I love that there's such an abundance of robot duplicates to Sonic. The fact that so many of them are poorly designed or only made one appearance really makes them feel like failed prototypes prior to Metal (I know they're from various different universes but let me have this lol)

Sonic and Tails relationship in fleetway felt like mine and my brothers relationship as kids. Specially since he was always my player two. His 'helping' with tails often got me hit as sonic in a boss fight. Much frustration and minor insults thrown his way but still loved. I think the writers nailed their relationship for Young boys at the time in the 90s.

I'm starting to wonder, does Sonic the Hedgehog have more evil doppelgangers than any other fictional character? It's common for a hero to have an evil doppelganger show up as a villain in their stories. Spider-Man and Venom, Shazam and Black Adam, Iron Man and Iron Monger, Crimson Dynamo, and Titanium Man, Flash and Reverse Flash, ect. But Sonic has Silver Sonic, Robo Sonic, Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic, Rocket Metal, Shadow, Scourge, and now this thing, not to mention all the other one-off Sonic robots and evil Sonic duplicates in the comics.

Despite them using the word "battery," the animals inside would technically work like generators. So it's reasonable to imagine the Badnicks have an internal battery they rely on before finding an animal that allows them to function indefinitely on organic material rather than going back to Robotnick's base for a power outlet every time they need a recharge.

Could you imagine Fleetway Sonic in the same room as the other Sonic's or him fighting against Surge or Scourge?

that robotnik design was later explained, out of universe its just them expermenting with the design. Also I'm sure you'll learn, but sonic and tails both develop as friends over the whole series, with them resembling their game freindship way more by the end of the series.

I always considered Rollers from Sonic 1 as a sort of Badnik Sonic, meanwhile this thing looks like a rejected FNAF character.

4:37 My guess is that these Badniks have small amounts of limited battery power that allow them to ONLY move around and launch their tendrils (probably a one time charge) to capture an animal and use it's body energy to power itself and use the weapons and spikes and other gadgets it may have stored away at first, but be able to deploy and use when it has an animal inside. Also, I can't believe I've NEVER seen this little Sonic Badnik before! It's pretty cool! It could probably function as a VERY early prototype for Metal Sonic or at least some form of inspiration for Robotnik to create an Metal Sonic, since he'd only ever focused on Badniks in the early games. Maybe he built off a Badnik and we got the Game Gear Metal Sonic! 6:32 I think Robotnik's literally a robot because the Archie comics may have given that idea, since Archie Sonic's version of Robotnik (an later on, Eggman) was ONCE a human, but was eventually killed and another version from another dimension came in and was FULLY a robot. His name was "Robo-Robotnik". (Or maybe the crazy Fleetway comics through Robotnik was a literal mustache-twirling villain and a top hat with a robot body because of his name alone.) XD If Robotnik or Eggman ever came back to this classic little Sonic Badnik, it'd make a lot of Sonic games A LOT harder, but also more interesting. Also, I think the Sonic Badnik is SUPPOSED to be ugly on purpose to fit in with the other "simple, still scary" designs of the other Badniks. 9:17 You know those moments where Sonic and a robot or enemy face off, literally face to face? Yeah, that's a perfect instance for that grenade-nose to pop off the beak and explode in Sonic's face, catching him completely off-guard. Didn't think about that, did you? XD

I like to think all the fleetway sonic comic characters have British accents.

I was waiting for this. The fact that it can shoot spikes makes me think it was an early adaptation of Robo Sonic from sonic 2. The zipper teeth really reminds me of invader zim.

Yes, Sonic's spikes are unique compared to other hedgehogs, no, Robotnik just wears that suit randomly for this occasion, and yes, the comic is as weird and crazy as this, and it just keeps amping up. "Why doesn't Robotnik make any Badniks to house Sonic?" Well the easy answer is that he has to be caught first.

I'd say Fleetway Sonic is a more a bully with a massive inferiority complex given that he gets super jealous when Tails is seen to be more popular than what is. Plus he throws a right strop when Tails defeats Metal Knuckles after the doppelganger was kicking Fleetway Sonic's the ass before the little fox cub saved his ungrateful hide, insisting that he never needed Tails help as he would have beaten Metal Knuckles eventually, despite the fact he'd already been beaten by it once before in their first encounter and was now basically smacking Fleetway Sonic around for fun before looking at putting him out of his misery.

