Hello, I have a similar set, BBSHD and 52V, 17.5Ah, in a trekking bike - stiff, with a derailleur in the Alfine 11 hub. I have crossed 13,000 km in 3 years. (it's over 8,000 miles). I also ride this bike on asphalt in the mountains. Often beyond panniers - I weigh over 100 kg myself. Range in the mountains up to 60 -70 km after a flat 95 km. Oil in hub I try to change every max. 2000 km. Before each oil change, I rinse the hub with the same oil - I replaced the original oil with 'very good' mineral oil receded to hyplyid transfers. I don't use a constant grease. I use the main gear ratios 40/22 and a 9 -row chain. Because I have vertical hooks, I use a chain tensioner - from a good classic SLX derailleur with limited movement - adjustable screws. All other tensioners did not pass the exam - and the patent with a derailleur is already working 8000 km without complaint. Both the engine and the Alfine 11 have been operating without any accusation. The engine during this time I greased with good solid grease - lithium twice. This is a very good and durable engine. (Poland, Warsaw)

@@smallhatshatethetruth7933 That's an awesome testimony for the BBS02. I always wondered why delivery people gravitate towards hubs, that they then have to walk up any big hills. If you're racking up miles that quick you need spare drive-train parts, eventually. Might not be a bad idea to open up the motor, grease it and check if you need to look at spare parts for the motor too.

@@michaelsprinzeles4022 I actually ordered a spare motor without screen yesterday, either for parts or for quick swap out if current motor decides to die on me. My co-worker had a BBS02 and his nylon gear went after about 4000 miles I believe. He just switched to a BBSHD. I work in rain and snow and I know that is not good for electric things!

Currently well over 8500 miles on my BBSHD, replaced display (so unsure of total milage) also replaced the internal freehub & lubed metal gears once. I have not tried for a max speed by throttle on my current bike, but did get over 47 mph coasting downhill on pavement on my previous eMTB (probably faster, but older display couldn't go higher). Both were converted heavy duty mountain bikes (downhill racing or free-ride frames) using the same BBSHD mid drive and 52V battery. Main expense has been replacing batteries after water got into the plastic cases & shorted cells (I open them and seal case seams & openings with silicone caulk now). I was a year round bike commuter for 25+ years, on an eMTB for the last 5+. Programmed the controller for useful cadence and power levels for on road and various slow speeds/increasing power for climbs, makes a Big difference over stock programming. Regularly ride 25 to 40 miles, including off pavement and lots of climbing, using less than 50% of my 750 WH 52V battery. Still have an "acoustic" MTB, very similar to my electric MTB, to ride with folks on regular bike rides.

Very informative video, thanks for posting. I appreciate the extended mileage experience you shared. I am also impressed and happy with the BBSHD mid-drive, have about 800 miles on it so far, problem free. I put mine on a Mongoose Hitch fat-tire bike via a luna "hot rod" kit, very happy with that. With a 36 front chain ring and and an 11-34 freewheel, I can accelerate up the hills we have here in the bluff country of southern Minnesota and have hit 43 mph on the flats. Using throttle... I can't keep up with the pedaling at much beyond 25 mph. I actually find that the 750 watt mode is pretty adequate for most of my uses, still can get to 30 mph and my range is consistently over 60 miles with a 52V 20Ah battery. I have to chide you just a little on your choice of venue for the speed run, though... as e-bikers we don't want to get too much negative attention and get regulated out of the "free" world we currently are riding in... doing the speed run on a pretty busy highway going way over the speed limit and running stop signs is liable to capture that type of attention...! 😮

1) Never buy it from Ali.......buy from Lunacycles. They unlock it to 1500w max output and great service 2) Get rid of the factory BBSHD chain ring. Ugly and super heavy compared to a Leki or others 3) Re-grease that nylon gear about every 2000 miles 4) Swap out the factory controller for the Ludicrous controller for up to 3000w output 5) Get a "program" cable and software to fine tune much more than the presets available on the display. I run a BBSHD with Ludicrous controller(3kw) with dual 22ah 52v packs in parallel. Leki 32 tooth chain ring, 8spd Sturmey IGH and LOVE everything about it. Can hit 50MPH on flats. Bike on............

