When looking at the Magnus “ I think it’s gone do something funky” I just LOL’ed because I knew from experience it was gone be money. Magnus fly great.
I shot a doe with a buzzcut a few weeks ago got about a 3/4 pass though. she ran about 50 yrds. The razor sharp head just shredded her insides and she ran off.
Currently using the 125 black hornet non-serrated. Shot very close to my field tips. Not saying I did it, but if you were to bury a broadhead at 45 yards into the woodshed framing and broke the ferule trying to get it out, they will cover that under their lifetime warranty. Couldn't get it out, it was buried too deep. Again, not saying I did that.
For bh performance reviews I highly recommend John Lusks videos. His process is very consistent and detailed, and every test serves a purpose. Although your tests are fun and entertaining, which I suppose is the real intent, I think it your bh comparison didnt yield any substantial results. But then again, your BH choice doesn't matter much if you put the arrow where it needs to go.
The only thing in my experience that can ruin a Montec is a rock. I got a pass through into a root ball and even that didn't destroy the broadhead. A passthrough into a dry creek bed did curl the tip a little but I was able to sharpen it out and reuse it.
You should test the Muzzy 100gr Traditional 4-Blade. I’ve been shooting Muzzy 4-Blades since the 1980’s and they’ve never failed. Last fall I shot my elk with my 409gr arrow at 110 yds and got a total pass through. And they hit point of aim to 130 yds. right along side my field points… I don’t think you’ll be disappointed…
Ballsy taking a 110yd shot on an animal. I wouldn't take a shot at anything past 65yds to many factors come into play that far. To each their own I suppose.
I’ve really enjoyed my iron wills and QAD Exodus. I used the standard blade exodus last year and blew through a big white tail. This year I’m using the Exodus swept blade. They fly even better than the standards which fly incredible. I could have probably just used the standards again this year. They’re still in great shape and sharp. For 40 bucks a pack, why not try others? I highly recommend them if you can’t or prefer not to spend big money on iron wills. Cool test @Chris Bee
The montecs are nice yes they rather dull out the box but they are easy to sharpen. Take 15 minutes and run em over some stones and they will stay sharp
Iv shot g5 Montec for 15 years. Most reliable and I personally have harvested 2 deer with the same broadhead without sharpening for the second use of it . But I never knew you could lay them flat to sharpen them ha
Why keep testing the same blade for sharpness? If it doesn't cut paper the first few tries then that blade isn't sharp enough. Prove it's not a one off by at least testing the other blades of the head.
Magnus has been my go-to this year broadheads. Best thing I like about them besides they fly awesome, is the warranty they offer. Any damage you email them a picture and they send you a new broadhead in the mail. Honestly don't know any other company that does that.
Been shooting Exodus for years and while they can be picky when it comes to tuning, they've always stood out in almost every other important department. I've tested about 20 different broadheads over the years (roughly 10 fixed and 10 expandable) and kinda lost trust on expandables for whitetails
I've been researching fixed blades for a while. Can't afford buying a boxful of different ones to try, so I've decided to go with QAD Exodus. They usually finish pretty decent in most tests I've seen. They're a LOT of quality fixed blades to choose from these days, to the point we're splitting hairs between the top brands on performance it seems. A lot more complexities involved in mechanicals, which is one reason I avoid them altogether; my fixed blades are already "deployed" before they leave the arrow rest. Some people swear by mechanicals, others swear AT them. To each his own. My 80 year old father arrowed a small buck last week with a Thunderhead 125 that's probably killed a dozen deer or more over the years. He's tight as bark on a tree, he'll just sharpen the blades and put it back in the quiver. I doubt there's many mechanicals that have gotten into double-digits on deer with just routine sharpening, but I could be wrong, I'm not an authority on broadheads, but I have been using them for over 40 years now.
Great video as usual. Main point here from Chris is tune your bow and use helical fletch. When you do they all “fly like field points” I’d use any of these but fond of something I can sharpen. Thanks Chris. Can’t wait see your hunts this year.
