Thanks for the review, and it's also really nice to see you responding to various questions. Found a few answers to questions I had myself actually, so thanks for that as well!
Thanks for the follow up, just what I was wanting to hear. Also thanks for swapping the chrome third brake with a tinted, my OCD was going off the scales on the first vid.
what unites ppl with trucks is the OCD lol. I have a 2017 tacoma. I cannot stand it being dirty inside and out. OP was complaining about the how easily the cover scratches and that is something I will take into account. Great Vid!
I just had my MX4 with Bak Box2 toolbox installed on GMC today. The store wanted to sell me the G2 saying it was just as good because the MX4 was on backorder but I didn't like g2 being made of lighter material and having to open it to close tailgate since the seal overlaps. I love look and function of MX4 but anything is better than the raggedy bowed torn vinyl Lund cover I had previously. Thanks for honest review.
I have what I’m sure is a Bak on my 2014 F-150 that I purchased from Ford when I bought it in 2014. The roof does have a couple dings where I’d parked it under an Oak one night in a campground and acorns struck it. It’s not that bad at all. Anyway, I loved and still love the cover. I’d spray it with 303 in the warmer months to prevent any fading. Whether it would have faded or not without it? I cannot say but it hasn’t faded any over the last 8+ years. It does have a few scratches though. Be nice if they made a touch up stick Now, last week I bought a Tundra 1794 model that came with the same cover. It looks sharp and they’re so easy to raise and lower. I do plan on removing it during summer months to put topper on for camping trips. How nice it can be removed and replaced so easily
Thanks for the honest review. I have been doing research for my Denali. I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Your review is very open and honest. When you are spending almost a grand on a cover it should hold up to the "day to day" expected use and wear and tear. Anything less, the company deserves to go out of business.
You may want to try some black paste shoe polish in one of those flat cans. Rub a little on, let it soak in and then rub off the excess with a soft cloth. It probably won't get it all out but probably look anywhere from 40 to 80 percent better.
good video. Got lucky today and picked up a used cover. My old 2013 bakflip is literally falling apart. The part that you mentioned about falling off is an issue for my find. gonna use some stainless screws and jb weld to put make together.
I have one on my 2016 , so its 4 years old and i love it.... a few scratches , but i am to blame (not the cover). My concern is security ? If someone can slip a slim-Jim type tool under and catch the pull cord to lock???? I cant find any videos on that or how to prevent it? Cheers.
The extang installs in an interesting way. Doesn't seem very "locked down." It is kind of cool how simple it is though. Also, it isnt as sleek if you care about that
@Heather I really prefer the low profile look over the other option but seems like they’re more prone to leaking from all the videos/feedback I’ve seen. I’ll research and review other brands prior to dropping 1k on one of these. Thank you.
I put a Bakflip HD on my 2010 f150. After 2 years the top layer separated from the core material. Eventually holding rain water and causing the entire surface to lift away. Though I didn’t have much leaking, if any, I can’t stand the edge seals. Two weeks ago I sold my truck. By then, most of the cross members had separated and corroded away from the shell. Two things NOT to do with it; don’t let the top slam shut, and if you live in a hot climate like I do, don’t power wash it.
So what your saying is Handle with care I mean it's only 900 bucks! And don't shoot the piss outta it with a pressure washer! Can I use purple power to clean it? Thanks in advance
Love how there is only 2 sided tape and about 7 cheap Rivets to hold the locking bar/release mechs on. I had one in the middle fall off several years ago and finally the main one at the tailgate almost came off… needless to say I had to repair that with putting new tape and a ton of rivets! It will not be falling off before the truck dies.
Great review, I’ve seen mixed reviews on how to properly shut the tailgate, some people say (and manufacturer) shut the tailgate first lift the cover and lock the cover on top of the tailgate and Ive seen plenty of others who just shut the tailgate closed while the cover is on it’s closed position already, have you had any issues with just closing the tailgate shut on to the cover? Like any damage to the end of the cover? Thanks!
