Bagging Books Part 5 - Beautiful Vintage Penguin Catalogues + Order Forms
In today's video start bagging up about half of my vintage Penguin Books order forms and catalogues. These truly are beautiful and a delight to behold. These start from the mid 1940's and go right up into this century. I am using a combination of dedicated paperback bags that I bought off Amazon, comic bags, mylar bags and boards, all sorts.

A couple of suggestions from a long time comic collector. It’s always a balancing act between costs and value of the item being bagged. Having said that, I would suggest getting the proper sized backing boards for those magazine size pieces of ephemera. It doesn’t take too much pressure over time or weight depending on how you are planing to store them to have a really good crease from a board that is not wide enough indenting the paper. It would be a shame to go to all that effort only to open years from now and see a huge straight line crease in the ephemera. Also, 3M invisible tape has a nasty habit of tearing and leaving remnants that are really hard to take off if you try and open mylars. I imagine you won’t be opening these too often or at all but I would suggest blue or green painter’s tape on mylars. It is super easy to open and then you have an expensive bag you can use again. Just some thoughts from personal experience.

Understood about the boards and I'll probably swap those out once I know how many I actually need to finish this lot. Not so sure about the tape though. You're right, it can rip and tear after being applied. The coloured tape isn't something that I've seen before but understand where you're coming from. You're right though, these will be staying bagged now until they're eventually sold or I die!

Another great video Jules! Like you, I absolutely love all this ephemera and little extra bits and bobs. Because none of it was intended to last very long I find that, even more so than the books, these are perfect little time capsules. I can just imagine the excitement, in the pre online shopping days, of having the latest Penguin Progress drop through the letterbox! In relation to the postcards and single pieces of paper you didn't get round to bagging - have you considered just using postcard sleeves for those? You can get them in a variety of sizes and materials - either soft plastic (I imagine a bit like the paperback bags) or a much stiffer plastic which might help with the flimsier small pieces of paper. Just a thought. Look forward to seeing the rest!

I like the idea of an album too, if there's one with postcard sized sleeves.

Thanks! I do have some soft postcard sized sleeves but I'm thinking of getting an album which can contain all these small pieces and my London Underground maps. There should be something like this at the London Paperback show as it attached to the epherma fair. 👍

Ah, thanks. I suspect my older mic was on the way out as the volume wasn't quite a crisp as it used to be. Still getting used to the new set up but progress is being made!

I like the new audio and video, in fact I think they are actually better than before, especially the audio 👍

Thanks Chris, it'll take a few videos to get it just right but the biggest jump will be in the videos where I attend shows. It's only small but the overall difference is noticeable 🙂👍

I’ve been watching you for a while now. I’ve learned a lot of valuable information. I recently came into a huge lot of penguin and pan paperbacks. I’m not really sure how to determine or find the value of the books. Do you have any advice for a novice?

It's very complicated but if you can take some pictures of the spines of the books, sorted into numerical order I'd be happy to point out anything rare. Email me at julesburt@gmail.com
