If you are looking for a great minnow pattern to work in and around shoreline structure give one of my Balanced Minnows a shot.
This particular version is targeted at imitating fathead minnows a species that is widespread across North America.
Balanced flies such as such as this one work well suspended beneath one of my Quick Release Indicators in and around shoreline weeds and amongst weed pockets where fathead minnows love to hang out. This pattern, as with all balanced flies, is also an excellent cast and retrieve option. Using a floating, Midge Tip, clear intermediate or hover line in conjunction with a 4-6 slow strip-pause retrieve, trout and other game fish find the seductive jig of a stripped balanced fly tough to resist.

Hi Phil, I just discovered balanced flies and your videos have been super helpful. I can't wait to chase fish in Alaska this summer with these new patterns!

Hi, thanks for the kind words regarding my video. Balanced flies worked well for me when I was last in Alaska, fishing the lakes around the Mat-Su region. Cheers, Phil

Can I use other type of soft hackle to replace the schlappen? for example, hen cape? Thanks!
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely. You can use the glue from any feather such as a standard saddle hackle. I like the fine-fibered flue from these types of feathers for the tails on almost all of my micro leeches. Cheers Phil.

Hi Phil, this style of fly has changed my lake fishing.for ever! I have fished a Balanced Damsel, Balanced Baitfish, and a Balanced style leech/ Woolly Bugger down here in New Zealand the last 18 months with great success. I now fish this style exclusively. These flies just flatout hunt!

Hi glad to hear you of the success you are having with balanced flies. Like you, they have been a gamechanger of sorts for me. Jig flies too for that matter. More balanced flies coming shortly so stay tuned! Thanks, Phil

I caught a nice rainbow on this yesterday. Is the hackle also marabou?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing

Frank Cada Hi Frank, the hackle is schlappen. The recipe is posted in the comments section of this video. Thanks, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing I caught 4 Rainbow from 18 to 24 inches (measured) yesterday in about 15 minutes on the Balanced Minnow. I had a M&M Leech above that they ignored. Big can be better. High winds were creating a mud line close to shore. When the mud line moved out in deeper water the bite stopped. Fish were gorged on minnows right after ice out. Bad weather means good fishing!

Great video, Phil. What is the approximate length of the pin you're using?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing 5 лет назад
Thanks Barney, I am glad you enjoyed my video. The pins are sequin pins that I get from Michael's. You can find them in the stichery section. They come in either silver or gold and are approximately 1/2" long. Thanks, Phil

Where do you find the bulk pack of daiichi 4640 hooks? I can only find packs of 15 online. Awesome patterns by the way. Balanced flies have been a real game changer---thanks for sharing.

Hi, glad to hear you are enjoying my videos and having success using balanced flies. They, as you can probably tell, have had a big effect on my tying. You can get 100 packs of the Daiichi 4640's from Canadian Llama. Here is a direct link to the page on their website, www.canadianllama.com/daiichi-fly-hooks/jig-hooks/4640-heavy-wire-jig-hook-60-degree-100-pack/?referrer=CNWR_33041533934888. If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to ask. Best of the season, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing I have another question if you don't mind. When you were going after Lahontans at Pyramid. Which hooks/size were you using for your chironomid patterns? Thankyou
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing 5 лет назад
@TroutHowler, I have only fished Pyramid a couple of times. We do sell a number of our chironomid patterns that we have on our online Stillwater Fly Fishing Store. Sizes 12-10 seem to be the most popular, Beadhead Chironomid Bomber, Chan's Chironomid Pupa, Chromie, Black Holographic Pupa, are three that come to mind. You can also check out the Reno Fly Shop as they are probably the closest fly shop and spend a lot of time on Pyramid over the season. Thanks Phil

Hi Phil, what would the overall length of this fly be? Thinking it would be a great tube fly too.
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing

Hi, the finished length of this fly is about 1.5" long. It would be a good candidate for a tube fly. Thanks, Phil

Phil, can you give us a stickleback version of this pattern? Curious to see what you would do...
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing 5 лет назад
Hi Chuck for the brook stickleback I would use something similar, perhaps a bit more gold and change the eye color. Are you thinking a brook stickleback or three spine? I will be doing additional videos on the all-white version, White Satin, and the Perch version. Cheers, Phil
@charlesloftis2920
@charlesloftis2920 5 лет назад
Brook stickleback, Good Sir. It's my suspicion that the stickles aren't the thing about an imitation as much as the general shape and color combos. Bet I could use this fathead instruction as the way to do it.

@PhilRowleyFlyFishing
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing 3 года назад
@@julianmartin5004 I can't exactly remember how long ago balanced flies and specifically streamers were created. Jerry McBride from Spokane introduced me to the balanced fly concept at least 10 years ago. The Fathead Minnow variation in this video is one I came up with. I am guessing I came up with this particular pattern 4-5 years ago. Cheers, Phil
