It’s so obvious the Browns wanted him to fail. They only traded for OBJ, signed Austin Hooper and Kareem Hunt, drafted Nick Chubb just to set up Baker to fail 🙄.

Only 2 rookie QBs have started the year after their teams went 0-16. Both number 1 overall picks. Matthew Stafford and Baker Mayfield. Matt Stafford showed promise but only won 2 out of his 10 starts. Baker Mayfield not only won 7 games in his first season, but also broke the rookie passing TD record… on a team that a year before was arguably the worst team ever. I know Herbert broke it a year later and might be considered better, but you can’t deny that in his rookie season he was in a way better situation thank Baker was. Also with Cleveland changing there qb more than once a year since the 2000s. His success there cannot be simply random.

Dear comment section, Nobody is saying the Browns set Baker up to fail by getting him talent on offense (OBJ, Kareem Hunt, etc). They're saying they set him up to fail IN THAT GAME against the Steelers so no one would be mad when they moved on from him. Clearly they tried to win when they were committed to Baker as their QB at first. They just weren't that successful at it, because they're the Browns. The team where free agents go to die. Baker might be a scrub, and he might be an asshole, but no player should be judged solely on their time in Cleveland, haha.

@@timothystuber110 The point is $19 mill in dead cap space won't necessarily ruin a team's ability to build a championship roster. The Browns have Watson at QB at only a $10 million cap number and haven't been asking for a Pro Bowler in return, they've been asking for money and picks. They have a pretty good roster otherwise. So they might've been best served taking what CAR offered prior to the draft: a late rounder and a few million $. Maybe a contender's QB goes down in training camp or the first few weeks and they get a better deal, but at what point was it just not worth drawing the whole thing out? If the Chargers are 4-3 and Herbert goes down, what's that offer going to look like? A 2nd and 4th? (It's what the Panthers gave the Jets for Darnold. I know Mayfield is better, but the timing and money is what changes things) It's an objectively better deal than what was on the table before the draft, but isn't there also value in just being done with the whole mess?

From almost everything I know about the mechanics of throwing stuff; initial shoulder separation is like, the foundation of accuracy and the base of any decent velocity. After rewatching some of these late year games, I'm convinced the Browns were setting up Baker to fail spectacularly. They barely adjusted their offense to account for the guy's shoulder- in fact it often felt like they called more passes as the year progressed. I just get a dirty feeling from the Browns organization like they did their boy seriously wrong. Makes you wonder how long they've been planning Watson.
@camstegames8437
@camstegames8437 2 года назад
They didn't have the power to force him(or anyone) to play through an injury, no team does. You don't 'adjust' the offense you built months planning because someone is injured, if he is THAT injured he has no business playing. They put him out there because he kept telling the world he could run that offense, and do it better than his healthy backup. All he had to do was get the surgery. He WANTED to play, he thought he could tough it out. It was a mistake sure, but only because we now know he couldn't really do it at a high level. Sometimes when you bet on yourself it doesn't work. Telling someone you can do your job, but only if they modify you and everyone else's jobs to fit in with your special requirements...that isn't usually how things work.

@@camstegames8437 I forgot it's entirely up to Baker and the head coach has no say in who's starting. Almost every athlete worth their salt thinks they can play through whatever injury they're dealing with unless it's debilitatingly bad. @@coopers1716 The players union has provisions in the contract with the NFL about forcing a player to play injured. I didn't mean about starting, I meant about the injury. Most players choose to get treatment instead of risking to play through them if they think it will affect their play, and then publicly state the 'teams' or 'doctors' decision to hold them out. Baker may have rubbed some the wrong way sure(there wasn't much player support vocalized after the OBJ thing, that is pretty telling), but everyone leaps to wild outlandish conspiracies. Like everyone on the team just decided to derail their playoff hopes(which they still had up until what week 16?) simply to make someone look bad? Receivers decided to slow down their route so a pass looked inaccurate? Or O-line just decided we don't need that playoff bonus, we are much better off letting our QB get sacked and looking incompetent? I personally REALLY like Baker, I didn't want them to get Watson and keep him instead. However you don't lessen the trade value of someone you are planning to move on from when you still have him under contract. Browns bungled the offseason and panicked when they realized that Baker was too pissed off to come back, but purposefully tanking his trade value mid season? Come on. No one would have stormed the stadium if they moved on. No one is storming the stadium even now when most think he was screwed over and the team grossly overpaid for his replacement.