Im delivery rider using the BBS02 750w 48v 20ah for a year. My motor made 25.000km before being stolen :3 I just changed the clutch at around 18.000km (15£) Now i bought the same kit again. You can make easily more than 100km on one charge with pedal assist (my city is full of crazy hills) By the way, this engine is cheaper and lighter than BBSHD and 750w with 1000w peaks its more than enough for anything you can imagine. Dont forget to buy the programming cable, its necessary to put out the power as you need (the stock assist levels are ****) Just to let you know (if im wrong, please someone explain me) you are running your engine at 754w peak (52v x 14.5ah)
@michaelcastro5339
@michaelcastro5339 Год назад
754 watts/hour is the capacity (size) of the battery not how much power his kit is using at the moment. The kit can peak over 1500watts for short periods, the math is the capacity of the battery divided by the average(not peak) consumption of the motor tells you how long you can ride the bike for before you run out of charge on your battery. If his average was 754watts he would be able to ride for one hour before his battery was dead, if he rode at 1500watts it would take a bit less than 30 minutes and so on.
@AleHorry
@AleHorry Год назад
@@michaelcastro5339 Yeah, looks like im mixing the controller amps with batterry amps/h. You are right, as long as you have a 30amps controller, with 52v battery you cant get more than 1500w. I was measurig the battery capacity :3

12500km on the BBS02b 750W with my obese trike. The only advice I have on all Bafang midmotors. Grease the gears and shaft with a grease that isn't agressive for plastics. (the main, nylon gear and the small exposed printboards). On battery. The cells in those "Chinesium" Shark-packs are not top quality, and those 14.5Ah they promise are optimistic. Spend a bit more $$ on a better quality and bigger battery. (you could rebuild the pack with quality cells, and get better results) The charger is basic, but ok. The noise is the fan rubbing to a piece of plastic that got dislodged by the drop.

Its strange because I always thought the BBSHD had a torque sensor, and that was one reason it was popular vs hub drives.... 25 miles sounds about right if your going quite fast, I use a 28 amp hour 52v triangle battery and get about 60 miles range just from that battery but my gears are different to yours, I have the 42t front not the 46 or 48 and my rear ones are probably a bit bigger but not huge. I wanted to get a mid drive e-bike kit but the $800-$1,000 price is too stiff....I bought a $120 2 stroke engine kit and added $80 in better parts. For $200 I have a reliable,fast 35-40 mph,long range,100 mpg, motorized bike. It's actually not very loud (more quiet than a lawn mower), I can ride in the rain without fear of ruining an $800 kit. If I wreck, the worst I'd be out is $200, the main cons are- engine noise (but it also helps drivers hear/see you) & not 100% legal to ride everywhere in USA. The cops won't bother you here if you don't ride stupid. Sadly, gas VS electric, weighing the pro's & cons gas won. If I wasn't sick/could work/ had plenty of money, I'd probably have a mid drive E-bike.

I'm not biased against electric bikes/vehicles but it sounds like you're biased against motorized bikes/vehicles & not taking everything into consideration. If I knew for sure a $1,000 kit would be a better deal/more bang for the buck long term I would have tried to get one.....Hopefully solid state batteries will live up to their claims.

@@marthamryglod291 The gas & oil mess is for sure annoying... I'm hoping solid state batteries live up to the hype & will be out in a couple more years. I just don't wanna sink $1,000 or more into an ebike kit & have it fall apart in a year. Which seems to be the case for many people. I have a top speed of 40 mph, 90 mpgs & can ride long range for $250 in parts, seems like a good deal to me. Parts are cheap if something breaks. I can buy a whole new engine kit that comes with new gas tank, chain,sprocket,etc..for $140. I seen a $3,600 Trek Roscoe build with a 5,000w mid drive. For less than 1/4 the cost, my bike is almost as fast ($50 in part upgrades would make it just as fast) & stronger but doesn't have the extra gears for steep hills. I don't think that's worth paying more than $3,000 for though. I'm curious how long their 5,000w mid drive motor will last.

