail, penetration through tissue will never be the limiting factor. So single bevel designs really are the best of both worlds, but not always for the reasons that people preach.
@banjohappy
@banjohappy 28 дней назад
Seems you would have to make sure your arrow fletching is set to rotate the arrow in the same direction as the spin created by the badger. Otherwise they would fight one another and either reduce arrow spin or eliminate it, thus reducing accuracy. Need slo-mo vid to show what happens when rotation same and opposite.
@BadgerBroadheads
@BadgerBroadheads 27 дней назад
You need to shoot a straight or right fletched arrow.