I’ve had mine for 3yrs and one of the locking tracks separated from the panel. Contacted BakFlip and they sent me a brand new set of panels. 5 yr warranty is very awesome ! I had some scratches on mine also so I’m gonna see if I can get the top of the panels line X finished on my replacement. Very happy with their customer service
Hi nice review and sweet tail lights and 3rd brake light. Are those vinyl wrap tinted or are they aftermarket lights? Please let me know, im interested into getting mine done. Thanks.
They are smoked lights made by Recon. I've had some leaking issues with one of the tail lights, so I'm not thrilled with them but they look great and a pretty bright
Only real issue i see with that is it scratches easy. The struts that hold up the cover is fine just thread lock it like you said and the is whatever just glue it
As of 5/27/2024 They are now $1,199.99 from Real Truck. My Gator FX3 Broke at the 2nd hinge. I purchased it January 2021 (It only has 2 years of warranty) The MX4 has 5 years of warranty.
Hey thanks for a nice review. My mx4 rubber cushions (just installed) when opened fully only rest on rear window. Do you know if this has been an issue worth window breaking? Thanks
As far as security and the knife test everyone talks about, how about someone using a stiff piece of brazing rod with a hook on it to slide between the tail gate and the top to pull on the cable. My neighbor opened his leer 350 with a screwdriver!
I know this is an older video, but in regards to it getting scratched easily, give it a good cleaning, tape everything off, and hit it with some rattle can bed liner. I did that to my scratched up bed cover (different brand) and it worked perfect.
Very good video bro, im looking into this product for my new Tundra, it looks pretty hardy, but don't like the cheap quality of the kickstands, and the scratchability of the top decklid, I guess you need to have a light touch with this product, if you want it to last?
Yes. It is a little more challenging then just unclipping.there are some threaded knobs you will have to undue and then it should pop out if you want it off.
For the rubber that goes around outside of the backflip, I had to silicone the ends that fit over the aluminum channel. Another problem is my tailgate would not open and there’s no way of opening the backflip without destroying the rubber seal that goes along the tailgate. Would I buy it again absolutely not.🤷♂️
Are the panel skins on this tarp aluminum.. ? Has anyone looked at the extang covers with the Frp panel skins. And is the frp a better choice than the aluminum that can tent or scratch in this case.
I like that you can close the gate while it's closed. annoying when you pay $800 lol. wait til you see the price now almost 1100. I think they upgraded the top so that its now made of pure gold and diamonds..
I have had one on a 20 F 150 for ~ 13 months. Wolud not buy again. All three cross members buldged and went out of channel. I redrilled/placed screws in different positions and that was fixed. The suppoerts never stay in place in open or bed mode. Finally, both of the rear corner plastic insert caps broke and I had to jerry rig epairs with GG. I have had other brands and none were perfect but this is the worst to date IMO.
i had the g2 for 4 years. it was fine for 3 years then somehow water started getting inside the cover making it really heavy to fold up and the rubber hinges started to fail and water was getting into the bed. let me talk about the aluminum they use, because 1 hail storm and the cover was dented to the points where it was an eye soar. for $1000 it should have lasted more then 4 years
I have the G2 which security-wise is the same as this one. There is a way for theives to open it fairly easy. I did it already to see if it would work. I got a hanger and shimmed it under the rubber and pulled the cord that releases the last panel. I don't keep anything of value in there so for me it's no biggie.
Do you find it gets heavier as it gets older and more water trapped in the panels? On my second one and the wife can't flip it open on her own anymore.
Probably the fibermax or equivalent. If there was a way to open it without lowering the tailgate (and still being theft resistant) that would be nice. When I have my trailer hooked up, I often find myself having to slightly open the tailgate to get into the bed
I have this bed cover on my 2018 silverado, after about a year the rubber on the first fold started splitting, and within 2 years it was completely. split across. my main issues is Bakflip does not sell any type of replacemant parts for this, so you basically have to go out and buy a new one...
Does it rattle or make any noise when completely folded up? How about when down? How many inches of space does having this install block off even when Ford is completely up
Great questions. I haven't noticed any rattling. The only thing would be those little support rods pop out of their cradles on really rough roads. I would say there is about 6 inches of lost bed space when it's folded up.
