Video #280: Mistakenly, most clayers think this is because they have left their beads in too long... or that they had set the wrong temperature on the dial. But most often it is because their tiny oven is having temperature fluctuation issues, which can be easily solved by doing a few simple things. Watch this video to see how I have set up my clay dedicated toaster oven to provide a more even and consistent heat. Cindy Lietz More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?...

Since it's now summer (& I've yet to drag out & reinstall the AC) I was looking for an alternative to oven baking my pieces as it heats really up an already stifling house. Thanks SO much for all the great & detailed info!

Thank you for this tip :-) I was given a few dozen 6" tiles so that I can use for putting my pieces onto for backing so might clean up some more to place onto top like yours as I like to keep my pieces in the oven to cool down as I have noticed my pieces are stronger if left in there after baking :-) the extra tiles will add as an extra buffer zone to keep it warmer longer during the winter months. I love watching your RU-vid as you have so many handy tips :-) thank you for sharing :-)

Interesting tips. I just used some old ceramic tile I had left over from a freecycle years ago now without knowing it helped anything. I haven't had any issues though probably because I bought a tall rotisserie style toaster oven so I could do larger pieces like bowls and vases as well. - Heidi

I just started working with polymer clay and the first batch I baked burned so I googled you tube and found you. I didn't have any ceramic tile laying around but did have some thin fire bricks for our wood stove. I layered them in and around and found that my temp stabilized. Using a tent helped too. Thanks for your videos, they are sooooo helpful.

Hi. I saw on one of your channels you said to bake polymer clay for 60 minutes. I'm baking small 2, 3 and 4 mm beads and some are 2 - 4 mm balls, as well as tiny little sprinkles to put on whipped topping charms. Should those be cooked for 60 minutes as well? I bake in the same oven as you...the kitchenaid countertop convection KCO223CU. Thanks for your advice, April LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!

Hi Cindy, I appreciate your video. I am new to using polymer clay, and so I am learning so much. I got a Black & Decker toaster oven for baking my clay, and I bought a oven thermometer from Kroger (Everyday Living brand). I noticed when I am heating up my toaster oven or my home oven, the thermometer is reading -25F then what my dial says. I have a really hard time with the toaster oven getting it at 275F because of this. I previously went to Home Depot and bought some tile, about same size as yours, but I only got 2 as I was thinking to use it for my work space and bake tray. How many tiles would you recommend for placing on the top of my oven? Also, do you have any advice on what to do about my thermometer? I am not sure if it is faulty or not, or how to fix the issue.

If I use a ceramic tile, a tin foil tent and bake polymer clay in the correct temperature as stated in the package, would it still work even though there is no bake option nor a temperature dial? My toaster oven only has the timer dial on it.

Hi Cindy, I read down quite a few comments looking for an answer first. My question is, if I'm going to use a new convection toaster oven, do I still need the tile (I have it readily available)? Also, there is obviously no problem using paper products in a toaster oven or it would not be recommended. Can I assume that's the case then by the top or bottom heating elements? I believe that is cardstock type paper only, is that correct? I've seen a "bead holder" made from cardstock folded to look like an accordion to bake beads on but I was concerned about having "paper near a heating element"...Thank you :)

Even with the temperature fluctuations, would you still recommend using a toaster oven over a regular oven? I used to use my old oven as a kiln and I never felt like it caused problems for the oven or for my food because I baked clay projects pretty infrequently. But I just got a nice, new oven that I don't want to ruin so I'm looking into toaster ovens as an alternative... especially since I make miniatures.

Hi fonda hughes, the ears and tails are burning on your sculptures not because they are small but because the heat from the element is too direct. If you tent your piece or bury it in cornstarch or baking soda, you will find they do just fine. Remember the other things from the video and your next piece should turn out much better. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

hello cyndi.. i want to ask if do i need to preheat the oven toaster first before i place my project?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi bella lobitania it kind of depends on your oven. If it spikes a lot while heating up, then don't put your polymer clay in there until the temperature is pre-heated and stable. But if it just slowly heats up, then it's OK to put them in while it is getting up to temp. Either way, don't set your timer until your oven has preheated, so that you know they have baked for the full amount of time. Do use an oven thermometer though. Most ovens are not the temp that the dials says.

I don't have any ceramic tiles lying around but I have a ceramic cup. Can I use that instead? I don't plan on baking large items, just small ones that would fit in it.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 9 лет назад
dream_keeper88 That should work, as long as the cup is heat resistant. You could easily tent the cup wit a piece of tinfoil as well, so it might be a good solution for you. But of course you will need to test it on something that is not super important first.... just to be sure you're getting a proper cure. Let us know how it works for you!
@cindylietz7299
@cindylietz7299 12 лет назад
Do you have an oven thermometer? I would worry about baking at such an low temp for such a short time that your clay will not be cured properly. If you're using Premo clay it should be baked at 265F-275F for a min of 30 min. For a harder and more professional finish, I bake mine for an hour no matter the size.