I think Badnik Sonic is way better than Pseudo Sonic (great name though). I do love how early to mid Fleetway is super faithful to the games (even Sonic 1 and 2 is canon to the comic). Anyway, I don't think you'll be running out of Sonic bots any time soon.

Potential suggestions for future Mecha March Madness videos: Robo Sonic (Shogakukan): From an early manga, it kind of goes with the same Badnik basis as Badnik Sonic, but looks more like the original. Metal Robotnik from the Sonic anime movie: A giant robot version of Classic Robotnik made by Robotnik, claiming him to be his own individual that went rogue in a manner similar to Heavy King. There's an Archie Iteration of it which an army appears. Titan Metal Sonic from Archie: Basically an extension of Metal Sonic from Knuckles' Chaotix. It had about two major appearances in the Chaotix adaptation and a future arc prior to the "Super Genesis Wave" thing as its own individual model rather than transformation. X Robot from Archie Sonic X: A sleeker robot created to use powers like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Its not any particular imitation, but rather meant to resemble all of them in someway. And Silver Sonic 3.0, another version of Silver Sonic from the post-Super Genesis Wave time, serving as a robot on the Death Egg 2, also got a second model

There was an interesting one-shot Sonic Comic in France back in the day. Only original character was Princess Alucion, who's pretty much just Knuckles in drag with a curvy figure and a leopard skin dress.

I feel like the Adventure games provide enough evidence to explain why Eggman utilizes only the small animals as organic batteries and not the larger anthropomorphic or even human characters: they in some way channel Chaos energy. GUN robots utilize Chaos Drives, designed to mimic Chaos Emeralds, as their batteries, while Eggman utilizes the Small Animals for the exact same purpose. Notably, Chao are able to absorb the energy from both Chaos Drives and Small Animals. While the Chaos Drives turn gray and disappear, the Small Animals are not actually eaten and can continue walking around the Chao Garden after being drained. The question, post-Adventure 2, is really why Eggman continues to utilize Small Animals rather than copying the Chaos Drive technology. If I had to guess, it's because the Small Animals provide constant energy and do not need to be replaced, while the Chaos Drives provide only finite energy. However, a consequence of using Small Animals as a battery source is their potential to impose their will upon the robot they inhabit (Gamma, Omega, etc.) This is why Eggman's robots are more lifelike and expressive where GUN's robots are emotionless and sterile.

In regards to Robotniks outfit here. There's no wider context for it. But in early stc, the staff were all basically work for hire and they mostly had no real knowledge of the franchise. This is Ed Hilyer's first strip for the comic and he almost definitely wasn't given any reference for what Robotnik was meant to look like and just made up the design.

Clearly you do not know about the seven chapter long story arch exploring the deep phychological issues of being a small badger in a world that has more humanoid badgers. I would definitely read that story though as much as i joke

Huh I'm still learning new stuff about StC. I started reading StC somewhere around issue 20, looking back, some of the comics were really weird heh. Still, I loved the main stories in the comics. Just went to show how good they were when they tried!

Again, fans make fun of Amy for confusing other people for Sonic. And yet, back in the 90s, in-universe characters did that with Pseudo-Sonic and Badnik Sonic. Speaking of mistaken identity would you mind convering the Sonic Jam cartoon one day, Nick?

I actually kind of like how this guy looks XD The Archie Sonic X comics early on have a storyline where Eggman uses robots powered by humans instead of little animals it's interesting to see any Sonic thing actually try that concept was neat to see even if it was only like 2 issues. The Archie comics did use a lot of game locations especially once Ian came around. one of my favorite things they expanded on from the games is using the Star posts to make portals to enter other universes since really that's kind of what they did in the games.

what i wanna know about badniks in this comic is what they're running on before the capture an animal. They seem to be in a fighting state even before they get their battery which makes me quetion what the flickys even do

I honestly think this Badnik Sonic would make a lot sense and effort if more was done with it. Remember that one Badnik from Sonic 1 that can roll into a blue ball? I always thought that was Eggman's original Metal Sonic, and Badnik Sonic would work as attempt 2 with Silver Sonic as attempt 3. After all with Silver Sonic he used an actual controller behind a glass window to control him, why would he do that?

I like some of the ideas present here, it's design really dials in on the "Badnik" aesthetic and feels more like a proper "Super-Badnik" than Metal. The curling into a ball and shooting out spikes is a neat touch as well. That said, the design is really busy and the inconsistent artwork doesn't help. I think if the backside was more rounded, like Roller, it would look less janky and the transition into a spiked ball would be more believable.