Having extensively studied the situation with the Chicago Bears over the past few seasons, I find your comment to give me a profound sense of deja vu. You have Stefanski and Baker in the same kind of situation now as Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky were during the last offseason. Trubisky ultimately goes off in free agency like much of Chicago's fanbase wanted, but you can see from last season's record that was a TERRIBLE mistake for them to make. Cleveland's fanbase HAS to account for the very real possibility that Stefanski (who won Coach of the Year his first year just like Matt Nagy did) is the same kind of "system-based fraud" Nagy was. And IF that's true, the Watson "experiment" is guaranteed to end in disaster. Period.

There's also a video of Baker mic'd up, throwing a TD to a non OBJ / Jarvis Landry player, and both players start sulking off the field together, instead of celebrating with their teammates who just scored, while Baker runs up to both of them, pats them on the helmet & tries to cheer them up, saying that he hasn't forgotten about them & that he's still looking for them later in the game. People could plainly see that OBJ was the issue, shortly after her arrived in Cleveland, and no one really questioned it. He had a poor attitude, didn't want to play there, but then they started winning. Of course, once they have a rocky season again, he's magically out of there. I think it's a hatchet job against Baker.

The Browns lost their season opener against the Chiefs. ( They haven't won one since 2004. They are 1-21-1 since 1999. It is a monkey the Browns fans want off their back!) A game they could have, should have won. Baker is injured in week two. The Browns start looking into getting Watson in week four. Before the bye week, the Browns likely already knew they we moving on from the Baker. They had a better dish cooking for the off-season. The Baker should have sat out and gotten his shoulder. He took a risk with staying in the game and is paying the price, it seems.

He's also paying the price for sitting back, waiting for Watson to cross the Browns off his list, and *then* immediately demanding a trade. He tried to stick it to the Browns. Then Watson ended up coming to Cleveland and Mayfield is left in the cold. These locker room problems were clearly much worse than anyone knew. Mayfield's talent isn't big enough to overcome being such a drama queen. Teams don't want to deal with it. So, if the Browns have to eat his contract, it really doesn't matter a ton to them. They got their 26yo franchise QB. They have Myles Garrett and Nick Chubb and Amari Cooper and Kareem Hunt and JOK, etc. They'll be fine. Baker? Not so much. For a 26yo quarterback who you think has a chance to be your future guy, $18m isn't that much money. It's pretty obvious, regardless of whether or not teams want to "do the Browns a favor," he just isn't valued as a starting QB by other franchises.

So many football educated writers, analysts, former players even, that have such bad takes on this situation. The Browns Are. Not. Cutting. Baker. Mayfield. They’re on the books for his $18+ million cap hit either way, unless he’s traded. Andrew Berry will stash him all season, wait for him to sign elsewhere next off-season, and collect a compensation pick for the 2022 draft, before he ever so much as explores the possibility of cutting him. I think Baker can make it awfully uncomfortable for them to do that. But it's a tough game for Baker to play. Because if he makes it uncomfortable in any way that the Browns could say they have cause for cutting him, maybe it would nullify the guaranteed money in the contract from the 5th year option and alleviate that money from the cap situation. Baker has to play this just right where he makes it JUST uncomfortable enough for the Browns where they decide to cut their losses, but not act in any way that the Browns could site as cause for release in a way that they could legally recoup the money.

Come on man take some personal responsibility. Still a good quarterback who deserves a shot in this league, but you can't tell me that inconsistency in play isn't a major factor to the Browns moving on. His rookie year was good, sophomore year was bad, end of third year was good, and last year was bad (and don't blame it all on the injury, if you are hurt there's no such thing as "toughing it out" if you don't play well... that's just playing injured and willingly hurting your team). Not saying the situation was handled well by the Browns completely, but some personal accountability would be nice. I don't think the problem here is that Baker never did anything well. It's that he wasn't consistent from play to play, week to week and season to season. As far as the coaching turnover, a lot of that was based on Mayfield's preferences. By hiring Kitchens as HC, it's not like they were sticking Baker in a system he didn't know. They were promoting his guy that he had success with and the org wanted to keep that continuity. So we can't pretend like all this change happened to him and not *for* him. And some of it might go deeper than performance. We might have to come to terms with the fact that Baker has both good and bad qualities. When things were going well, his face was everywhere and he was talking *all* the sheet. But when the chips were down, his teammates didn't exactly come out swinging to protect him. I said this week 10 last year and people thought I was nuts. You *can't throw without full range of motion.* His protective brace literally stopped that. Berry/Stefanski 100% knew that and shoulda pulled him and had him operated on. Had Baker sat himself, he'd be shown as a bad teammate cuz he was "cleared to play." It was a no-win situation for Baker. Try throwing with your other hand in your pocket to appreciate how vital full range of motion truly is. #10 in QBR in 2020 (#3 second half) 83% completions thru 1st 2 last year (