PolymerClayTutor Hi Cindy! I used this tip, which apparently is called a "heat sink" and it did work great! My temps stayed really consistent & my beads didn't burn or brown. Also, apparently this saves electricity compared to the oven cycling off & on a lot without it. I was reading some comments on another video and a user was saying that they did everything, tent, use an oven thermometer etc & their beads still burnt. Maybe their oven thermometer is faulty. That's not unheard of. As for me, I've been playing around with PC for several years now & I felt pretty confident about my skills. Now I realize that I'm still missing basic info (like this)! I think I'm going to go ahead & order your beginner's course. Because although strictly speaking I'm not a beginner, I am sure I will still learn a few things. Thanks again! ~now Back to the Beads :D~

Hi Jacqueline Gomez Sounds like your cardstock got too close to the elements or your oven was hotter than it was supposed to be. What you should do instead is fin a foil pan as a lid. Watch this video it shows what I mean: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3dhqyHEoafA.html

I just bought some Fimo Soft yesterday. To my surprise the package says "Do not heat above 130C/265F". It's been a couple of years since I have bought or used clay; previously it said temp no higher than 230F. I am making heart ornaments, Fimo Soft over aluminum foil armature. The clay is roughly 1/8" thick over the foil; at the top is a hanger which is pure clay. It's 1/8" at it's thin point, 1/4" at the base. The fimo package no longer gives any direction as to baking time. Do you have any input about baking time and temp? Would you bake something like this for 60 minutes with the insulating tiles as you have shown? Thanks.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi Rebecca McCartney I am not surprised by the packaging changes. Over the years the way we bake polymer clay has changed and so some of the manufacturers have changed their advice as well. I bake Premo and Fimo for 1 hour, no matter the thickness, but at the temp recommended on the pack. And yes I would use the insulating tiles as well. Check out my channel... there are lots of videos on baking and more being added all the time that should help. Good luck!

I need help! I just can't seem to get the toaster oven to work without wasting a lot of material. I spent the entire weekend trying to perfect this method with all your tips but ended up ruining more than I saved. Is there safety issue with using my stove oven that I cook with? I know polymer clay is non toxic but I just wandered since I've never heard of anyone using their kitchen oven to bake it.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi Veola Sutherland are you using an oven thermometer? Your oven may be a lot hotter than your dial says it is. Also, it is not a problem to bake in your regular oven if you want. That is what most people do until they get a separate oven. If you find there is a plasticy smell in your oven after baking, then you may want to clean your oven before baking food in there. You can also bake inside a roasting pan with a lid, if you don’t want to have to clean your oven all the time. The manufacturers say that the product is safe to use, and it is certified non-toxic, so it should be fine.

@karenlal9242

you can make one out of aluminum foil baking pans, and tea light candles underneath (2 is good). Or a pop can with 1 tealight there is a video on youtube about it, but I find the baking pans work best.
@Alicecoopper
@Alicecoopper 5 лет назад
You can boil water in a pot and put a ceramic plate on top of it, then put a paper and use some corn starch or baking soda to cover your pieces. Then cover the plate with the lid of the pot and start boiling the water. Try to maintain the temperature and boil for 45 min to 1h. Even if you over bake, it shouldn't be a problem, it won't burn, or it is less likely to burn out your art work.

yes I take on board your comments but if a novice polymer clay accidently burned the clay it then will be toxic and will fill your oven and kitchen with toxic fumes So it would be better advice to tell students to get a oven specific for your polymer clay projects ( I do watch your tutorials and I must say they are great no offensive hopefully taken with the above-mentioned comments k
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 8 лет назад
+Kathleen Anderson Yes it is always best to be cautious and that of course is my advice. There has been much talk about burning clay being 'toxic' but there is conflicting information about the smoke being just an 'irritant' rather which can bother small pets and people with breathing issues, but that it is not actually 'toxic'. From a logic point of view, think about this... polymer clay has been around for more than 50 years and many people have had the 'opportunity' to burn it... if the burnt clay was toxic, wouldn't have there been many injuries/illnesses resulting in many law suits over the years and a banning of the product all together? I have not heard of a single incident in my years of doing polymer clay, so my concerns are very slim. But if you or anyone else has any concerns, a dedicated oven with good ventilation would be the best way to go.
@kathleenanderson5399

I've never heard that one.