I mounted a BBSHD on my bike after over 20K miles with a BBS02. The HD now has 15K miles on it and the bike has almost 40K. If you upgrade to a Rohloff Speedhub and a large battery you will find that the maintenance and your range will fall into line. I replace my chain twice a year and at the same time flip (or replace) the single Rohloff gear, the total cost is less than $50. With a pair of 2058Wh lithium packs, and a range of over 100 miles I have no problems with range even while touring fully loaded. Another item that will save hundreds of dollars is a Grim Satiator for charging. Batteries should rarely be charged to 100% capacity and never depleted past 20% capacity. Lastly, speed is not determined by the motor but rather by gearing. If you feel the need to ride faster then you need to change the gearing. - photos.app.goo.gl/ADgC6oyPM2gyrCq27

Yes, there is a freewheel cog and a one way bearing inside the bafang mid drives, so you can motor without pedaling or pedal with no motor (same as assist level zero). I now have over 15k + miles in addition to whatever I had on the first display on the motor. I have it disassembled now as I have to replace a broken PAS ring. I should have tore this apart sooner for some grease maintenance. There was no grease only solid chunks of what used to be. Lucky it lasted this long. It's getting a good greasing now before reassembly. BTW, how are you able to accurately tell what your cadence is during your ride as you mentioned?

Turn your motor off & you'll get a crazy workout & probably be in the back on group rides;) You may be able to charge in less time with a faster charger, assuming the BMS allows it. FYI the BBSHD can peak higher than 1400 watts with a 52 volt battery. Good tips about chains and cassettes but every year may be excessive for the average rider that doesn't ride as many miles. If you want a higher top speed get a bigger chain ring (a wider ratio cassette may be needed to keep the hill climbing ability though).

Had some problems with the PAS lagging, but after learning to program the motor with the cable the motor spinn very vell. I am from Norway with long and steep hills, and have problems with my legs. The bike is my every day transporter. The down side is if I am stopped by the Police. They will confiscate my bike and give me a large fine. Here you can only ride 250w 36v PAS bikes. @davebrown9725
@davebrown9725 Год назад
If your setup has chain line issues the lekkie chainrings are essential to get good shifting and minimize chain & cog wear. Also if you are a mountain biker, being able to get better gearing for climbing and slower speeds is important. I was running a 36 with an 11-34 9sp cassette, changed to a 42 with a 11-42 10sp cassette, so slightly lower gears for hills and higher gears for less power use on the flat. The stock stamped steel chainring is just ugly & heavy, alloy rings also have "narrow-wide" tooth profile so they are Far less likely to drop the chain.

No one knows how many miles you can go on a BBHSD?? I am sorry but that is wrong. The correct wording is no one knows for sure because if you maintain it there is little to no upper limit. The Bafang BBSHD is the most common choice of motor for the Solar Ebike race Sun trip which goes from France to China covering 13,000km. Most riders that use a BBSHD will only replace the nylon gear once or twice over the entire 3 month race. It is also recommended to do a grease swap when you get your BBSHD. Jack Butler has some great videos on his race build and the entire race as well.

Ebikes will go 2x farther at 25mph than at 30 with the same battery capacity and less than a 1/4 of what you get at 25 if you go at 35. The drag from the wind resistance is the latest energy expenditure while riding at higher speeds. At 20mph you should get slightly more than 2x what you get by going at 25, also the more hills and the harder you press that throttle the more power you consume. If you want more range either increase the battery size or pedal more so that the mid-drive works less, you could ride a recumbent as the shape would make you save power by having less drag, but that's up to you.