What we know is that Baker, statistically and "eye-test" wise played fairly well his 3rd season and so did his running backs. So all I can say, without speculating, is that Baker was in a team that was successful and he played somewhat of a key role due to his skillsets. And if your point is true, let's say his running backs are the main reason for their success, then how come they werent used as much the season after?

As far as I'm concerned, Baker is winning this whole ordeal. It seems like the Browns' front office is just really dysfunctional to pay Baker, more than they even thought he was worth, despite not liking him (when they *should* like him), then signing Deshaun Watson to way too much guaranteed money without having any suitors in place to trade Baker to. Not to mention all the coaching the offensive coordinator changes through Baker's tenure with the Browns. At least the Falcons were prepared to trade Matt Ryan to the Colts, the Saints had Jameis as a backup plan, and the Panthers are contempt with Darnold. The Browns have literally no plan, and now Baker is getting $18mil regardless of what happens. It's not like he ever said anything wrong when OBS was ruffling feathers, and it's starting to sound more and more like he was being sabotaged by the coaching staff to give them a reason from public opinion to move on from him, which further validates his comments after his last game against the Steelers. I mean, even Louis Riddick, the commentator for that game, was pointing out the obvious. Plus, why would he play for a team and locker room that apparently doesn't like him anymore? An environment like that speaks volumes to the culture of the Browns and really highlights why they've had such little success.

This entire situation was sad, from what I can see the browns are still the browns and baker will probably become a good name somewhere else. @randy7796 2 года назад
@@sccroobyj4024 because he figured he still had a year insured for him to prove himself in the fifth year option. Plus, it's a mishap on the Browns' side as well. They should have either wanted to keep Baker healthy so they could properly assess him in his fifth year or to keep trade value up since they'd already signed him to that fifth year (being fully guaranteed). They'd be looking better if the last things teams saw regarding Baker was him leading the Browns to a playoff win over the Steelers and almost beating the Chiefs in that same post season, but instead, the last things teams remember is him struggling while injured, the Browns doing him zero favors, and some of his teammates publicly berating him. Baker is still getting his money regardless, so he's winning IMO. Whereas the Browns messed up by not taking care of him and subsequently being unable to get rid of him. Now they're stuck paying $18mil to a player who won't play for them and loads more millions of dollars to another player who might not play for them this season.

People are calling him every name in the book, bringing up every thing he ever did that they don't like, hoping he never plays again... good gosh, what is wrong with these people??? Even if you don't like him, any Browns fan worth a lick ought to be appreciative that Baker brought the Browns out of futility and took them to the playoffs. You can at least say thanks and good luck. I can't see hardly any of the things that people are ripping him apart for being talked about if he had played well last season and went to the playoffs. But also to my point why don't you bench him and if he complains about it and you know he isn't the person for the franchise we would've known this by week 4. Basically it sounds like a big portion the young Cleveland roster bought in hard to the legend of OBJ, and idolized him to a fault. They liked the image of being teammates with him. Then when that was taken away they couldn't let go of the lionized figure they had in their minds, so they blamed Baker, and diminish morale. Idk what the situation was, but the people pretending that it was Baker's fault because of how well OBJ did in LA are full of it. He's like the third option there and he came in on the back end of a season in which the team was already clearly a juggernaut. Defenses were dedicated to stopping Kupp (who is better than OBJ is and possibly ever was) and had no film with OBJ on the offense, so of course OBJ is gonna be able to get the ball more. They also clearly force fed him the ball early in games so he wouldn't throw a fit. He isn't a number one. Hasn't been in a long time. Really debatable if he ever was. Hands are a big part of the WR game, but not everything. We just saw that one clutch one-handed catch and assumed his greatness. In reality he choked away their playoff run and is probably the reason Eli doesn't have a third ring. His ring has a massive asterisk on it for going there when they were basically already clinched for the playoffs. He'll never win one playing all season for a team as a number one. He just isn't the guy.
