When you think of "Badjao" what comes to mind? Here in Tawi-Tawi I found out something fascinating about women here in a Badjao community along the coast of Bongao Island. They are incredible at weaving!
In this video, you will see me visit a local Badjao community and spend time with some of the local women in their home. Through weaving, they create these incredible banig designs... If you didn't know, a banig is a hand woven mat that can be used for a variety of purposes. I actually received a banig as a gift two years ago from friends who call Tawi-Tawi home! And on this day, I got to experience how they were made...
By the hands of beautiful local Badjao women who live over the ocean.
This banig weaving is incredible, this Badjao community was so friendly, and I am just so happy to have had the chance to experience this side of life here in Tawi-Tawi.
These are my favourite banig in the Philippines, and I am so appreciative of these Badjao women for taking the time to talk with me.
Power On!

I agree. You should not haggle when you buy directly from the source. I have that mantra ever since someone pointed out to me that in big malls, you simply cannot haggle. And that's a big corporation. So we should also support our local producers like that. So whenever I can, I try to buy directly from small farmers/fishermen in our town. And whatever price they say I always stick to it. 😊

"When you think of "Badjao" what comes to mind?" - Gypsies of the seas. They are a group of people not exclusive to Philippines but also in other parts I think from Indonesia, Malaysia as well. But of the same ancestry. That's what comes in mind.

Watching you interviewing the three ladies reminds me of a story about my great grandmother's creativity of Banig weaving. Based from stories, my great grandmother was good in designs and then put the design to banig making. She learned the skill by just watching people weaved. According to story especially in the Barrio, when planting or harvesting season is over there's not much to do so, young girls hang out and start doing something with their hands and Banig weaving became their free time activity. I hope these three ladies will pass their skills to young girls so the tradition will continue. The designs in the banig are intricately done. The way they put the designs and color coordination are eye catching. I am truly impressed! I hope your visit in Tawi-Tawi will attract local and foreign tourists to see for themselves that Tawi-Tawi is a safe place to spend a night or two. It's really nice that you are incorporating variety of stories to your videos - Looking at the video, it looked as though everyone is engage in something else - busy and you captured it perfectly - well done!

I was there 3 years ago for a week and just would like to say I’m so glad that you seems enjoying over there Kulas, and also I would like to add some a little info in regards to the that weaving mat they are absolutely incredible but actually its originally the tausog tribe WHO is the original weavers of it, they discovered about the* pandan * plants that they can weave into so many different things like a the MAT and also the food cover or they called it TUTUP and also some are making baskets or hat out of it and so many more other things, and also as far as I know way, way back decades or so ago the badjao tribe only live at the sea they never come to live on land I’m not sure why but that’s how they live before, they just make a floating house on the sea so they have no idea what is life like on land, only just very recent century that they mixed up with the different tribes live on land and they even sending their children to school to learn and mixed with the main community which is a positive thing to me.
