Balance 442
Hudson Yacht and Marine Co LTD: Ju Jiang Village, Shi Jing, Nan An, Quan Zhou, Fu Jian Province, 362343, China
Balance Catamarans: 2 Marine Dr. Paarden Eiland, Cape Town, 7405, South Africa.
Boekenhoutskloof Swartland Syrah : Boekenhoutskloof Winery, Excelsior Road, Franschhoek, 7690, South Africa
Today we are going to
1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels
2. Do a full tour asking, "What would Sylvia say?"
3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier
4. Have a look at the used market for 3-5 year old comparables
5. And finally give it a "Dave Score" and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts.
From high above Vancouver, we fly west across Pacific all the way to China and the Hudson Yacht and Marine Co. yards in Ju Jiang Village, the home of last week's Future Yacht, the HH52. From here we continue Southwest all the way down to South Africa and the home of Balance Catamarans in Cape Town. Finally, we hope inland to this week's wine pairing at the Boekenhoutskloof Winery.
Wine: Boekenhoutskloof Swartland Syrah www.boekenhout...
1993: The farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
1996: The first vintage of Boekenhoutskloof was produced from a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that is still in production today.
1997: The first Porcupine Ridge was launched. It was a Sauvignon Blanc, with a label incorporating a pen and ink drawing by the late acclaimed wildlife artist Zakkie Eloff.
2002: The first vintage of The Chocolate Block was produced. From this 2002 vintage, 15 barrels were bottled and released in 2003
2003: The Wolftrap brand was launched. Even though no evidence of wolves has ever been found on Boekenhoutskloof, we created this wine to remind us of the mysteries and legends of days gone by.
2007: Marc Kent became Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in recognition for his unswerving winemaking excellence.
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2018
Grapes for the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah are from selected parcels of the finest Syrah planted on the estates own Swartland farms, namely Porseleinberg and Goldmine. These vineyards grow on the rocky bedrock of decomposed Mica-Schist, a unique terroir expressed by the concentrated and structured wines.
The Syrah grapes are all hand-harvested into lug boxes and transported to Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek for vinification. Grapes are cooled prior to been transferred to tulip-shaped concrete tanks for fermentation.
A combination of partially de-stemmed and whole-bunch (40%) clusters ferment spontaneously with minimal sulphur additions and no acidification. A soft délestage is performed 2-3 times per day. Once maceration is complete, the skins are basket pressed and gravity-fed into traditional 2 500L Austrian oak foudres and 600L demi-muids for further ageing of up to 18 months.
Dark fruit dominates an intense, brooding nose with its black currant, black olive, tar and graphite aromas. Luscious, sweet red and dark berries follow through onto an exceptionally complex palate with rich flavours of ripe plums, black cardamom and hints of ground pepper and sweet tobacco.
A serious core of cured meat and green olive tapenade add to the attractive savoury character of the structured mid-palate, with notes of milk chocolate coating the mouth. The wine is supple, medium to full bodied, with beautiful concentration, silky-textured tannins and vibrant acidity to balance. Red fruit and spice linger on the finish with classic nuances of white pepper and lively garrigue adding a Provencal character.

I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for producing it. I have been following the Seawind 1370’s development, and then discovered the Balance 442. I am really leaning now towards this boat. In the process of convincing my better half, as she is still hesitant. They are three years out currently, so we need to make a decision soon. Seawind is currently at January of ‘28 delivery. So both are selling extremely well.

Hi Mark. If cost is not a limiting factor, the Balance is your boat…hands down. The 442 feels much larger than the 44’ length would imply. The finish is just so outstanding. At the Miami show, I started on the Balance 442 and then did the rest of the show. I then came back to the 442, quite sure that I would no longer be as impressed. It was the opposite! By that point the quality, engineering and design strengths of the Balance were even MORE impressive to me. The ventilated glass panels are outstanding and beautifully integrated. They are more efficient and will last longer than the walk on flex panels. The real wood veneer finishes are much warmer than the comparatively spartan finishes of other cats. The real glass windows will never graze. The helm position gives you your cake and lets you eat it too. When up, it has wonderful sight lines with wind-in-your-hair thrills. When down, you have a fully instrumented helm set up in perfect shelter with a comfortable seat and great visibility. The interior nav station ( something I am not usually a fan of ) gives an outstanding feel of control, comfort and visibility. They offer a power code/A-sim furler in addition to the regular sails. Their hulls use heat molded foam core to ensure the exact right amount of resin for the max strength and min weight. The hulls are not pure vinylester as the Seawind is, but they use vinylester on the external layers, which is where you need it to prevent osmosis, and polyester on the inner layers where it works just great. Phil and his team have also developed a long standing partnership with Integrel Power Solutions and offer an integrated and optimized electric power package with two options: the first uses the Integrel alternators to provide advanced 9kW charging off each engine to a properly sized lithium battery bank in the most efficient way possible. The second now puts a very low profile electric motor into the drive sequence ( already fitted into the Balance design) that gives you, A. 15kW charging per Eng. B. Regen when sailing (just added) C. Electric drive at 20-30 kWs per side. Of course, Balance boats only use one fuel. No need for propane as all appliances are electric and the battery bank is sized for even extended A/C use without a generator set pounding away. They are even offering a bow thruster on the new 580, which, when combined with a DockMate wireless joystick, could just save your marriage when docking. Lol. If I sound like a Balance sales guy, I assure you, I am not. I’m just a deep geek who appreciates outstanding quality, design and engineering when I see it. Last, but certainly not least, when you e-mail Phil, the owner, you get a personal response almost immediately. This has happened to me on two occasions now. If you would like to geek out even more, I did an interview with Kirk and Cat, who should be splashing their new 526 any time now. Kirk is an engineer and taught me about resins, fibres, and heat molded foam core. He is wonderful to chat with and I’d be happy to introduce you. If you want to chat with Phil at balance, I’d be happy to introduce you. Just drop me a note at Dave@NavalGazingatCampDavid.com. All the very best on your desision journey! Please stay in touch. If possible I would LOVE to interview you and your wife when you are settled aboard and walk through your buying experience. D.