I'd like to see you test the Annihilator XL 100grn broadheads. Lusk Archery Adventures did and excellent video review and test but I'd be interested to see what you think of them.
When I switched from mechanical to fixed I found the hornet ser razor to be my favorite. Flew really good, blade thickness/structural integrity was nice. First year I ran it through a super mature buck hard quartering away. Put it last rib and it came out right behind the shoulder. Was a little worried I only got one lung with that hard angle but he only ran about 60 yds. I recently switched to the tuffhead Evo 3 blade because I didn't like the loud buzzing noise in flight of all the vented heads. Plus it is easy to sharpen like you showed with the montec. I have a set of 4 small diamond stones in diff grits that I keep in my hunting crate. If I ever need to ReSharpen it is super easy
@austinhall5933 so I actually haven't shot anything with it yet. I moved to Qatar. Been here for a year.will be here another 2. Flew back for a week last season and shot a deer but it was with a rifle bc I needed my meat for the year. Processed it myself and brought it back here to the middle east lol. I'm going to be back down in texas for 3 weeks this time so I'm hoping to try to get it done with my bow so I'll let you know how the tuffhead works out
I've used 3 of those over the years. Montec, Slicktrick, and the Magnus Black Hornets. Hands down, my favorite between them is the Magnus. They fly great, cut big, are made of a carbon steel instead of stainless (means it can take a better edge and hold it better) have the second best blood trail of any broadhead I've used and I've never had a whitetail go more than 50 yards out of the 9 that I've taken with it. By the way, I've used the same blade to take all 9 of those deer. 2 ferrules, but the same blade, just reshaped. The Slicktricks were great, but I broke a blade. Personally, that is unacceptable. The positive of the slicktricks is that they have consistently left the best, most consistent blood trails I've ever gotten. Big 2 blade expandables included. My experience with the Montecs is that the indeed flew the best, and was the easiest broadheads to tune. However, the are the dullest broadhead I've ever bought and lose their edge very quickly. The dull broadhead left much to be desired when it comes to a blood trail
@@NEFARIOUS_B.I.G. Good to know! To be honest, I shot the Montecs back when they first came out. I haven't looked into anything G5 since my experience with the Montecs. If I ever look to going back to a 3 blade design, I'll definitely look into the carbon steel version.
I use a cheaper version of the G5 Montec and I love how easy it is to sharpen. I’ve always gotten pass throughs even if I hit a rib. If you sharpen it right it will go through anything. Even the scapula
Been archery hunting for 10 years now, shot 7 whitetail, 3 elk and 2 bears with the montechs. Never even sharpened one until this year. My longest blood trail was 250 yards
Even though I no longer hunt, back when I started in the early 80's I shot fixed 3 blades and always sharpened them no matter what. It was a pain, but I never took anything out of the package I didn't have to mess with. Just my curios nature I guess. If you don't want to spend the time to make sure the part that does the killing is as good as it can be, then maybe you should consider spending your time doing something other than hunting.
Great video Chris, I'd pick the G5s just due to the one piece design and ease of sharpening. Those blades are not sharp at all! My pocket knife will slice through paper like nothing. I do touch up my blades with a ceramic stone right out of the package, after all we owe it to the animal to take them as quickly and humanely as possible.
I've killed over 50 wild goats and a few deer with Magnus 🤪 they are awesome bleed and lung popping wise etc and my first half dozen flew silently and true as any other broad heads.... but then the next 3 packs sounded like a jet zipping by!!! I had to change broad heads cause the animals heard them coming !!!
Have shot magnus for 2 years now only complaints they are loud in flight and not a whole lot of blood to trail. Currently trying hydroshocks this year and hoping I get better performance and more of a blood trail then magnus.
I would love to see you hunt with these broadheads this year. Try to keep it to 20-30 yds and see how they perform. Not going to be a perfect test, but I think it would be better than ballistic gel. Ballistic gel is designed to stop projectiles. Still a great test.