The biggest drawback is that you lose visability. The stabilizing rods keep it pretty secure. I think it may take up slightly less space horizontally than a roll up.
Your rear water leakage into the bed may be through your tailgate step; which was an issue that I had. Rain etc was entering through the top of the tailgate/tailgate step into my bed. And then freezing where I couldn't open the tailgate. I also had a Bedrug installed.
You are correct. It is made of 2 layers of aluminum with foam or something in between. Thats why I recommended the fiber max because it is a different finish. A little more glossy but not as thin
Thanks for the honest in depth review. I'm in the market for one and this definitely helps. I'll look into those other models you mentioned. Thanks again.
Is this an older model of the MX4 or a different model? I was under the impression the MX4 has 4 bigger sections instead of 3 like the one on the video.
I do see some 4 panel ones in their website. I'm not sure of the difference. Mine is a short bed (5.5 ft). Maybe the longer bed (6.5 ft) have 4 panels instead of 3
I know this video is 5 years old now, but I'm still going to throw my two cents in about the F1 cover he talks about towards the end of the video. Yes it has an amazing gloss finish and is fiberglass reinforced...but it's junk. It looks good at first but a year later it's dull and the surface actually cracks and splits. I've replaced 3 lids under warranty for this reason in a matter of 2 1/2 years. I went to warranty this last F1 Lid and they recommended the MX4 lid this time around instead. I just installed it this morning and to be honest...I don't have any faith that it will be any better. I guess time will tell. They say their F1 is their top of the line cover...it's garbage.
Thanks for the follow up review. to this date do you still have the cover? And how has it held up? Im thinking about ordering one soon and i just wanna know how long it will last
I do still have it. I don't think anything has changed since I did the 18 month review. Which is a good thing I guess. So going on 4 years or so and its holding up pretty well.
I've had my BakFlip MX4 about the same length of time and I've had the same issue with the paint finish wearing off that you report. One of the plastic clips broke (male portion) after having the cover about two months and BakFlip wouldn't honor the warranty. I've yet to find a clip anywhere that fits the female part correctly. I used blue loctite on those rods. They don't come loose anymore but those flimsy plastic cradles they rest in when not being used are junk. I fabricated two out of copper pipe clamps and dipped them in Plasti-Dip. No more issue. For the money they charge for these covers, they should offer better hardware, paint job and stand behind their product. All minor issues and the cover still performs fine but it could fantastic if just a little more care went into the manufacturing of these things.
Had one on my '14 f150. Never was completely flat, had a hump I would say in the middle, always leaked and the top surface did not hold up. Also the top plack coating separated from the cover itself producing an air bubble almost. Very obnoxious since I spent $1k on that thing. Extremely dissatisfied with it
What brand / which bed cover is on the green truck in the early part of this video? It looks like it is even lower profile than the backflip especially near the side rails. Thanks!
Ive owned mine since 2012 at this point it leaks everywhere. Customer service has given me the run around for replacement rubber seals.Im trying again today. Its is heavy takes 2 people to fold back .If the manufacture wont help me Ill buy a new version but not from bakflip.
It sounds like you got a good deal on it. It's not a bad bed cover by any means. It's just not perfect. Mine is still holding up quite well. I think it's been about 4 years now
@@NSQGarage I bought one today, but am considering returning and going for the f1 after seeing your review and the scratching. How is it holding up, does it look like its all beat up or is it still decent looking? Also, are there any leaks on the seals? Thanks for your help on the review.
@@ericanderson668 it's still holding up well. It doesn't look too bad. It has a couple small "dents" and a couple small scratches. No real water issues. Some comes in near the gap in the tailgate, but I don't think a bed cover can really solve that
@@NSQGarage thanks for the reply! I'm trying to decide between the MX$ and F!, but I've heard the F! delaminates whereas the Mx4 Scratches, lolol. Decisions decisions!
That's a good question. I've never had any issues so I would assume everything was working properly. I feel like the flow is a light trickle, not a ton of water to freeze solid