We have been looking at the Balance for over a year and I have to say that I am now super impressed with the HH Cats. It's as if a builder from the future jumped backward in time and delivered a far superior product to choose from. Their Electric EcoDrive option, more than double amount of solar, shaft drives, folding transom, the better build materials... The more we learn the more we realize it is not even a fair contest anymore. That HH is remarkable. Great video series, we have been enjoying it!

Very nice boat. Good layout and quite ideal combination of performance and accommodation in that size range. And very solid since its Balance. As a wild card in that size, maybe it could be worth looking at Nautitech 44 as well. I was positively surprised when I saw Yachting World review of that boat. Of course it is not Balance or Outremer, but they say it sails quite well for a boat with fixed keels. Edit: oh. I just noticed that you already covered Nautitech 44 😅

Hey SK. I am actually going to take a second look at the Nautitech 44 soon. I saw it in a fantastic walnut finish and toured it with the product manager. It made me think twice. Having said that, Nautitech’s upcoming 48 or their older 542 would be the only ones that I would look at in the line for my application. Regardless, NONE of them compare to your new baby!!!

Nice boat. I wish I could afford it. If you want to convince Sylvia to go Sailing, If you have not done it already. I would start by a one or two weeks charter in the BVI . If she is not convince after that, well you will have to change plan. Good luck.

Nice looking boat. But I would recommend that before you decide on your boat, you take one for sail in good and bad weather. A helm that may look great in good weather may not be so good in bad weather and you may look at this differently if you are day sailing or doing long passages where you may not have a choice in sailing into bad weather. The Balance helm looks great for day sailing and good weather, but for bad weather I am not so sure. How do you gain access to the winches in bad weather? The versa helm is down and you have your canopy cover on, so how do you gain access to the winches without having to open the canopy? not a good design from this aspect.
@navalgazingatcampdavid
@navalgazingatcampdavid Год назад
Hey Sandy. Thanks for your thoughts!! It’s a point that was also brought up by another viewer. Outremer have solved this on the new 52 with a transfer block and a lower winch that allows you to control the lines with the canopy closed. Having said that, I have noted that helm position is one of those everlasting discussions that will never actually be resolved. Lol. Thanks again!!
@kirkb3473
@kirkb3473 Год назад
Hi Sandy, I've sailed a few thousand miles in all types of weather conditions on the bigger version of this boat (482 & 526) with the versa-helm and it is actually not an issue at all. If you think about how often on a passage you are actually trimming the sails, it is 0.00001% of the time. If you do need to make an adjustment, you pop up and do it for a minute. But what you do have with the pivoting helm at the lower position, is a totally protected forward facing helm seat with complete unobstructed visibility. Like the upper, the lower helm also has throttle controls, a chart plotter, MFD's, autopilot, and a comfy backrest for those long watches. Now if you feel you absolutely need that protection at the upper helm Balance will build you a canopy and full enclosure for the raised helm position. Of the 100 or so people who already own or are int the process of building a Balance 442/482/526/580, not one that I know of has elected to do so as they feel it's not necessary, but everybody is different and that's cool if it's a dealbreaker...but I'd suggest giving it a try, you might like it!

@@kirkb3473 Thanks so much for this Kirk. I was just about to write Andrew at Balance and ask him for a similar explanation. I was certain that there was one, given just how well these craft are thought through and the level of quality on every boat I have seen. I appreciate you jumping in!

Just a thought from someone who has never sailed a yacht before but if you had the helm down and it was raining wouldnt windscreen wipers be a good call to help with visibility? Didnt see any on the walk through? Amazing videos by the way!
@navalgazingatcampdavid
@navalgazingatcampdavid Год назад
Hey Paul. Thanks for watching and especially for taking the time to comment!! You know, you make a very good point. None of the cats that I have seen have wipers on the forward windows. Or defoggers, for that matter. Moody has the defoggers on their monohull deck saloons, and Garcia might have some solution on their Explocat , but that is about it. If you don’t mind, I will add that to a Naval Gaze in the future. Thanks again!!
@paulfreimond1267
@paulfreimond1267 Год назад
I don't mind at all. The portofino should be at 100 on the dave score after watching the barefoot doctors completely change the design to suit there needs. I think an extra category for safety should be added in on the videos which is one thing that's overlooked in almost every catamaran video I watch.

@@navalgazingatcampdavid I have no idea... "Boeken" mean books, "hout" means wood and "kloof" means gap. Anyway, it was really funny how you pronounced it. My native language is Dutch and "boekenhoutskloof" certainly is Afrikaans which is an old kind of Dutch that comes from the colonists in South Africa.