I shot Exodus for years with success, but settled on Magnus Hornets a few years ago. Tried G5 Montecs, but couldn't get them as dialed in for one reason or another or stay as sharp as the ser-razors.
One thing you didn’t mention about the magnus broad heads is they have a lifetime no BS warrantee. If you bend or break or damage it in any way beyond repairable they will replace it no questions. Best value for your money in my opinion. Would have been nice for you to discuss the MSRP as well or cost per broadhead. Otherwise well done.
Used rage 2 blade for years awesome blood trail but then started losing deer found bladez werent opening switched to g5 montec 125 grain and love them never going back
Would you be apposed to testing the rage 4 blade extreme? Looks like a nice broadhead and Been looking into trying them but skeptical on how they would fly and compare to the megameat.
Initial sharpness is cool to examine but shouldn’t be weighed that heavily. You’re should shoot them to make sure they fly with your setup which will dull them. What matters is how hard it is to sharpen and how well they hold an edge. These videos are always interesting though
You should test the kudus, they’re fixed blades but haven’t seen very much content out there yet. They fly good for me killed my bull double lung pass through at 65 yards
G5 is all one piece, they sharpen real easy and if you buy the carbon they are very sharp and sharpen better. I've passed through and drove them in the dirt and rocks, no damage. They shoot excellent, great on a quarter shot, and on feathers like turkey.
I don’t know how to braud head tune at all but I tried the g5 Montec’s and couldn’t get them to fly strait so I tried the grim reaper white tail specials and they in my opinion fly so much better
G5 is definitely my go to. Ive tried a large variance of broadheads over the years and have had the best results from the g5. And it can be re used without changing blades, just wet stone the edges a little and go again.
Montecs, along with other solid 3 blade broadheads, have a 30 x 30 degree bevel which is not as sharp as a replaceable blade. G5 Striker V2s and Slick Tricks have German Lutz blades made in Solingen Germany. These blades are scalpel sharp and blood trails are incredible.
Just crushed a doe with exodus in pa she ran 40 yards. Quartering to. Went in lungs and off side hole had intestine coming out. And buried in the dirt.
I hit the far rib on a quartering away shot on a whitetail deer with Montec. The arrow did not pass through, and the tip was curled over 1/8”. Dead deer, no problem but wondered what the result would be if I had hit the near side rib on the entrance side? I switched to QAD since the hardened tip looks like it would split a rib and not curl over. I also honed all the Montec’s right out of the package to bring them to razor sharpness just to be safe. The QAD blades right out of the package were razor sharp. Great video Chris, thanks for the comparison!
I smoked a doe with my micro hades vaptko 70 pound elite Omni’s at 26 inc draw. At 22 yards it blew through her and stuck in the sand almost to my fletchings. Only problem I had was little to no blood she was 130 yards with 1 lung and top of the heart.
Mechanicals win the sharpness test out of the package because they are literal razor blades. It's tough for solid fixed blades to come off the mill razor sharp without hitting a hone machine. Some companies don't hone before packaging, some do.
i been a montec G5 fan over 25 yrs and haven’t changed broad head, but i tried grand reaper before. o fine take care for the results of the test if sharpness only cared about results of my success… G5 i can resharpen with a sharpening tool or rock.
A pass through is a pass through. I’ll take a 2” cut over 1” all day and the way Rage Original has performed for me so many years I have trouble changing. But I have had great success with G5 Deadmeat. The gaping entry hole of the Rage is mind blowing.
Chris, huge fan. But what the heck are we doing with this sharpness test, borderline comical. Definitely should’ve edited that part out. LOL. Not hating, just saying.
Shot 9 does last year with the 125 grain Exodus....unbelievable results. Broke bones went through shoulders, zero damage. Super sharp on my Sharp Bess tester. Shot 5 deer with slick trick, they ran a lot further with less blood then the Exodus. My buddy shot a few deer with montec...pretty dull out of the package.
Agreed Exodus is much better than the Slick Trick. Both are very solid heads but the blood trails are no comparison. Exodus produces much more blood on the ground regardless of shot placement.
