I’ve been designing for 27 years.. there is nothing wrong with looking like another’s. Done every day all the time. It’s called the fashion food chain

Thank you! I get emails all of the time from people saying "you copied this!" or "they copied you!"... no... unless someone lifts the pattern contents straight up, it's not a "copy" and it infuriates me. I have a pattern in the works right now that looks just like one that was released last week. Clearly she was a couple weeks ahead of me on testers, but sheesh!

omgosh! This was an awesome video! I was putting pattern pieces together from a bag maker and I was thinking how much work goes into creating a bag design. I was thinking about how could I do this? Then, luckily I saw your video series on this subject. Thanks for passing on all of your knowledge to us viewers! I just love your personality and how much fun you have making these videos!

When making more complicated bags (backpacks especially) it is great help to create a paper/cardboard version so you can work out how to assemble the pieces and find mistakes and issues early in the process.

What a great gaming chair. Hubby would be jealous. Hubbie sews and would find your second tower a bonus? Thanks for sharing how to make a bag pattern. I've had something in mind for a while and had NO idea how to translate that into a workable pattern. While I'm an artist and can easily fold boxes in my head, the measurements for consistent reproduction isn't something I'm familiar with. I can easily do a "one and done" but what if I want two? Making a pattern AFTER I've sewn one that works is a little tricky since I really don't take notes on how I made the first one.

This is a great series! Can you do a 'design a bag with me' type of series where you take us through the steps a little more detailed? I've just got into bags and wallets and I really want to design something cute for my iPad but I'm stuck on the 'designing and pattern making' part. I'm not very good with numbers and measurements either and it'd be great to be guided through the process.

I have been meaning to do this. I was going to release a men's wallet pattern this past Spring, but a LOT of similar patterns were released at the same time, so I wanted to give them a bit of runway before I released mine. Mine is meant to be sewn, not left with raw vinyl or leather edges. I do want to make a sort of bowler bag that kind of looks like a wee duffle bag. That would fit the bill here!

How would you work though what materials you use on a bag based on use case/designed use case?
@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz 3 года назад
That's a great follow-on question! I tend to base this on size. A smaller bag won't do well with a super heavy canvas, for example. The way that you wear it and how well formed you want the shape will be will also dictate your interfacings. I will cover this in more detail in the next video, because that's about making the first pattern pieces and starting the testing process.

Hello! I just watched this video and love it! I watched several others of yours before this one, and then was excited to see this - but sad there isn't a part 2 yet. Is that something that you will put out soon? Would love to see how you do that as there is a bag I have had in my head for years and would love to try and make it a reality ;-) Thank you!

I have an ethical question: A maker whose work I greatly admire sells patterns for bags. His stuff is entirely made out of leather, and I'd really like to develop some cloth versions that are the same or heavily inspired by them. Is it okay for me to buy his patterns and then sell the bags I make from them? Or is it only appropriate for me to use his patterns for personal use and gifts?
@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz 3 года назад
Most of the patterns I have purchased will state if you can sell products made from them or not. If you aren't sure, reach out to the pattern maker to ask for clarification.

I get what you're saying about a cross-body bag, but us fluffy folks also wear them. Folks who are fluffy think about how it's going to fall on the hip. An adjustable strap is a good fix, as is the size. It just needs to make sense. So might want to add that caveat.

What problems arise from coping someone bag design and selling it. Can I modify it for sale? Dig your show...
@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz Год назад
If you're intent to design a bag at the very beginning is to copy someone else's design down to the pattern pieces to make your own pattern to sell, it's a huge moral issue. Ethics aside, it's just a crappy and unprofessional thing to do. If you're taking someone's design to try to make a bag from it and the bag isn't hugely unique, I say go for it. I mean, I've been basically working on a Loungefly mini backpack pattern with a friend for a while now. We just won't be marketing it as a Loungefly knockoff or using their name anywhere. Nor did we disassemble any of their backpacks to try to figure out the pieces. THAT would have also been crappy.

Would you say it is unethical to try and recreate another designers bag if it is strictly for personal use and without the intention to sell the recreated design or publicize it?
@fiercekittenz

OUF... I'm going to get DRAGGED for answering this either way - I wouldn't have a problem with it if someone did that with one of my patterns as long as they didn't turn around and sell the knock-off.

How do you resize a purse pattern to be a smaller size
@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz 2 года назад
As long as it's a PDF pattern, just print it out by percentage. Instead of 100%, do 75% or 90%. Edit to add: make sure you adjust expectations for seam allowances, final sizes, and zipper sizing too when doing this!

Very few "original" handbag patterns out there. The majority are just making patterns from bags already on the market.A tote is a tote is a tote, but every designer has a pattern for one.

Is it okay to manipulate someones design and add your design to make it a little bit unique
@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz 3 года назад
I'd say generally, no, from an ethical perspective. HOWEVER, there's only so many styles of tote bags you can make. As long as you do the patterning, designing, and instructions on your own without straight up copying, you are better than most people out there. I've seen a lot of outright pirated stuff.
